Why is everyone hating on Green Lantern?

Why is everyone hating on Green Lantern?

I've noticed that ever since the Green Lantern trailer, many people said negative things about everything from the CGI suit to Ryan Reynolds taking the title role. Let me bring up a few things about what people are saying.

Editorial Opinion

1. "The idea of a CGI suit sounds lame!"

I have to agree that a CGI suit is not exactly my first option. But sometimes, it can enhance features (e.g., add more brightness) that wouldn't be there if the suit isn't CGI. Besides, I think the suit(s) look fantastic in live action format.

2. "It'll likely have terrible acting in it."

You haven't seen more than three minutes of footage (if that much), and you make such an assumption so soon? I'm not sure about the other cast members, but Ryan Reynolds looks absolutely perfect as a live action translation of Hal Jordan. Sure, the trailer seems to start out on the wrong foot (more on that in the next quote), but the little they showed was excellent, in my opinion.

3. "The trailer starts out like a romance comedy!"

Again, I'd have to agree with the quote. I, personally, don't approve of sexuality being injected into movies (especially franchises that started out clean but were later sexed up...*coughTransformerscough*, and I have a feeling that Green Lantern would, indeed, be a DC version of Iron Man slightly because of the opening seconds of the trailer. Maybe Jordan is a womanizer? Can someone please fill me in?

4. "A Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern would not fit into a Justice League movie."

Who said anything about Reynolds' GL franchise crossing over with other DC characters? I personally think that, from what I've seen, Reynolds looks comfortable in the role enough to not intersect with other comic book heroes.

5. "It'll likely be a flop at the box office."

Considering that he's one of the more popular DC characters (Batman and Superman aside), I'd find it hard to imagine Green Lantern being a flop on his first big-screen adventure, but I know for a fact it won't meet the heights of its predecessors (e.g., Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy). Besides, this is DC's first try at a lesser-known comic character (they've only previously done Superman five times [and a sixth on its way], Batman six [with 7 well on its way], and Catwoman [Don't get me started...I've seen 3 minutes of Catwoman and I almost died], not counting graphic novel characters [such as Jonah Hex, Watchmen, etc]), so it has to be a win at the box office. Otherwise, the chances of other characters such as The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, etc. being reinvented in the 21st century more unlikely.

So, those were some complaints I've noticed about Green Lantern (I'm mostly not directing at specific quotes, by the way), and I just wanted to say some things about 'em. Thanks!

I'm wondering why people think Reynolds' GL wouldn't fit in a JL movie...... That's just retarded.

- I like it that they've moved him from the desert to a rocky beach. Looking over it.
Almost star gazing. As Hal says: "No matter how bad things get, something good is out there, just over the horizon..."

- Abin Sur looks phenomenal!

- Hal is in shock, who wouldn't? So serious too!

- This picture made me so happy I almost cried. Just look at that ring. Its power, it's blinding brilliance.
Love how they made it like a heavy ring, like a weapon with the emerald inside. Absolutely love it!

- This is by far the most serious and true I've seen Ryan Reynolds. I think this is going to be an amazing and honest Ryan Reynolds.
This will be his best work!

- One of the most iconic and epic images in the history of comicbooks. Hal holding the ring and Abin Sur is dying! I love this picture!
It's so beyond epic!

- Brilliance!

- Kilowog looks just as he should. If you save this picture you might notice he got some stubby hairs on his cheek.

- Somewhat unclearer but tranquil Sinestro decending in awe.

- Just look at it! Look at the bulks, the scratching of its material. Beautiful! Once again, brilliance!

- I love how it's fluid like. I had a better picture which I use as my avatar but I dont want everybody to have it! =p

1. Now, I loved the costume. Why would an intergalactic bunch of aliens wear a spandex like costume? It does not make any sense(South Park reference)! I love that the costume is organic, it looks alien, it feels cold and different. It's like this shield, almost living layer of armour. It's exactly what a Green Lantern in real life would have. And that every single GL got their own take on it is brilliant! You're completely right.
2. Once again you are right.
3. Hal Jordan likes the ladies. And he doesn't try to hide it. He uses them, and they love him. In the comics Hal went on the road because he was afraid of responsibilty with Carol. He wants love but he has a problem with it. And then he just bangs alot of woman.
You dont personally approve of sexuality being injecting into the movies? I dont get that. Sex makes everything great! Hell, I haven't seen Tranformers 2 but I hear that the best part was Megan Fox.
Another grotesque claim is that Green Lantern is replicating Iron Man in it's tone and style. Iron Man is probably the film with the closest tone. We don't know as we havent seen GL yet but just because The Dark Knight was 'dark' means that WB/DC has patened the whole "serious/dark" style? Wtf?
4. I dont really care that much about a Justice League film but it would be cool!
5. It will probably be a box office success. Now, if it doesn't do as good as WB want it to, I wouldn't worry that much. They've know they have a goldmine. They will use it. But they are some sly bastards! And slow as [frick] too!

I also think it's worth to point out that people who troll this film, and do so with utter ignorance, will not change their mind or opinion about it, even if it is a very decent film. People have become dogmatic at this. Even I, a DCfanboy am psyched about watching Thor and Captain America. And though I don't really care that much about them in reality, I will reserve my judgement until I've seen the films. We got one Tier 1 superhero, and two Tier 2 superheroes coming out this summer. We should be excited and wait until we see the films instead of being really dumb. I dont know if this is true or not. Maybe the Green Lantern will be terrible. I think however it's backwards to make up your mind about a film before you've even seen it. I think it will be a great film!
Just to make an assumption based on a trailer when it comes to CBM's is a tad inane. I have never seen Reynolds work this hard before, neither has anyone else probably. He seems to get Hal Jordan very nicely after from the interviews. He even has tears is in eyes, a new feature in the history of the ring passing. I think this film will be great. It's story and mythology is so rich and amazing, it cannot be any less than wonderous.

The trailer could've featured some clips of Parallax, or the Guardians, Kilowog saying poozer or Sinestro showing his skills to Hal. That would've been great! The first trailer is more aimed at the mainstream audience, and also the post-production had just been in development for 2 months. Of course the CGI isnt perfected. No matter what, we won't ever see the exact character adapation we want. Green Lantern will be a modern film. It's absurd to dismis it just because some didn't like the first trailer. There was even some humour in The Dark Knight which supposedly was super serial(South Park, if you don't get it)! This film is gonna be great. So are the other contenders this summer. It's gonna get emerald green this summer! I can't wait!

Please watch it it in hd!

Totally agree man, people are jumping the gun on what is basically three minutes of quick footage. I say reserve judgment until you actually see the movie

It's odd how people point out the few comedic bits of the trailer and ignore the more dramatic ones which, even in just this trailer, show Reynolds' ability. I love the suit, though it could be a tad darker. Bad acting? The name "Mark Strong" and "bad acting" do not even belong in the same dimension. The actors themselves have expressed knowledge of their characters and have made the effort to learn about them. I'm confident that this will be a great and successful franchise.
Okay, c'mon intruder and grif, bring on the negativity!

@PaulRom: Maybe Jordan is a womanizer? Can someone please fill me in?

Yes, when he doesn't have a stable love interest (like before he gets the ring or, more recently, before revealing to his colleague "cowgirl" his true identity) he is a womanizer.

@multipurpose you have a point...I'd rather not have any, but the less the better. At least they're getting Jordan's womanizing in the comics right.

Ummmm.... Jonah Hex is not a Graphic Novel Character. He first appeared in an ongoing series (Weird Western Tales) and currently has his own ongoing series which is over 60 issues. Jonah Hex is a minor DC character ,yes, but he is popular enough to hold a series for over five years. He is even in the DCuniverse (although in the 1800's) and meets the JL from time to time through time travel. He was an interesting enough character to get and have a good epic movie. Unfortunatly he didn't get the movie he deserved.

It will be great, Martin Campbell is not a brett ratner, Mark steven johnson, or Joel shumacher. The guy reinvented James Bond twice and has Mark strong as Sinestro, Peter Skasgard as Hector Hammond, Angela Basset as Amanda Waller, and Tim Robbins. The movie is going to dive into the mythology of the Green Lantern corps and has the right amount of GL's to show the vast population of the Corps. I have no worries

Good article PaulRom.
Anyone saying that Ryan Reynolds can't act hasn't seen Buried. An hour and a half of great acting on his part, he's really good and made me confident about him playing Hal Jordan.
There's a lot of biased hatred from some Marvel fanboys... we have to just let it be, we can't reason with that kind of ranting.
I'm really looking forward to next summer, I have at least three comic book movies to look forward to! If some Marvel fanboys wanna hate on Green Lantern, hey... their F#@*ING loss!
PaulRom
PaulRom - 1/21/2011, 10:27 AM
@Angelus lolwut? No offense NinjaCarm, but anyone who thinks a TMNT movie is the best CBM ever hasn't seen anything by Christopher Nolan.
golden123
golden123 - 1/21/2011, 4:42 PM
@PaulRom: In all fairness to ninjacarm that editorial basically said TMNT is the best because it stays closest to the source material and still manages to be good. You have to admit that Chris Nolan's films stray very far from the source material. So I think in NinjaCarm's mind Chris Nolan's films have been very good movies but that doesn't classify them as the best CBMs.

PaulRom
PaulRom - 1/22/2011, 7:11 AM
@Golden123 I don't think that that's what makes a CBM good. Sure it might help, but what really makes one strong (which works for every movie, of course) is a strong script, convincing acting, and a director who knows what he's doing. Inception and the last two Batfilms have all of that.

I think John Stewart needs to be introduced for the 2nd movie, especially if this one DOES flop, which I don't think it will. I hope it won't because I'm so pumped to see it. But John Stewart is more of a full embodyment of Green Lantern, and his character would work better with the Justice League if they ever decide to put that movie together. And thats why I'm also disappointed they are doing Barry Allen and not Wally West for the Flash in the movie.
