G.I. JOE 3 Producer Says Film Should Begin Shooting In Early 2015

Lorenzo di Bonaventura says the creative talent for G.I. Joe 3 is close to being finalized. "We’re just starting [to talk to directors]. We’re negotiating with a writer right now, and once we close that deal—which should be any moment—then we’ll have a story locked down."

Roadblock and Snake Eyes in GI Joe 3

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, executive producer of both the G.I. Joe film series and the Transformers franchise, recently spoke about the former while promoting the upcoming release of the latter's quasi-reboot. On the Joe front, it seems di Bonaventura is willing to acknowledge that neither G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra or G.I.Joe: Retaliation, really gave fans the G.I. Joe movie they wanted to see. "The hardest thing in film, I think, is to reduce something to something simple.  You want it to be smart, you want it to have all this complexity, you want to do all these things which sometimes makes it all so confusing.  How do you boil something down until you have sort of an essential construct that the audience can connect to, understand, and then we’re allowed to go crazy with it," theorized the Hollywood producer, while talking to Collider.  He continued, "This time we have a very clear, very defined, tight idea that I wish I had on every sequel I’ve ever worked on.  Simple's the hardest to get to."

The conversation continued a bit more on G.I. Joe, with di Bonaventure confirming that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson would be returning for the third entry, however, who else would be accompanying him, is something that's still up in the air.  However, he did give a strong hint that the Joes that are fan favorites will definitely be included in the third installment, so expect to see more of Snake Eyes (Ray Park) as well.  Talk then turned to the fact that the project doesn't currently have a director of screenwriter attached. This is a somewhat worrying fact, considering cameras are currently planned to start rolling in approximately 6-7 months.  Given the uninspired story that unfolded in the first two films, it's probably a good idea to give whoever is going to tackle the plot as much time as possible to crack the code.  However, di Bonaventure did state that negotiations are currently under way with an unnamed screenwriter and are close to being finalized.  "We’re just starting [to talk to directors].  We’re negotiating with a writer right now, and once we close that deal—which should be any moment—then we’ll have a story locked down.  I’m really excited about it."

What and who do you want to see in the next G.I. Joe film? It seems that Roadblock and Snake Eyes are a given but who else should return- Flint, Lady Jaye, Mouse, or maybe even a resurrection for Channing Tatum's Duke?

Make the primary story about Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow..others Joes/Cobra can be secondary.
Everyone knows Snake Eyes is the best thing about it all.

Channing Tatum was the highlight of those terrible films and they killed him off in the second one. So just bring him back and get someone to write a better script along with some different cast members. Some that aren't cardboard on-screen or are reduced to cardboard because they're in the wrong role.

It would be great to see someone take two properties and combine them in a movie. It's been tried a few times, but something more ambitious. I like the idea of GI Joe and Transformers, but I don't really like the transformers. I'd love to see GI JOE and Predator, for example. That'd be pretty cool. Or with Aliens. Something different. We can't just keep recycling the same. Comics do a good job with crossovers every so often. Maybe movies should try more. The best Predator story I ever read was Predator v Batman. I'd love to see something like that on the big screen. The first Predator was against the military anyway. Maybe Predator v. GI Joe would be the bomb.

I quite liked the second one, especially the homage to Silent Interlude. Yes I'd like to see the movies a bit more serious, (the comment about Cap2 was good) but I don't think we'll get that, maybe they'll surprise us. I'd like to see a lot more of Cobra Commander. Always been my favourite character and they don't use him enough in the movies. Should just kind of retcon it. CC was cool in number 2 though and he looked cool. Don't like that they had to make him deformed to explain why he wears a mask. I mean, he's a criminal. That's reason enough, so he can walk the streets normally without being recognised.

Man, I feel that if you look up the definition of 'Cluster-[frick]' on google, G.I. Joe 2 should be the first answer. That film was literally my hell. From the dialogue to the acting, it was painful. And the sad thing is...

I'll never get those 2 hours of my life back....

This franchise isn't dead yet. I'm now at the point where I don't believe a successful GI Joe film can be made.

The second one felt all over the place and choppy

Plus with the fact they completely changed the cast from the first one you don't have any connection with the characters

It honestly should had been rebooted and properly done

I actually gave up on this franchise. Did'nt like the first, thought the second would be great but it just turned out to be a snooze. These films want to be epic and fun but just end up being a bore with silly substances sandwiched into the film.

I just watched retaliation last night. Seemed like a decent live action cartoon to me.

Cheesy villian, jacked heroes, ninjas talking about honor and shit. This is the stuff I loved when I was a kid.

The Rock was a good lead. His interactions with Tatum were pretty awkward though.

get RZA outta there. He looked silly as shit in that Shaolin Monk's Bathrobe and that Fred G. Sandford hairpiece.

That's my only request.

The second film was great for just the reason they killed off Tatum.
He's a terrible actor & will never be believed as an action hero.

The Snake Eyes / Storm Shadow conflict / friendship is the only real compelling part of all GI JOE stories.
These movies have been sub-par EXCEPT when Snake Eyes has a cool action scene.

They are much better than Transformers films...screw box office...means nothing.
Must improve the franchise or why continue?

People who go and see this movie should have their pictures posted online and in local newspapers and publicly shamed. GI Joe Retaliation was one of the worst movies I've every seen. After Earth felt like an Academy Award winner compared to that garbage.

Ok let them take a shot at a 3rd film then done! Give it five years then reboot the hell out of it! We need decent actors for the characters we Joe fans love. Stick to the material hollywood and stop ruining our childhood! I want to see Zartan with his hood and for the love of god get rid of that stupid outfit for Storm Shadow!

Some good action in retaliation. Lol, even the GI Joe franchise knows Channing Tatum sucks as an actor, smart move. Since changing the race of a character is the new fad, Byung-Hun Lee for Iron Fist. Yeah I said it. We talk about wanting other races to join the super hero genre. Why not make Iron Fist from Asian descent, a kung master that is not a white guy. I know most people are going to think I am stupid, but if any character could use a race change it's Iron Fist. For me, danny rand is not about his race but about his beliefs, dedication, and what he stands for. Iron Fist is a moniker so they could just a character that came before rand, have rand be the future Iron Fist. And with that I am prepared for the debate. I am Groot.

Boiling a plot down to a basic single sentence summary really ought to be the first step in writing a script. Similar o a log line, and it's something you ought to refer to after each draft, or if you get lost as you're writing. That way you ensure you stay on point.

You take that sentence and expand it to a sentence description for each act, ensuring each leads to the next. Then break those down into 12 sequences, each as a sentence.

It's all about getting your concepts down to the most basic version, and expanding, expanding, expanding.

@Grimfoe The reason everyone talks about G.I. Joe vs. Transformers is because they're both Hasbro properties and both licensed to Paramount. A cross-over would be easy to accomplish. Anything else would take a lot of legal wrangling—even with other Paramount properties like Star Trek.

Duke dying in the beginning of the second movie ended the travesty for me. I did like how Cobra Commander came off. Big miss.
