Common is not John Stewart

Common is not John Stewart

It seems that John Stewart may not even play in the new Justice League movie.

HipHopDX reported that Common will not play the role of The Green Lantern in the upcoming Justice League of America film.

It seems that Warner Brothers has chosen to develop the script around Hal Jordan instead of John Stewart, the African American Green Lantern. Currently, actor Chris Pine, who stars in the upcoming Star Trek movie, is in the running for the role of the original Green Lantern (Alan Scott is not counted as these Lantens).

The site also reported that the Justice League movie directed by Martin Campbell, is expected to be released December 17, 2010. I'm not sure as to the validity of the date.

I would like to see John Stewart in a movie, he is my favorite human Lantern. But it makes since for them to start with Hal, since John is his backup/ partner.

As much as I'd love to see Common play John Stewart, or Stewart in a Justice League movie at all, I'm much more interested in just seeing a good movie. I'll give Warner Brothers the benefit of the doubt (for now). Please don't let them screw this up.

SupahPhreak @ Ffs, its a good move not having STEWART in JUSTICE LEAGUE!!! We gotta have the key members! Why can't STEWART just have a cameo in GREEN LANTERN and then, i think which would be cool, STEWART to actually be the star of GREEN LANTERN 2! ; ) Also have KYLE as the star of GREEN LANTERN 3! Spin HAL in a CORPS movie and put GUY in a live tv spin off series! Oh yeah can always do a prequel to GREEN LANTERN with ALAN SCOTT too!!!! Yep, i know it'll never happen lol, though WARNERS should think along these lines, will keep it fresh an us lot happy lol! : D

I want to see John he is my favorite Lantern, but Common does not seem to have the bearing to play Stewart, if that makes sense. John Stewart was a Marine, a soldier, Common just don't exume militaristic qualities. I know its trivial, but his posture is as bad as his acting.

DC has to start with Hal because that is were the mythos started. From there we will probably have to deal with Guy Gardner, I just hate that character worse than Jason Todd was hated by the masses. I hope they introduce John before Guy, even though Guy came first.

I would love an Alan Scott movie. I hope that they will do a series of GL movies each focusing on a different Lantern, Hal, Guy, John, Kyle, and end the series with Parallax.

I like John he has had one of the most interesting histories of the Lanterns.

They need to have Hal in Justice League first, because he was in the original line up. The only reason they talk about putting John in is because he was in the TV series. That is not a good reason.

dellamorte1872 @ :thumbs !!! THEHAWK good post!!! Hey what ya mean you hate GUY lol!!! I love that GUY heh heh!!! Him and LOBO kept me reading JUSTICE LEAGUE and L.E.G.I.O.N all them years ago lol! But yeah i hope JOHN is in it before GUY as ive always seen JOHN as the second or third GREEN LANTERN, if you count ALAN SCOTT of course and then GUY!

I think you go with Hal because he seems to be the most popular and known (fans of old and new = more viewers = more money). But, if the movies go over, you work John in later. I wish they would look to future movieS and not just the typical 3 movie deal. I like John too. I could see Hal is his own movie and John in the JL as someone said.

As a "black" American, I don't think any intelligent person would claim DC is Racist. Just like I don't think any intelligent person would bring up how they don't like the POUTS when discussing common being drop as a possible GL. What does that have to do with anything, so far the only ones complaining about race seems to be people angry at black people. Seriously stop race baiting.

That being said, if a "black" Americans complained about DC being racist, they be just as ignorant. Because you see it's business. And plus, the DC universes are some of the most diverse in literature.

DC is negotiating with Mr. Pine for the part because he will be in one of the biggest movies of the summer. Makes sense to grab a hot commodity for a major movie.
As far as GL being in a JLA movie, DC wants an XMen type movie but might follow in a the marvel model of independent films for it's hero's to be merge into super group. So it would make sense if the are doing a Hal Jordan GL that, that a Hal Jordan GL be available for a JLA movie in the near future.

let's try and use our heads when having a worthwhile discussion about an art we all love.

@ dellamorte.
John has headlined several GL books. He took over for a few years, until Sinestro f'd up his ring and Katma died. Over the years he has had some cool roles. He was the fist human to become a Guardian of the Universe. After Paralax he was chosen to command the Darkstars. And as for him not being in the JLA until the cartoon. Check your facts he was in the League in the 90's so you can't say it was a recent thing.

Exactly! Parallax! Only after a serial of story-arching films of adventures with Hal should we have Stewart pick up the mantle (and the pieces for that matter) of Jordan's "change". I certainly wouldn't introduce him until maybe the second JLA movie and maybe the third or fourth GL movie. He has a role, but like Doomsday and Superman, he should be reserved for a/the grand climax. You know, after all the smaller adventures with Hal...
Dessert only after the main course. Stewart was designed to fill the gap left by Hal/Parallax. Thats just the bottom line. There isn't any room for arguement here. My opinion is right, the dissenters are wrong.

Ok, onto dream-casting for Stewart! How about Michael Jai White?

Denzel Washington would be an awesome Green Lantern. Denzel as John Stewart. That be a first for Denzel Washington, and his one deminsional acting. Hes always a cop, or a thug, or a secret agent, or some government position. Man on fire, out of time, de ja vu, etc they were all the same...he played himself in every movie except for training day..which is fine for him being nominated for his acting. Because he not like that in real life.

Now to see Denzel as John stewart....That be awesome....Denzel already has experience being a Cop, and agent in his movie. Now he can upgrade and be the galactic cop of the universe lol.

Btw, that should also up sell the movie, since denzel's in it right? lol

GL Movie: Common as GL he just doesnt strike me as the hero type. To me making him GL would be as bad as making Nick Cage Superman.I dont think John Stewart is a bad\not great GL and I think if written right he could support or carry his own in a movie. Actually Hal&John have a few similaries, one they both have a military background ,John destroyed a planet and Hal destroyed Coast City, these two events changed the kind of GL that they would become.Hal-Parrallax and John-this second guessing I dont want to lead anymore B-teamer.As for who should be in the JLA movie if SUPERMAN,BATMAN,WONDER WOMAN,AND FLASH ARE IN IT THEN YOU HAVE TO USE HAL JORDAN.The only way to introduce another GL from space sector 2814 would be in the 2nd or 3rd movie.

Airwolf: 1. I say no to Denzel. 2. I don't agree on your assessment of his performances. Malcom X was good, and so was Glory. THough glory falls into the whole cop/agent/government category. The point was that he was not one dimesional in those films. It seems many peope put him in there (and at the expense of sounding like a racist, which I care not) because he seems like the best black guy out there. I don't think that's true. Not only that, he's getting too old. 10-15 years ago I would have wanted Lawrence Fishburne. Now, I'm not certain. Courtney B. Vance? I think I'm leaning to a Stewart thats a little older than others. Picking up the mentor role.

Airwolf: let me add to what Phinehals has already stated Denzel is a well rounded actor Malcolm X,A Preachers Wife,Mo Better Blues,John Q and the list goes on. Denzel is too old now for any superhero role unless he's playing the retired father. For Steward if that ever happens lets try Tryess,Micheal Jai White,or me LOL. Anyway again like with alot of these comicbook characters there's got to be people looking for a break that would love these roles.People who can actually act and look the part we dont always need big name stars to bring these characters to life.

Hmmm...well Youre right on Malcomn X. Thats actually one of my favorites. But, that movie has the flaws, as in controversial stuff that they couldnt put in the movie. But thats another conversation.

Denzel would be a perfect John Stewart. Will Smith can also play the part well, but then again I want to see will smith in something BETTER. Maybe, because I find Will smith being a better ACTOR then denzel washington...Hes can be a thug, a rapper, a sophisticated black man, a business associate, a father, a cop, a secret agent, a superhero, a scientist, a pilot... anything really.....WILL SMITH is the best Black actor alive right now...next to forest whittaker. I dont like Denzel...I used to until he started playing the same character roles over and over and over. Hes not a bad actor, hes quite good, but he is VERY OVER-RATED. VERY.
Aiiwolf
Aiiwolf - 4/4/2009, 6:13 PM
No im sticking with what I feel would be best for a GL movie, since I am keeping up with the Green lantern corps, and current new series. John is old. Denzel is old. They go well together. Terrance Howard is a good choice too.

@ Blade
I disagree....Denzel is not well rounded...hes one dimensional...lets see him star ina comedy, or a horror, or evil villian master mind? He only chooses roles that fit him, just like keanu reeves...hes no where near marlon brando, johnny depp, or al pacino... he plays the same [frick]ing roles over and over. And its over-kill now...he stars in any other roels beside the ones he already done over and over...i will never see him as WELL ROUNDED. lol He and keanu are in the same ball park :) Nothing agaisnt denzel, just sick of seeing the same shit over and over.

Micheal Jai White is like 42 how is that young? lmfao.
Tyrese Sucks....he should stick with modeling....
2F2f: "You seeee....WE hungaryyyy?" ...you know when actor built images like that...thats the only thing they are going to get, their not taken serious....
....and for "you"...if you want the part....go to california and try to be member of SAG.

My friends say their pretty damn picky on who they accept :) good luck

BTW Cuba Gooding Jr....NEEDS a comeback. Its like the guy goes from being Oscar nominated to baby sitting little kids. What the hell happened Cuba? I mean you did good in the beginning....rmr pearl Harbor? He was pretty badass in that movie...he hes a good looking actor, and a good age to play John stewart. :)

@westsideDarkKnight, u say any black person that thinks DC isnt raceist is ingnorant, wow, i didnt know u can speak for all of us!! Look, DC main hero's shined in the 50's, before civil rights, back when being black in america wasnt easy, and a hero in our image didnt matter since we were lesser people, it wasnt until the 70's that black heros started to really surface, and the only black hero's for DC that had an actual importance in DC was black bolt and john stewart, as time rolled on they gave wonderwoman a black twin sister by the name of nubia, but decided to get rid of of her, also vixen was suposed to have her own comic in the 80's but it was canceled. The only black character DC had that really shined was static shock, he was created by black artists who felt that black superheros were greatly unrepresented in comics.
what i am saying is in this particular situation im not gonna call it racist because it makes sense to start off with hal and not john, however, that dosnt change that over 90% of DC's characters are made in a white image. and also U wanna talk about DC literature?? thank marvel for that.

MJ WHite may be 42, but Washington is like 55 now. Too old! He has played comedies (Carbon Copy, Heart Condition) and played villians (Training Day, American Gangster) btw. I think of him as a very good actor. He is no where near the dry piece of toast that is known as Keanu Reeves. But I can also agree, Airwolf, he's definitely over-hyped. Cuba Gooding is ok, but is too...meh. Probably too many cutsie roles have tainted my trust in his performance. And his voice is too gentle (no command). Will Smith, good actor, still looks like a goofball.

Returning to a youthier guy, what about Micheal Ealy?

LOL-I was going to suggest Rhames for it in jest (due primarily to age), but I thought, "you know, he'd actually lend to a good Kilowog!" At least as voice to an character in heavy make-up. And NO! I don't think Kilowog should be CGI. I don't think it would sell. They should do make up and only enhance with CGI. Rhames would have been good for Stewart 10-15 years ago.

@zinext
wow...people are really hung up on race!
So do we blame DC for playing to the larger white audience in America in order to stay in business. Look Americans as a whole are prejudice. And most white audiences do not relate to black characters (unless it's will smith lol) and most black people feel its not black enough unless it's done 100% by black people so they don't support it. (color purple perfect example, during the making of that movie, being directed by Spielberg. Many black people said that Spielberg can't get it right because he's not black and demanded a black director and nearly derailed the movie. Everyone shares blame not just dc.

the original point of my post was to say it made sense to dump John Stewart as GL in a JLA movie, if they are currently in active casting for a GL movie w/Hal Jordan.

I'm sure Common being let go had notheing to do with race. let's talk about what impact this news might have on a GL movie or a future JLA movie.

WestsideDarkKnight:

I'll take a stab at it! Er...none?

I like Stewart for the reasons that Hawk stated before. He's military. No nonsense. Executes with extreme prejudice! Love it.

I think he should follow behind Hal after the Parallax paradigm and take Kyle Rayner to be his protoge back up. You know, just in case he goes mad too.

There must be something about the color green that makes its characters destructive. Just posturing.

They should take the IronMan approach.

Have John just be the Buddy, then by the 2nd film, have him become a Green Lantern!

I mean, if you're so worried about trying to get the Black Green Lantern in the movie (for whatever reasons ;) ...do it like Iron Man!

If not...I won't cry about it.

DC isn't exactly known for black superheros anyway... Just make the movie good and people will watch... Black or Not... ;)

So don't worry about it... SupahPhreak!
