FIREFLY/SERENITY Actor Sean Maher Joins ARROW As 'Shrapnel'

The actor who played Doctor Simon Tam in Joss Whedon's Firefly and its big screen outing Serenity will guest star in the 10th episode of the CW's second season of Arrow, playing DC comics villain Mark Scheffer, aka Shrapnel.

Serenity's Summer Glau is already on board Arrow season 2, and now THR report that her screen brother Sean Maher has also signed on as the evil Mark Scheffer, better known as DC supervillain Shrapnel. In the comics Shrapnel is made of metal and has superhuman strength and stamina, but it's unlikely that this will carry over to the show -- although he does share some of the same traits as his comic counterpart, as THR reckon he'll be a "serial bomber who places Starling City in a grip of terror and threatens the life of Sebastian Blood (Kevin Alejandro)". Maher will guest star in the tenth episode of the CW show.

It's going to be interesting to see how they re-imagine this character.

I expect they will completely botch up the character of Shrapnel - like they utterly botched Firefly by turning him into a firefighter with a grudge (who went out like a emo-self-redeeming-punk).

I'll give Season 2 a shot but they are on thin ice with portraying villains like that. Kinda restrictive this whole Nolan-esque realism isnt it! (in retrospect).

Oh good, Arrow didn't have enough handsome young actors... I always thought Sean Maher might make a good Superman, although he's a bit too soft spoken.

My only gripe with the show is why introduce characters from the comics like this that will inevitably in no way resemble the character they're based on?

Was actually a really good villain in Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing, so hopefully he does well here.

Meh. Am I the only one getting a bit put off with Oliver's no killing policy now? They did it perfect in the first season. Why change it?

Plus how did he catch that girl that he had been fighting for most of season 1 with such ease? I mean not killing makes him more dangerous? WITW?

I wonder if somehow he'll be near an explosion at some point and get hit with shrapnel, giving him a somewhat comic book appearance.

@ SimyJo

I actually agree with you on Firefly, they screwed up that character. Though the only downfall of Arrow is going the Nolan direction on no powers. The good thing is they are going to change that this season and I do not mean just with the Flash. Hopefully soon we will see other characters with some sort of powers.

At least it's another chararcter that's recognizable and not some no name watered carbon copy of a character.
