Recently, a still of The Huntress (played Jessica De Gouw) from The CW's Arrow was leaked online, giving us our first look at the television series' depiction of the DC character. Now, Entertainment Weekly have officially released the still:

Additionally, the site spoke with executive producer Andrew Kreisberg about Huntress' introduction in the series, as well as her costume, religion, and whether or not we can expect her to appear again on Arrow after her first appearance in episode six.

Tell me what made you want to introduce the Huntress — and so early in the show’s run, for that matter.
"Geoff Johns [from DC Entertainment] was up on the set when we were shooting the pilot and while we were sitting in Vancouver outside freezing our butts off [while] shooting the island sequences, we sat around going, ‘Well, we don’t want to jinx ourselves, but let’s say we do get picked up: What kind of DC characters do you think we can bring to the show?’ And we started spit-balling, I’m not sure which one of us it was but somehow we got this idea for the Huntress. She is the dark mirror version of Oliver, and it was a nice contrast to him because he’s pretty extreme. He goes a lot further than not only his comic book version but lots of comic book characters — most have a code of draws the line against killing. Our [Oliver] is obviously past that. [So we wondered] what could we do if we brought the Huntress in. Since we already have a character who goes to extremes, how much more extreme can we make her?

"What we really liked was that on an emotional level, she and Oliver are both damaged by their pasts. As we say on the show, they’ve both gone through a crucible and come out the other side. This is the way they’re coping, but somehow, Oliver has taken the darkness inside with him and is doing something positive with it. She’s taken the darkness inside her and is seeking revenge and doesn’t care who gets hurt in the process. All of these interesting philosophical discussions: What is vengeance? What is justice? Where do you draw the line and how far is too far? And then the fact that she’s hot and Oliver is into her makes it all the more complicated.

What ended up being the answer to your first question — how did you make her more extreme than Oliver?
"When you watch the episode, someone close to Oliver is almost killed by the Huntress’ actions and that sets him on his quest. So it’s kind of interesting because in some ways he’s seeking revenge and then he collides with somebody else who’s entire reason for being is revenge. And what’s interesting is that Oliver is on autopilot in some respects as far as his mission. Everything is about the mission and righting his father’s wrongs. And it’s only until he bumps into this sad, damaged, angry but beautiful woman that he realizes how lonely he is and the toll that lying to everybody in his life is taking. So he’s going after a bad guy and he suddenly realizes that he has a lot more in common with her than just about anyone else in his family. That creates this amazing fun relationship for them."

Will we see more of her after her initial appearances?
"We hope so. It’s two episodes for now but we definitely hope we see more of her. We certainly set her up as an interesting foil for Oliver and we’re excited to see where else we can take her."

Let’s talk about her costume.
"For the Huntress — she’s basically wearing a cape and a purple bikini in the comic. That wouldn’t play so well. So her costume is much more functional while also being sexy and you see there are also hints of purple, which ties into her comic book costume. We also think that on our show, no one is wearing a costume — they are uniforms or outfits. Also, in the comic, Helena is devoutly Catholic. You can see in the Kevlar she’s wearing on her chest, it’s actually in the shape of a cross, which we thought was really cool."

Will her Catholicism play a big part of your TV version of the character?
"Her religion has really become revenge. She wears a cross around her neck and that plays a key role in the episode. We don’t touch too much upon the religion, but the iconography is certainly there from the comic books. You can see the DNA of the comic book version in the outfit that our Helena wears. It was just really fun to see because since the pilot, it’s really our first out-and-out hero outfit that we’ve designed, and we really think we’ve succeeded."

Arrow airs Wednesdays on The CW at 8 PM EST.

"no one is wearing a costume — they are uniforms or outfits." Kinda like Smallville...rite. Who wore a cape in that show, Doctor Fate and then Clark at the end of the series? Everything else was a uniform or outfit.

@toco89 nothing ballsy about religion, dude. It's just religion. Do you even know how to use the word "ballsy"?

I realize of course that it's all ludicrous and we can't really expect actual realism out of it, but if they're so interested in the appearance of realism that they change her costume into Oliver's with a purple cross, then why on earth is her hair still just hanging loose like that?

I wondered about that in TDKR as well: here we have these guys so set and determined on making everything "plausible in the real world" but highly trained hand-to-hand fighters wear long hair loose? Just seems...odd. I was always told that long, loose hair is basically the biggest liability you can have in a fight. Half the world will go straight for the hair-yank at the outset, the other half stands a good chance of getting a handful of it even if they miss another hold, and there's basically nothing to do but try to work through the pain if someone gets hold of the end of it. Blah...yeah, rant over.

Lame. They could've made it a lot more like the comic with a tiny bit of effort and pulled it off.

I think the costume is perfect and exactly how it should translate to TV. There's subtle hints to the comic version and we still haven't seen it in motion. I'm sure it will look great then. They even kept the crossbow. You people need to quit being so skeptical and just take everything into account.

and they're not even trying to hide the fact that they're ripping off nolan...

Like many have said too many side characters being introduced.

1. The characters are one-shots they are just put there to draw in fans.

2. The writing and dialogue on this show is pretty bad.

@dekexz19

"You people need to quit being so skeptical"

we don't need to quit being anything. this show has failed to impress, and outside of the crap first episode (which i only viewed to be fair to the show), it hasn't given me one good reason to tune in.

again, complete generic crap. no wonder the ratings are declining.
ep1 = 4.14 million
ep2 = 3.55 million
ep3 = 3.51 million
ep4 = 3.05 million
it's lost about 25% of it's viewers since day one.
throughout most of it's run, smallville scored 4-6million easily. it got cancelled when it hit 2-3million, which is where this is heading less than 5 episodes in. i predict this'll be cancelled soon.

Why create a show based on comic book characters & cop out on the costumes?!
Ollies look translates pretty well as dies Deathstroke look from the pics i saw.

Need to see more of Huntress to really tell but it looks fairly generic.
Show is just good..it could be great of they try harder.

@jingorot: A problem people may have with the show is that Oliver Queen isn't nearly as high profile as Clark Kent. And I support the idea that Smallville ended, it wasn't canceled. The show was no longer about Smallvile, Kent was officially part of Metropolis.

The purple is darker in the official image, which makes it look better.

I still think they could've done so much more with her costume. Hopefully when she comes back, Helena will have updated her costume off screen or something.

That's a nice touch that they will be alluding to her religious beliefs from the comics more or less. Jessica De Gouw is beautiful and does look like Helena. I just wish her outfit was better.

@ArtisticErotic I really hope we see that costume eventually! Her abdomen would have to be covered up for protection. And the suit would look better as a plus.

Someone's been taking cues from Ridley Scott on how to not follow something while appearing to follow it.

Huntress has one of the most ridiculous costumes. Like a mash-up of Wolverine, every Psylocke outfit, with a pointless square cut navel exposure.

On with the show. Ollie kills people in every episode. As Diggle said: he is a murderer. Doesn't matter who he is killing, it is still murder. He does NOT kill people in the comics.

Making Huntress a killer doesn't seem like they're setting up a stark contrast between the two...
