Green Lantern Corps: Brightest Day
SPECIAL NOTE: After the events of the previous film featuring him, Hal has permanently grey temples.
SPECIAL NOTE 2: PLEASE GIVE YOUR OPINIONS ON THE FOLLOWING ON THE COMICS. I LIKE TO HEAR WHAT PEOPLE THINK OR CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM.
This movie is the last bit of set up before Blackest Night begins. It's actually part of Blackest night. The story I have for this is, like Breaking Dawn, The Deathly Hallows, and Kill Bill, too large for just one movie. This is the beginning of Blackest night.
This is the movie where every lantern corps meets, and the war of light begins. When this film starts, we have the Sinestro corps trying to establish themselves as the dominant police force in the universe, the red lanterns roaming around the unknown regions of space killing smugglers and pirates, the Violet Corps trying to find The Predator, and the Blue Lanterns now with the Indigo tribe trying to rebuilt the green lanterns.
This is where we maneuver every character into place for blackest night.
SPECIAL NOTE 3: Running joke about Violet Lanterns being surprisingly vicious in battle.
New Characters:
Mongul I: a ruthless dictator. A warlord who travels the universe dominating worlds. He lives only for power and the riches he believes he fully deserves as one of the strongest beings in the universe, and the leader of one of the strongest armies in the universe. He is feared throughout the galaxy. When he gets his rings his constructs are kinda gladiator based with powerful canyons here or there.
The Indigo tribe: they are the lanterns of compassion. They behave similar to psychiatrists. They can teleport and use other Lantern corps energies.
Larfleeze: The only Orange lantern, and the greediest being in the cosmos. He is the owner of the orange power battery of avarice, and would not part with it for anything. He is consumed by greed, always wanting more, more, more, never able to gain enough to satisfy him. Simultaneously humorous and horrific, like Gollum. His concepts are completely unoriginal. He literally steals the likeness of those he kills, and uses their image as orange constructs that do his bidding.
We begin in space. There is a fleet of ships. These ships belong to Mongul I, a powerful warlord in the universe. His family has caused thousands of deaths throughout the universe and rule countless worlds. The fleet prepares to attack a planet when the Sinestro corps appear. They fight off Mongul’s fleet in the skies above this planet, leading to a battle between Sinestro and Mongul. The fleet is destroyed. Mongul is apparently killed. Sinestro establishes one of the Sinestro corpsmen as the new ruler of the planet, citing that the previous rulers weakness and inability to quell political uprisings led to them not having the order to establish a proper defensive force.
Sinestro rallies his corps to go across the galaxy and take what is theirs. They are the law now. They destroyed the Green Lanterns, but by doing so brought lawlessness to the galaxy. They must return order to the universe. The war against green lanterns is over, but the war against crime and chaos never ends. That is eternal, but so is fear. They will bring order to the universe, those that oppose them will die, fear will reign supreme, and all will bow before Sinestro's might. The Sinestro corps are sent out to take over worlds once owned by Mongul, and establish themselves as protectors of those sectors.
In space, Ganthet and Sayd explain the complex machinations leading up to this point as the 3 last lanterns listen. Ganthet and Sayd even explain some added information: only one group of the color spectrum is missing, and only the greatest green lantern can stop blackest night. The three green lanterns all agree this is insanely convoluted. But, they agree to help stop whatever is coming on blackest night. The energy koi chose them, and they have friend and family to protect on earth. They prepare for their mission. Before Ion can recreate the lantern corps, he will need a host. Someone to share the strain, and direct the rings towards those who are worthy. They need a new Mogo figure. That host must be the greatest of the green lanterns. Someone with immense willpower who can find others with willpower too. They need to find Hal Jordan.
On the ice planet of Tora, she speaks with her people. The shaman of her village has seen a great evil coming. The Black, the rot, is coming. Darkness will fall on the universe. Tora has decided to seek out Guy Gardner, the hero who saved their village, to seek help. The ship that once belonged to Lyssa Drak has been repaired, and Tora leaves for Earth.
On the planet of Korugar, Soranik Natu returns to her world. On her world she's somewhat of a controversial figure. While some see her as a hero, others see her as a figurehead of the planets corrupt government. In other parts of Korugar, the green lantern symbol is akin to a Swastika due to Sinestro's dictatorship years before. She just wants to get back to her job as a doctor though.
The government on Korugar has begun to paint her as a savior of the Galaxy, and tell the people she sacrificed her ring to save Korugar and all the other worlds. She goes to ask them to stop, but they attempt to convince her that Korugar needs a heroic figure if there is to be peace. The planet is currently undergoing political upheavals, and multiple civil wars. Sinestro was horrible, but he brought peace and order. He made the trains run on time. She can do the same according to them, and be better than Sinestro ever was. A true benevolent leader. They have their own ulterior motives though, planning to use her as a figurehead while they profit. She refuses, and leaves.
On Zamaron, the former Violet lanterns prepare to search the crystal caves for the predator. We see that the world's energy is dieing. The planet has nothing to power its cities. Carol talks to Fatality about Hal, and how after this is all over and they've stopped Sinestro, and whatever is coming with Blackest night, they have to find Hal. He needs help. They, and others, enter the caves.
Meanwhile, Mongul is alive. He managed to escape the explosive destruction of his fleet, and has returned to war world, the heart of his empire, a planet designed for no other purpose than war and destruction (the one from movie 2 was an artificial planet, but not THE WarWorld. Just a son's cheap imitation of his father's creation ). The planets he ruled have been taken over by the Sinestro corps. He wants revenge. He and his army attack a lone Sinestro Corpsman who has just been charged with being the ruler/protector of a sector previously under Mongul's rule. (Slushh) Mongul manages to kill him, ripping him apart and taking the ring for himself. He continues on his mission.
We go to deep space. Lyssa Drak is on an asteroid, reading the book of black, and learning the secrets of the universe. The book has given her strange powers, and has driven her even more insane than before. This is when Scar appears. Scar, dressed in a black cloak, which hides the horrific hole in her body from when she was killed by Parallax. She informs Lyssa that as keeper of the book, she has become the witness, the one who will record the secret events leading up to blackest night, as Scar once did. Scar feared the blackest night though, because she did not understand. Now she does. She and the black both seek the same thing: For peace to return to the universe. Soon, all will be enveloped by the dark, and peace will return. Then she disappears. It's unclear whether she was a hallucination or not.
Soranik learns from reports on Korugar that other worlds have begun to fall to Sinestro's corps. Many fear the return of Sinestro. Others welcome it. Soranik is attacked by a group that believes she is in league with Sinestro, but they are quickly killed by police.
On Zamaron, Carol, Fatality, John, and others search the caves for The Predator, and soon find it. But, the predator attacks, trapping those it hits in Crystals. The Crystals show those they envelop their ideal fantasized future. Carol, however, realizes she's in an illusion when she notices both her and Hal Jordan are living happily on earth and their relationship isn't in a constant state of collapse. She breaks free, becoming worthy of the predator. It now behaves less like a beastly dragon, and more like a dog. A guard dog that could attack others at any moment, but a dog.
Mongul at this point has killed several Sinestro corps members, tracking them in his war worlds scanners and beating them with weaponry and his brute hulking strength.( Bedovian, Horku, Kiriazis, Low, and Flayt) He has six Sinestro corps rings, each chose him, for he is one of the most feared beings in the universe. Second only to one: Sinestro. The next phase of his plan begins. His war world and the fleet of ships at his command around it begin the voyage towards Korugar.
Tora arrives on Earth, crashing onto the streets of Metropolis. Superman arrives. She wants to speak to Guy Gardner. Superman says he can take her to friends of Guy’s, but he's not on Earth. She is brought to the Justice League. Fire is there(a new recruit from the most recent JL movie before this.) She explains the situation, the JL calls some of earth's magic using heroes to keep a lookout for anything, and it's discovered that there have been bizarre occurrences and signs of Necromancy on Stryker's Island, the prison housing William Hand.
The Green, Blue, and Indigo Lanterns travel to a desolate, rocky world that Hal Jordan has exiled himself onto, pouring rain to the point of flooding. The lanterns put up shields, and use their rings to search for the source of the yellow energy on this world, Hal Jordan. Kyle has a conversation with an Indigo lantern. They soon discover an exact replica of Coast City, made completely from yellow energy.
They enter the city, as we see Jessica's ring begins to falter from her fear, but returns to normal. The city is filled with constructs of people, enjoying their days at the beach, working in the office, it's eerie.
On Korugar, the War World arrives, blocking out the sun. It's massive, and it's weapons are aimed at Korugar. Mongul decrees that the planet belongs to him now. If the governments of Korugar resist, their worlds riches will be plundered, and then the planet will be destroyed. He then sends out a message across the galaxy, to every intergalactic messaging device there is, it's even picked up on Earth, calling for Sinestro to face him for his planet's survival. Sinestro hears this message, and prepares to fight.
On Zamaron, the power battery is prepared, Carol sends the Predator into the massive Violet power battery, and as it swims through the energy it creates, the Star Sapphires rings are restored, as are the cities of this world's energy. John gets a Violet ring( as all Violet lantern costumes are a bit sexualized, his uniform ends up having an overly long 70s Nightwing style V-neck) Then they hear the transmission sent out by Mongul, and decide they must go to Korugar, to save the people, and establish themselves as the true guardians of life in the universe, not the Sinestro Corps. Carol has their corps name changed to her original idea for a super hero name: Star Sapphire.
On Earth, we see Clark Kent reporting at Stryker’s Island. He is also secretly checking things out for the league. Today is William Hands execution, after he murdered his family, and attempted a terrorist attack on a Detroit train station that would have killed dozens of people. There were plans in the basement of the Hand Funeral Home for more attacks. As Hand eats his last meal, lights flicker and we hear the voices in his head, telling him that the time has come. He loves death as others love life, and he will be Nekron’s anchor to this world. He will give the black physical form. We hear Scar’s voice too. She will give him the power to control death.
“The Blackest Night falls from the skies, The darkness grows as all light dies, We crave your hearts and your demise, By my black hand, the dead shall rise!”
As he is electrocuted, the black ring forms from his own body. He dies, but then he returns, and then all others in the room do too. The lights go out. Then they rise. The guards, the executioner, they all wear black rings. They have become the undead. Their lives have given energy to William Hand, and now they serve him in death.
The Last Green Lanterns, and the Blue and Indigo discover Parallax. In the center of the false Coast city he lies, huddled into a ball. He screams for them to leave, before it's too late. Then Parallax takes control. He feels their fear. He traps the Indigo and Blue, separating them from the last lanterns, and then he begins. Attacking them all with their fears simultaneously, but they fight through it. They were chosen. But then Hal reveals the truth. They were not chosen, they were never worthy. Why do they think Ion needs him? Because Ion can't send the rings to those with great will. That was Mogo’s job. Simon, Jessica, and Kyle were picked at random. They were a means to an end, and they don't matter. They were never heroes, they were just the first ones Ion saw. They are filled with fear.
Sinestro arrives with an army of Yellow Lanterns at Korugar. He attacks the War World, but Yellow Lanterns around him are killed by yellow energy.(C.H.A.D., Dual Eknham) He discovers Mongul, wielding about a dozen Sinestro corps rings. Their fight begins. Soranik watches from the streets below.
On Earth Superman arrives, attempting to fight Black Hand and his zombies. But Black Hand takes control of him. The dead serve Black Hand. Superman was once dead, but returned to life. Black Hand controls Superman. Superman becomes a zombie, and a member of the Black Lantern Corps.
Simon battles the coast city energy beings as they transform into demons, mocking him and slicing at him with their claws. A thousand cuts, tiny pricks all building up. That's been his whole life. Jessica begin to give into her fears, as Parallax drains her life force. Kyle tries to save her, she's stronger than this, she proved it, they all did. They proved their own worth. Kyle has lived his entire life watching extraordinary people fly through the skies and save the day. He's learned from them, he wrote about them, and made cartoons of them. Jessica and Simon are both worthy, because Kyle looks up to them. The Lanterns unite against Parallax. They saved themselves, but their mission is to save him.
On Korugar the battle rages on, as the people of Korugar look up into the sky and see Sinestro not as a villainous dictator, but as their savior against Mongul.
Parallax battles the three lanterns. Trapped inside Hal tries to fight back, and escape. He can do it. All his life he's tried to be worthy, to be his father, but now he realizes it was never about him. He failed, he made mistakes, he couldn't save everyone, he's not the greatest green lantern, but these three are. They are the best the corps has to offer, and they are the light that will bring back the green lanterns. Finally, he rips free of Parallax. The city fades around him, and Ganthet and Sayd capture the fear entity, trapping it in a lantern.
Hal Jordan is back, telling the last lanterns that they are the ones who need to restart the corps, not him.
Across the galaxy, rings coming from Ion return to former Green Lanterns, and to new green lanterns. As the Star Sapphires head to Korugar, John’s ring returns to him. Kilowog gets a ring, and on the streets of Korugar where the battle takes place, Soranik once again becomes a green lantern. She flies up, joining her father against Mongul. The two have a brief reunion(Soranik still hates Sinestro for the things he did, but she’ll work with him to save Korugar) Mongul is stabbed through the heart by Sinestro, but in his dying breath shoots a spear at a distracted Soranik trying to save civilians on a high rise building. Sinestro takes the hit, and dies in Soranik’s arms, confessing everything he did, he did so she could have a better life.
The Green Lantern Corps and the Star Sapphires arrive too late. The battle is over. Sinestro's ring was, according to Sinestro corps members near Soranik, programmed so that in the event of his death, it would go directly to her. No matter how much she tried to remove it, it would follow her. Soranik, as the people of Korugar watch her below, accepts the ring. She is the leader of the Sinestro corps now. She will be the hero Korugar needs.
Ganthet and Sayd have one more stop now. Blackest night is at their doors, and the corps must be united. There is one corps left. They, along with Kyle, Simon, Hal, Jessica, the blue lanterns, and the Indigo tribe head to a small moon filled with nothing but “riches” It looks like a planet of the hoarders. They arrive at a massive, but empty(aside from the ten of every objects) abode on the moon. This place was set aside for an ally of the Guardians of The Universe. He is always willing to help, for a price. They discover Larfleeze, feasting on a piece of elephant sized raw meat. On his finger is an Orange Lantern Ring, at his side an orange power battery. On his walls are dozens of green lantern rings, and four Sinestro corps rings. Ganthet and Sayd inform him that the universe is ending and will offer him a blue ring for his aid. He raises it to two, and takes the offer.
All the corps are teleported together by the indigo tribe(we see right behind Soranik a dead body get up right before she teleports). Hal reunites with Carol, and his other old friends, Guy included. There, it is explained that Blackest night has begun. All the corps are needed to face the black, Nekron. Each Corps gives its Oath at the same time , as various deceased characters (including Slipknot) rise from grave on Earth and the shadow of Black Lantern Mogo blocks out the sun.
End Credits Scene: We see that immediately before Soranik was teleported away, she went to the capitol building of Korugar’s government and killed the corrupt men that tried to turn her into what she has now become. She will be Korugar's dictator, and it's hero, and it's savior, but she will not allow the corrupt to profit off of her. They are the first people she has ever killed.
