My Guardians of the Galaxy write ups were met with mostly positive comments despite me making an error or two. As a follow up to those I am going to introduce a few of the characters who will also be debuting August 1, 2014 when James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy comes to theaters.
The Badoon are an ancient alien race who have gone some not so subtle stylistic changes over the years and an interesting addition to the MCU because they have ties to so many of the great Cosmic stories that Marvel can tell.
The Badoon culture seemed to have some serious issues as they originally split into two factions, one male and one female, before the male Brotherhood actually enslaved the female Sisterhood and eventually moved off the planet to be away from the females unless it was time to mate. Either the Badoon were doing it very right or very wrong...
The Badoon have long sought, as almost all of the alien races in the Marvel universe have, to conquer the galaxy but have been defeated in all their attempts to take over Earth by the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and other heroes. Though the Badoon seem to be galactic runner-ups to the big timers like the Kree, Skrulls and Shi'ar, there are two specific events in their comic history that may be of significance to future MCU entries.
First, and most directly related to Guardians of the Galaxy, it is the Badoon who come to Earth meaning to kill the heir to the Spartoi empire: Peter Quill, Star-Lord. The Badoon succeed in killing Quill's mother, but fail to kill a young Peter leaving him to fulfill his destiny and become the Star-Lord. Recently Chris Pratt, who will play Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, told Empire that while we will see Quill's origin, Guardians is a team movie and will not focus solely on his character.
The significant arc involving the Badoon is the Korvac saga, one of Marvel comics ultra-team ups which involved both the Avengers and the original Guardians of the Galaxy along with other characters such as Ronan the Accuser making appearances. In this story the Badoon have become THE galactic power in the 30th century and have conquered Earth. A human, Michael Korvac, serves them willingly and is cybernetically enhanced by them. Eventually Korvac becomes a god and comes to Earth. He is chased by the original Guardians of the Galaxy, one of which, Yondu, will be seen in the August 2014 release. Once on Earth he is challenged by a team of Avengers and Guardians, but proves too powerful for even them. The Korvac story also involves the Collector and his daughter, Carina, who we may well see in Guardians as well. The Korvac Saga is a great read and many of its components are going to be on screen soon. I won't be shocked if we see a Korvac movie down the road.
So while we may only see a glimpse of the reptilian Badoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, don't be sure that they may not be seen again down the road. That's bow on the Badoon. Next up, the mastermind behind all the madness of Avengers and many movies to come: Thanos, the Mad Titan. Better get to know him now as Marvel's Infinity will be in stores next week!
