Did Marvel Leave Rocket Raccon's Creator Out In The Cold?

The man tasked with bringing Rocket Raccoon to the big screen, Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn, took to Facebook to dispel rumors about Bill Mantlo's relationship with Marvel. Find out what he had to say after the jump.

In a post to his Facebook account last night, James Gunn passed along information regarding Bill Mantlo, creator of Rocket Raccoon.

In the post, Gunn declared his affinity for Mantlo's work:

I am an enormous fan of Bill's work -- his run on Micronauts and Rom were two of the reasons I fell in love with comics as a child -- and I'm honored and blessed to be making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie featuring his creation."

At his most prolific, Matlo's work would appear in as many as eight different Marvel titles a month, and his total output exceeded 500 issues. He was also a trial lawyer, until a tragic accident cut both careers short.

After receiving some concerned messages in regard to Mantlo, including indignation about his medical condition and the perception that Marvel may have given him a raw deal, Gunn shared an insightful Facebook post from Mantlo's brother Mike:

Marvel has compensated, is compensating, and will continue to compensate Bill well into the future for anything that he's entitled to compensation for. Please don't spread false or malicious rumors, gang. Bill's relationship with Marvel is EXCELLENT, and I wish for it to continue to be so. And all the false or exaggerated 'facts' being tossed around about his accident (he was NOT in a coma for 'years', and the family was NOT put into financial ruin or destitution, among other WRONG 'facts'). Yes, Bill was the victim of a horrible and tragic accident. Blowing everything out of proportion does no one any good. You guys (ALL OF YOU) have been a Godsend to Bill for these past 22 years by keeping his name & reputation alive, and by continuing to champion my cause of helping him improve his quality of life in whatever way I can, and I thank you ALL sincerely for that. Please, let's try some positive energy for the future, so that BILL MANTLO WILL RULE FOREVER!

It would appear, then, that any animosity toward Marvel is unfounded.

Gunn concluded with the following:

I am and will always be a fan and supporter of Bill Mantlo.

He was an attorney. I'm sure he understood the work-for-hire agreement he entered into with Marvel.

seeing that ROM cover again, I just find it sad that if only Marvel and Hasbro would agree to co-produce that movie together...man that could be a real winner.

Wow, didn't even know this. Great that Marvel is supporting him and still giving him what he deserves. After listening to FatManOnBatman with Neal Adams talking about Superman's creators it just amazed me that something like that can happen and does happen.

I dont see any hatred towards the two in there comments. It seems Gunn really respects Bill Mantlo's also Marvel is compensating him so in fact no one is getting left out in the cold. It just seems like some one is spreading rumors about the two.

Wait. The title of the article makes Marvel sound like dicks. But the actual article says the very opposite. Confused?

Mantlo was not abandoned by Marvel, but he was abandoned by - as many people have been - the US healthcare system. So shameful.

I loved his work on Rom. His work on the Spectacular Spider-Man was very good, not just a repeat of the main title. Years ago, I remember reading a blog piece by a Marvel office person who stated that he was trying to be a little to political with some scripts, which led to disputes with management, which then led to his eventual departure in the late 1980s.

I'm glad that was cleared up. I'm sorry to hear about Bill Mantlo. I hope he is doing well.

Also, DC/WB didn't start rumors about Marvel Studios. That is absurd. If DC/WB actually did that, they would risk being caught and that would lead to a media firestorm coming down on them. Which would be bad for business.

If anybody thinks that is true, you're not thinking logically.

@Humperdink That's fantastic! You're a very talented artist. When I first saw that pic, I assumed the artist was someone who worked for Marvel.

the worst part of this was not that people erroneously thought there is any truth to the drama, it's that apparently they want it to be and are almost disappointed upon finding that this is the case

@bropous well the linked article goes into how his health is tied into his struggles with the healthcare industry. How better to honor the man who devoted his entire career to changing minds and values than to demand changes from the industry that almost ruined he and his family's lives? Some of that change, fortunately, is already happening yet unfortunately is meeting up with some fierce resistance. Ironically, the man who infused his comics scripts with calls to increase awareness on social issues himself became an example of why things need to change.
Hence bropous, you can go ahead and honor the man by writing whatever you want to write in a comment section, but I will honor him by trying like hell to increase awareness on the healthcare industry that caused Bill Mantlo and his family so much needless grief.
Rom the Space Knight was the first comic book I ever purchased with my allowance money. Bill Mantlo was my gateway into the comic book world. For that, I will forever be in his debt.

I think the problem is that people automatically think that Marvel(or WB/DC) is going to screw the creators of characters. I think this comes about from the past were both companies have been sued over the rights of characters.

I remember Ed Brubaker haven't to tell people stop spreading rumors about being compensated for Captain America: Winter Solder.

The problem is that people like to think they know what is going with out any facts to back things up.
