James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy, Powers, and Nova

I love Guardians of the Galaxy. I love the DNA run and I love the movie. I also love Nova and super powers. By the end of this, you may be convinced I hate the movie.

Richard Rider
James Gunn doesn't want to use Nova for Guardians 2, doesn't like his helmet, and appears to be fairly indifferent to the character. I don't want him in Guardians 2 either. While I do have the unrealistic wish for Richard Rider to have his own movie, there are quite a few other reasons.

For starters, I'm not convinced Guardians 2 will be any good.

Cosmo and Rocket
James Gunn doesn't appear to like super powers.Gunn left out all the characters with powers: Adam Warlock, Moondragon, Phyla Vell, Quasar, Phylla Vell as Quasar, Mantis, Captain Universe, Starhawk, etc.  And then Gunn depowered everyone else. The Collector, a character that goes toe to toe with Thanos and the Avengers in the comics, an Elder of the Universe, gets his shop blown up. Drax isn't a human remade to kill Thanos, who knows if he has a human telepathic daughter bonded with a psychic dragon, probably not.  The Nova Corps doesn't have powers and the Worldmind is just a backdrop and not their primary tool for communication. The deadliest woman in the galaxy is a damsel in distress. Ronan's hammer isn't a Universal Weapon. Cosmo was just a dog in a space suit.

The closest we get to super powers is Drax and Groot.  And the most we see on the screen are the most boring: super strength, regeneration, and invulnerability. This is a Marvel Cosmic movie and those are the best super powers we get. Marvel Cosmic, the home of crazy philosophy, planet eaters, gambling gods, and a plethora of races that have the native ability to fly and the best we get is really strong and bullets don't hurt.

As a massive fan of the DNA run on Cosmic Marvel, given all the evidence here, why should I hope Gunn will respect the aspects of Cosmic Marvel I love? Guardians was a comic filled with strong women: Mantis, Phyla Vell, Moondragon, Gamora.  And I would be remiss not to mention Moondragon and Phyla Vell being a prominent gay couple.  Gamora's entire role in the film is for motivation for Quill.  As the deadliest woman in the galaxy she manages to not win a fight with Quill (granted he doesn't win either) and need to be saved by Quill in prison and in space.  Gamora is reduced to a damsel in distress and love interest for Quill. Quill is the least interesting character of the group. As enjoyable as Chris Pratt was in the movie he's still the least interesting. And next movie we're supposed to care about who his Dad is?  The quality of the Bendis' run of Guardians is certainly debatable but Gunn has already stated that Star Lord's dad won't be J'son.
Phyla-Vell and moondragon

Gunn has talked time and time again about how important Yondu and Nebula are, two characters that had no story arc in the movie!  They were the same characters going in as they went out, no development what so ever.

I'm sure the second movie will be as popular as Iron Man 3 and will earn close to a billion dollars. Marvel seemingly doesn't make bad moves. Gunn doesn't seem to have any actual reverence for the actual comic characters themselves. He's more interested in the stuff he made up. He's a creator, that's what they do. I'm just expecting the second movie to go on a path that is going to irritate me the whole time. Thus I state the opinion: it won't be any good.

I'll be there day one but I don't want Richard Rider in Guardians 2. He wouldn't get the time he deserved and he would be powerless. And I'd rather have a director who enjoys the character and the look running him. Of course the reality is Richard Rider will never see the light of day in a Marvel movie. If a main character that is a Nova member shows up it'll be Sam. Its less disappointing if I expect it.

i love the DNA run, i also loved GOTG despite being very different from the source material. what you said about yondu and nebula, i dont think it matters that those 2 didnt get any development especially yondu how he was portrayed in the film, not every character needs to change throughout a single movie. I feel nebula changed/showed her true colours, i think she showed that she would gladly betray thanos if she thinks it can work and i personally feel we will see her change going into infinity war.

also i think drax was an alien instead of a human in an aliens body because gunn wanted quill to be the only terran/human from earth. i would love to see him assumed dead in GOTG2 then in the after credits scene he is found by the mentor who takes him to chronos and gives him the power to stop thanos.

I loved the movie but have the same kinds of gripes you had. When I think cosmic I think the most powerful beings in the mu. What we got were characters on the level or below what we got with the earth side heroes. The movie was still great, but I want more from the cosmic side. We saw like two seconds of celestial, which was great, but other than that no real powers on display.

I think on earth they would be a lot stronger than most of the avengers, quill obviously has something in him too from his father

Plus I had a theory quite a while ago. Kinda disappointed it didn't catch on. Anyways, I believe the Nova Corps did have powers. Its just spread so thinly amongst so many Corpsman. You dont see it till they come together. You really think those little ships could expend that amount of energy for than long? No.......I think the Nova Corps were channeling their combined power THROUGH their ships. Now that so many have died, the ones that survived should become more powerful, or just more power returned to the Nova Prime. Wont know for sure until Marvel tells us though.

If you recall, the Centurions had cannons on their gauntlets. We never got to see any of the Centurions in any close quarters combat either. The guys at the prison were all pretty low ranking. The lower the rank, the lower the amount of Nova Force that member receives. At least thats the way it is in the comics. Maybe not the movies. But if we would of seen the Centurions go to battle on foot, would they have seemed physically more powerful than the others? And could they have channeled their Nova Force through those blasters on their wrists? If im correct in my theory then they would have. Remember in the comics Richard Rider is so powerful because he housed the ENTIRE Nova Force within himself. So his strength, flight and energy manipulation powers were above the norm for the Nova Corps. In the movies, its how you would say, butter spread thinly over too much bread.

@musim. I respect your opinion. Just keep in mind that Gunn couldn't use those characters because those ones specifically have MUCH more complicated origins. This movie had to establish these characters in one movie. With no films leading up to it to help flesh out their origins. Drax took the Brun of it. They simplified his origin by just making him an alien who lost his family. I dont want them to have to take shortcuts with too many other characters too. It doesn't make sense to pick characters for your story just because of who has the most powerful power sets. Or the coolest. No, you pick the ones that serve the story your telling the best. We will get the others soon. Now that the GOTG have been established they can focus on more characters in the sequel. Im sorry you feel like you wont enjoy it.

I was thinking that maybe the Nova Force wasn't as powerful as in he comics yet but it will be. now that the Nova Cops has possession of the Power Stone they could use energy from the Stone to either create the Nova Force or to really increase the existing Nova Forces power levels. I think that's a great way for them to take the Nova Corps as we saw them in he movie and really turn them into a cosmic force to be reckoned with. until hey are all killed except for Ryder. The same way they Power Stone to increase the Nova Force thy can use it to increase the World Mind and make it something closer to the comics. This would allow them to give us a truly powerful Nova Corps, a powerful World Mind and provide a strong tie in to the Stones other then just destruction. plus it would take all of 3 minutes of screen time to explain.
