Green Lantern Casting: It's Down to Three

Green Lantern Casting: It's Down to Three

Apparently the pressure is on Warner Bros. to make a decision about who they want to cast as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the upcoming live action GL film as holding options on the three actors they've narrowed it down to -- Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake -- have expired.

Notes The Hollywood Reporter, "The studio ordered up two rounds of screen tests with Cooper, Reynolds and Timberlake. Other actors in the early mix included Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill and Jared Leto...Another issue impacting the casting process is the rising budget. 'Lantern' is a full-blown space epic that is expected to cost between $150 million and $200 million, if not more. Warners would like to have the production costs at a reasonable level before proceeding. The studio has scheduled the movie for a December 2010 opening."

Of the three actors -- and this is based on nothing more than supposition -- it would seem that Cooper would have the edge. For one thing, Reynolds is already pretty closely identified with Deadpool and has reportedly signed to star in his own spin-off from X-Men Origins: Wolverine (plus, does Warners want an actor playing a Marvel character portraying one of the key DC heroes?); and Justin Timberlake, despite his incredible success in the music industry, has yet to prove himself a strong enough actor to assume this role.

As to Cooper, given the success of "The Hangover" and his obvious appeal to the audience, it would seem that he would be a natural for the part. What are your thoughts on the subject?

So far for me at least Cooper hasn't made me think he can be grown up enough for a role such as this.

Guys, i've told you this a while ago. Look at all the actors that are being talked about!!! The media THINKS it's all about GL BUT IT'S NOT!!! Fillion ISN'T out of the running until dc OFFICIALLY says he is. All these actors you keep hearing about could all be cast for different roles. There's also no way in hell that DC would ever concider someone so attached to a Marvel character for their first JLAer!!! THE MEDIA IS OBLIVIOUS!!! It states in the first sentence that it's all suposition!!! That alone proves EVERYTHING i've been saying!!! What DC is doing is gathering as many pieces of the puzzle as possible, and then match the pieces to the characters to see which fits better!!! They're on a MUCH bigger scale than simply GL!!!

GUY GARDNER = LOUD MOUTH!

Dunno dancingmonkey @ maybe they wanna rush it???

It seems with this article the SOURCE has put 2 and 2 together and made 5!!!

SHAMANS got a point, this is for all DC movies! leading up to JLA!

I just wanted to present what the Hollywood Reporter was stating. And, Shaman, the "supposition" of the piece is mine following the report from the Hollywood Reporter. Of the three listed by the Reporter, I would go for Cooper. That beign said, I would REALLY prefer Nathan Fillion. I even liked the idea of Chris Pine playing the role, though having seen him as Kirk I'm not sure if it would work to have him in both roles.

Seriously? Of all the actors out there they narrow it down to THESE three? Un believable
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 6:20 AM
ED @ i said said that about PINE too, he would've played a good HAL if he hadn't of done TREK!

TEABAG @ ?????? Have you even read EMERALD DAWN? GREEN LANTERNS origin??? GUY has big part to play in HALs life! ; )

I know SUPERDOG @ That's why it makes perfect sense for one of these to be GUY GARDNER!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 6:23 AM
If they go with any of them as HAL, HAMMY is what it will be! ; )

They was better off wiv JACK BLACK! : D

I like and hope they use NONE of these guys. Cooper looks goofy, Reynolds is the Flash and Timberlake... PLEASE NO! He would probably make a green version of Brittney to help him or challenge Sinestro to a dance off. Plus Hal wasn't a skinny curly haired goof that has his penis in a box. They could do much better for this part. I do like Chris Pine. My opinion.
EdGross
EdGross - 7/10/2009, 6:26 AM
Obviously they're thinking something pretty epic with GL. Like Gregory Noveck said: this thing starts off as an earthbound superhero adventure and eventually becomes Star Wars.

longbowhunter - 7/10/2009, 6:29 AM
I really dont like the looks of this. Ryan Reynolds would have been a good choice if not for Deadpool. As far as Bradley Cooper, I'm not familiar with his work. Oh and NO JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE! I wish Warner Bros would wise up and let Nathan Fillion have his shot.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 6:31 AM
TEABAG @ GUY GARDNER is only supporting cast in the ORIGIN of HAL JORDAN??? He doesn't get a ring till after JON STEWART??? How can it be like Wolverine???

ED's right!!! GREEN LANTERN will be EPIC and that's what WARNER BROS will be thinking, that's why i see any one of them three guys as in the role of GUY GARDNER! Just makes the most sense!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 6:35 AM
I personally think both these guys could easily be GREEN LANTERN =

WORTHINGTON & FILLION

Though FILLION makes a great ALAN SCOTT too!
Shaman
Shaman - 7/10/2009, 6:37 AM
Ed- I know that it was your line but they are still asuming as well. They all go by what they're told and that means, roughly translated, horse shit. We all know that DC has no longer a choice in the matter. They're forced to do a Superman movie and they're already working GL. What they want is kick Marvel in the balls with JLA. So they HAVE to kick start JLA NOW. And that takes a shit load of dedicated actors. I'm not gonna believe SHIT until i hear OFFICIAL news from DC AND WB.

teabag- It's not true and it reaks of stupidity. And you can argue about Wolverine all you want but of all the 4 x-men films, Wolverine origins had by far the very best casting!!!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 6:42 AM
TEA @ If they pick any of them three for HAL JORDAN it will be worst than Wolvie!!! ; )

Better off with JACK BLACK lmao!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 7/10/2009, 6:48 AM
All 3 suck as choices for Hal Jordan. Cooper just looks has a comic relief face..as someone pointed out already, goofy! Reynolds couldn't be more miscast, have these people ever even read a [frick]ing comic? And Timberlake? No comment.

Like Shaman says, im sure this isn't even an accurate break down of things, or at least, i hope not!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 6:49 AM
ROR @ lol!

If any of them three get the part of HAL, i dread the casting for SUPERMAN! : /

That's why im saying GUY GARDNER!!! Am i the only one who has read EMERALD DAWN???
EdGross
EdGross - 7/10/2009, 7:03 AM
Not to go off on a complete tangent here -- though I guess I am, actually -- Leee brought up Superman. As a fan of Supes, I kind of like the idea that WB may be forced to get into production on another Superman movie by 2011. While rushing could be seen as a negative, something pretty cool could come out of them being forced to pull the project together.
Willroyboy
Willroyboy - 7/10/2009, 7:03 AM
besides the fact that they're overlooking everyone's favorite choice, Nathan Fillion, everything about this movie sounds good. They need to just make us happy by giving the role to Josh Duhamel since he's a close second to Fillion.

The only reason Bradly Cooper is being suggested is because he's popular right now. the other two are made for music and comedy. in fact Cooper is also only good for comedy too. Not superhero action.

and if they ever need a random monotone voiced british guy for gl, maybe worthington could be okay for it. and that picture of alan scott looks more like worthington than filion LEEE.

Also i think Sean Williams Scott could play a pretty good Guy Gardner, or Danny Bonaduce.....but not really.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 7/10/2009, 7:09 AM
ED @ Yeah hopefully! But hell no i don't want a rush job for WORTHINGTON for SUPES lol!

Willroyboy @ Id be happy with WORTHINGTON and FILLION for either HAL or ALAN GL's!!! Both would be cool for both!!! If you know what i mean.

BmanHall @ Me too! That's why i believe its for the role of GUY!

HEY!!! Anyone got WARNER BROS phone number??? Im gonna fone the frickers up lol! ; D

TEABAG @ Of course GUY and even JOHN will be in this movie as supporting cast an WB will set them up as GREEN LANTERN'S in the future!
comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 7/10/2009, 7:18 AM
Thank God we have the animated Green Lantern film coming out. At least that has a better chance of being good and of being true to the comics.

Others here have said it, and I echo the sentiments that nobody should begin to panic until we have an official announcement from a reliable source as to exactly who has been chosen to play Jordan. Anything until then is idle rumors. How many times have we seen people panicking on this site over rumors that proved to not be true? Hey, at least we may be safe from Jack Black! He's a fine comedic actor, but I couldn't see him as GL.

In the end I could see one of these guys playing Guy Gardner or doing the voice for (chuckle) G'nort.

Oh and GUY GARDNER SMIRKS all the time guys!!! GUY GARNER is a A$$HOLE! A lovable one but an A$$HOLE all the same! : D
EdGross
EdGross - 7/10/2009, 7:25 AM
I think all the talk of Guy Gardner is pointless, because, unless I'm mistaken (and that's always a distinct possibility), this script is focused squarely on Hal Jordan.
Shaman
Shaman - 7/10/2009, 7:26 AM
Ed- I'm totally with you on that one!!! A rushed Superman film is just what the doctor ordered. Instead of them denying script after script, they might just say yes to Millar's and have the Watchowskis film it!!! As for the actor they'll choose, who knows LEEE, they could very well be in a binge and say "[frick] it, get Routh on the phone!!!" since they damn well know he'd say yes. It would be unlikely but they really don't have much time to get their shit together!!! And your right again ED, this script is Hal, period. They're talking of inventing a new GL so i really don't think we'll ever get to see Guy. John however could very well have a small part in the movie to introduce him properly in the sequel.
