It's hard to imagine anyone other than James Gunn being in charge of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise (which is why there was so much backlash when it didn't look like he would be back for Vol. 3), but would you believe that Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow very nearly boarded the Marvel Cinematic Universe with that movie?

Now, though, he's revealed why he knew he wasn't the right man for the job.

"I met on Guardians of the Galaxy long, long ago," the filmmaker revealed. "Yeah, very early. It was a great conversation."As for why it didn't work, he added: "I was not a comic book kid. That wasn’t my thing. I was a Star Wars kid, an Indiana Jones kid, a Spielberg kid – that was my thing."

"It was a great conversation, but a little bit more of a personal understanding of, you need someone who loved this growing up. [They] should be the ones directing these movies. You’ve gotta live and breathe it in the way that I did Jurassic and these films that I get to be involved in now."

Trevorrow is expected to take the helm of the next Jurassic World movie and was going to direct Star Wars Episode IX before creative differences led to him parting ways with Disney and Lucasfilm.

Do you guys think he would have been a good fit for Guardians of the Galaxy

To be honest I kinda feel sad for the guy, having left the Star Wars franchise which he loved as a kid. And for the Jurassic franchise, I actually liked World and am interested in what he is gonna do next with the franchise

I mentioned this in the responses to his short film, but we’ve come so far from the meticulous plotting of Michael Crichton and his efforts to make the fantastical seem possible. I don’t really respect the guy as a storyteller.

@dirkthedaring - Heh... I’ll cop to being unclear that the guy I don’t respect is Trevorrow, although I would think that the context of saying that Crichton’s plotting is meticulous (which means “showing great attention to detail”) offers a bit of a clue as to which one I admire.

But either way, the venom of your response is pretty funny.

Bullets were dodged

Gunn has put together 2 of the best CBMs to date and they're very much based in what he brought to the table as well as his passion for the characters and the source material

Well his loss was our gain. I think Trevarrow only has one good film under his belt with Safety Not Guaranteed. I think he's proven time and time again that he was a one trick pony after delivering Jurassic World, Book of Henry, and Fallen Kingdom.

Get him out of the franchise and keep him out of Star Wars and the MCU.

Turned down the job? He met with Marvel, but doesn't say he was offered the job. Yo, Josh, misleading title. ;)

I'm glad we dodged that bullet.. yikes, on a side note I did like the short film Big Bad rock that just released. Simple yet effective, but he can't write for shit lol

@bobevanz - Yeah, you’d think all these Trevorrow’s and Abrams’s that admire Spielberg so much would realize at some point that Spielberg never wrote his own movies; maybe they shouldn’t either.
