The Rise of Cobra: Is it really that bad?

While I'm no die hard Joe fan, I do know enough though. So, is "The Rise of Cobra" as bad as some people think?

Editorial Opinion

I write this in preperation of the upcoming sequel, G.I Joe: Retaliation. This is by no means a review. But, I merely examine the film and give my opinion on if this is truly as bad as a lot of people claim. First, there is one complaint I wanna shoot down right off the back.

Channing Tatum as Duke

This is one complaint I see over and over and over. Channing Tatum is not a bad actor by any means. Actuallywh, he's a very good actor. Films like Magic Mike, The Vow, Dear John and 21 Jump Street that whether it's a good movie or not (personally, I really enjoyed all of those movies) that he can actually act and is a big reason it's worth watching. While, as I stated in the teaser. I'm no die hard G.I Joe fan by any means but I do respect the source material and I knew that Duke and the Baroness where never together and that she was never the sister of Cobra Commander. They did that to simply add drama and for me as a general audience member, it worked. Channing Tatum to me is Duke, for the basics needed to play Duke. He had the requirements and it payed off. If they do truly kill him off in the first act in G.I Joe: Retalation, I won't be a happy camper. Cause every fan wants to see Cobra Commander and Duke go toe to toe. Channing Tatum a bad thing in G.I Joe? Hell no.

Accelerator Suits

This is another complaint I see frequently. To be honest with you, I thought this was pretty cool. I'm not sure if this was actually in the mythology and the lore of the comics for G.I Joe but again, it worked for the movie. If anything, you can't say the chase through Paris wasn't cool and that the banter between Marlon Wayans and Channing Tatum didn't help make it even more enjoyable. The accelerator suits helped make the action that much more fun to watch, plain and simple.

Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow

This is one thing no one can deny that they got right. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are as famous of enemies as Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Everyone knew if there was one thing that they absolutely HAD to get right was, the bitter rivlary between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Okay, so the costume in Retalition is a million times better than it was in The Rise of Cobra, as far as Snake Eyes goes. But, you really going to let the costume ruin the movie version of the character for you? I think not.

Visual Effects and Cobra Commander

A lot of people didn't like the visual effects and thought it was too cartoony. I never got that vibe, especially when no one complained about giant alien robots at war on earth being too cartoony. Also, the look of Cobra Commander did bug me at first. But after awhile, it looked alright. But, that's another thing Retaliation improved upon. They nailed the look of Cobra Commander. But again, shouldn't ruin the experience for you.

Rest of the cast

I thought the entire cast did a great job. Even had a cameo from Brendan Fraser was a cool thing to see. I am gonna miss seeing Denis Quaid in G.I Joe cause he was probably one of my favorite things about the first film. You can't simply go from Denis Quaid to Bruce Willis. Sure, Bruce Willis is a great actor and action star. But, you can't just simply replace Denis Quaid. Denis Quaid has the commanding presence that Bruce Willis simply just doesn't have.

Final thoughts: To be honest, The Rise of Cobra really isn't that bad of a movie. Sure it does have flaws but I listed the positives that should over power the flaws. If you have a problem with the movie then, it's not my place to try and change your mind. Quit frankly, I'm a little bit iffy on Retaliation. I think they should have done a straight up sequel cause it being a partial reboot (most of the cast isn't returning) just ruins it for me cause I really liked and really enjoyed The Rise of Cobra. I do want to see Retaliation and I looks like it'll be a fun action movie like the first one was but the trailers doesn't have that sort of "pop" that sells it to me like the first one did. I feel The Rise of Cobra had a more fun feel to it. What happened? Ah well. Sound off below with your comments and thoughts on both The Rise of Cobra and whether Retaliation is on your list of films to see this year.

@thenerdicon: Um, hipster? Really? I'm not trying to be anything. Yes, I think Tatum is a good actor. I don't see why people hate him. As I said before, I never really knew G.I Joes until I was like 10. Never got into em. Yes, I think The Rise of Cobra is a good movie. Never said great, excellent, ect. Just good. Plus, it's a bit unfair to say that I'm not a fan of movies if I like this one. My all time favorite movies: Jurassic Park, Lincoln, Gladiator, Zodiac and Warrior. Those are excellent films and my all time favorites. I really would like for you to try and tell me that I'm not a fan of movies again.

@thenerdicon: I really don't see how all of his performances are wooden, flat and completely devoid of all of emotion. Go back and watch The Vow and Dear John if you wanna try that statement. Just saying.

This was one of the biggest piles of crap anyone has ever shat out onto a piece of film.

1. I actually dont mind Tatum, and Duke was never a favorite character of mine, so that didnt bother me.

2. They nailed Cobra Commander's look? No. Cobra Commander has never looked anything even remotely close to that. Retaliation has nailed his look. This movie ruined it. Also, Dr Mindbender is not Cobra Commander. Not in any incarnation. They were always two separate characrers. Cobra Commander was ruined in every possible way in this movie.

3. Snake Eyes' costume in this was perfect and was in no way ruined....except maybe the fake lips they put on the mask.

4. Snake Eyes vs. Stormshadow. While they got the rivalry right, the fight between them was terrible. They build up to the two of them fighting, then when it happens, it shows them fight for what felt like 10 seconds, switched scenes to show other uninteresting action, then switched to show snake eyes kill Storm Shadow. Biggest waste of high quality martial artists that i've ever seen.

All in all, the story was horrible, special effects were horrible, acting was laughable.....oh, and ice doesn't sink.

Im excited for Retaliation though. Everything about it looks much better.

@CorndogBurglar: I should have been a little bit more specific on a couple things. Cobra Commanders look in Retaliation is what I meant by they nailed it. Snake Eyes' costume was good but the lips on the mask and the fact that for me, it did look more rubbery than an actual costume. I also, didn't mind the fights between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Same with the films story. The only one I really agree with you on (other than Cobra Commanders costume) is the fact that ice doesn't sink.

@corndog, dr mindbender and cobra commander were not the same person, dr mindbender was in the movie, he was the guy who showed Rex about the nanomites in the shelter when Rex was supposedly killed.

@LEVI: I didn't go see it. I watched it on the internet and before you ask lol no, it wasn't for the strippers. I watched it cause it actually looked good despite being the type of movie I wouldn't see and it turned out surprisingly good.

I like the movie, I think it's a fun popcorn summer movie. Not ment to be taken seriously, which for some reason a lot of you do. Gi joe was my childhood, the cartoon, not so much the comics. Had all the figures, vehicles, etc. The movie has its problems, spotty cgi, breakers a little annoying, but it's also got some great looking cgi in spots, snake eyes and storm shadow were great, and their fight wasn't short at all, zartan, desto, and the Eiffel tower scene were fantastic too.

@ levitikuz and Lizard

Its kind of funny because Magic Mike is based on a true story of a period during Tatum's life. He really used to be a male stripper and the characters in the movie are actually based on people he knew and worked with. He lived in Tampa Florida during all of that, and thats also where i have lived my whole life.

However, even knowing all that, you couldnt pay me enough to watch that movie.

I only know about this stuff because Tatum did a radio interview about it when the movie was coming out....at least thats the story im sticking to. I really dont enjoy movies about male strippers, i swear. Why are you looking at me like that? Lol :)

@CorndogBurglar: I knew it was based on a true story bout Tatum's life at one point too. It's still a good movie. I wouldn't highly recommend it but I think it deserves a look.

Is Tatum the best actor in the world? hell no. but he's good. this was him and everyone having fun, While I will rarely agree with Lizzy over here, Nick you made a LOT of good points that I agree with you ever single one. I actually liked the whole "Darth Cobra" and thought Joesph Gordon-Levitt did an amazing job. [insets Incredible Hulk theory and laughs at everyone who says "its not not the comic or show"] wasn't Magic Mike a remake of boogie nights? cause thats the vibe I Got with a bit of the full Monty.

@Levi: Yea, this is a [frick]ed up conversation. I'm a straight guy but there is nothing wrong with a guy being straight and like Magic Mike. I mean shit, it's not like I watched it for the strippers. The story was good, which was part of the appeal for me and the fact that Channing Tatum was in it. I like Channing Tatum's movies so that's what I mean by the fact that Channing Tatum is in it.

The movie is not that bad, it got enough buzz for a sequel, the main problem is that joes are en elite military team that means they use real weapons, real planes, real tanks. I guess the real problem with the movie was the fantasy and comedic tone and even with that I enjoyed a lot.

@SotoJuiceMan: Right. I mean christ, It really shouldn't be a bother to look at one considering that all (last time I checked) guys have one. So, what is the big deal?

I'm recalling the Paris scene, where they are racing through the streets (and the buildings framing them) in their accelerator suits, trying desperately to stop the Eiffel Tower from getting hit with a nanotech payload.

I really didn't get that, at all. Of course it's a famous landmark, but with all the destruction they cause in the streets, I'm at a loss to understand how the ends justify the means here. On top of it all, the Eiffel Tower gets hit anyway.

I downloaded it years ago. It was that much of a guilty pleasure. Not having ever seen the cartoon, and not having read the comics, this was simply an action movie to me. I liked Storm Shadow well enough, Snake Eyes was pretty awesome, Scarlet was cool, but the rest just didn't matter to me.

All I see is chest pounding.

From someone who had the 12" GI Joe in the late 70's, was the first kid to buy the small Joes with my allowance money, watched the cartoon and read the Marvel comics (which I still have); the first movie was not GI Joe. Sommers basically admitted to trying to make an old school James Bond movie using characters with Joe monikers. He missed the entire point of GI Joe: Bad a$$ AMERICAN soldiers, each in individualistic uniforms that represented their personality. I will continue to pretend the first movie didn't happen. I could have made a better movie in my sleep. The new movie actually looks like Joe (except Lady J should have short hair and Flint should have a beret and shotgun).

While I'm venting; GI Joe is more about Snake Eyes than Duke. Snake Eyes was one of the original set. Duke didn't come out til much later, and you had to order him by mail (which I did). And the Marvel comic book run is far superior to the cartoon (even though I watched the cartoon religiously). The first movie should have focused on the original small team and expanded from there. Should have began with Snake Eyes, Stalker and Storm Shadow as army regulars and went from there. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go back and read the Marvel comic run. It has an amazing storyline that could have been condensed and adapted into a great movie or trilogy. But no, we had to get a cheap James Bond knock-off.

I'm done, I feel a little better now. We'll see how I feel after Retaliation.

@thenerdicon: Just at least give, The Vow, a shot. Yes, it's romance. It's as predictable as an action movie and as a horror movie. You'd know that Channing Tatum has range if you watch them with an open mind. Whether you like romance movies or not.

Ok, I'm a fan of GI Joe since I was 5, and that was awhile ago, so IMO Rise of Cobra was a crap rendition of the lore. Zartan and was the best thing in it. I understand changing things but, they changed way to much. It was horrible. The hyper suits, Ripcord, slutty Barroness, I could go on and on and on. I thank god for Jon Chu getting a hold of this franchise, cause he seems like he'll redeem it for me!

As far as Channing and his acting, he's a decent actor. The Vow really surprised me, and to be honest, I almost, ALMOST, teared up. Mostly due to the wife balling her eyes out almost, ALMOST, got me started. Dear John and 21jump street, I didn't really care for. I've never watched Majic Mike but, there's nothin wrong with watching it. Maybe someday I will but, as of right now it doesn't interest me. I think he'll be around for a while.
