As the cast for CW's modern take on DC comics character Green Arrow grows, the latest addition is stage actor Colin Donnell.

From Deadline..

Donnell will play Tommy Merlyn, Oliver’s best friend, a playboy “trustafarian” who assumes the good times will roll again now that Oliver has returned…only to learn Oliver is a changed man.

Now as any Green Arrow fan will know, the character of "Merlyn The Magician" in the comics is also an expert archer and one of Queen's arch villains. The two did start off as friends, but it was short lived. One would assume that is the road the tv pilot will take with this Tommy Merlyn, but I guess you never know since this won't follow the comics in any specific way. Steven Amell will play Oliver Queen under Smallville director David Nutter. The pilot was written/executive produced by Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim.

They should of kept the old origin. I've never been a big fan of "the best friend from the past" backstory.

@ironman53, well, The CW isn't an entity, it's a network that's run by a person. And the person who was in charge of the network since it's inception no longer works there. Now that someone new is running the network, someone who wasn't formerly the vice president of Lifetime and isn't dedicated to shows like Gossip Girl and 90210, we will start to see a change in the network.

Does that mean the show will be good?No it doesn't.But the fact that it's on The CW, which is under new leadership, certainly doesn't automatically mean it's going to be bad. That's up to the producers, writers and actors.

I honestly think this show has a good shot at going to series.Look at how quickly The CW is moving on this show. It's only been a month since the pilot was greenlit and they've already cast all the main characters, found a director and picked a location and filming date.No other CW pilot is anywhere near that stage.Hell, out of the 8 that were picked, only two others have actors attached and 1 has a director. That's it.

Seems like Mark Pedowitz(CW president) has some faith in this project and has fast-tracked it.Generally The CW is the last network to pick their pilots, cast and shoot them, but this year they were actually the first to pick their pilots.

Not only has Arrow progressed faster than any other CW series, it's further along than any pilot on network TV.No other show already has a full cast, a director and a shooting schedule.

That's pretty interesting.

Whatever happened to Marve's five possible upcoming live-action tv shows? They were announced back in November. I like live-action tv more than animated tv as do most. Marvel hasn't put out a live-action tv show since 2006. Does anybody know why that is?

They hired a stage actor? That's interesting.

I will say, he does look like Merlyn a little bit.

Does anyone else smell Smallville copycat with the news coming out on this. New clue: Clark/Lex Ollie/Merlyn. Start as friends after a couple seasons they will hate each other and let the arrows fly.

I have NO faith in this adaptation.

FACT: The show's head writers are the ones responsible for the trainwreck that was Green Lantern.

Remember when David Goyer had that idea for a Green Arrow film, Escape From Supermax? That idea sounds a hell of a lot better than this show. Why can't we have that?

The speed at which this is moving tells me they regret no longer having Smallville around to support their lineup. Nikita does nothing to help Supernatural and Secret Circle isn't bringing in the Smallville numbers even with a better broadcast night. The CW needs something to keep them afloat and they stupidly didn't have any other thing in the Superhero genre in the development pipeline.

How the crap do you ruin Green Arrow's mythology? HOW?!!!!
YOU CAN'T EVEN GET MERLYN RIGHT??!!!

WTF?!
Sheesh, what is the point in making a tv show that has a character, based on a comic book, that will have no connection to the comic? Thats so stupid. They should have left it alone in the first place!!
