James Gunn Discusses Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, Says It Will Have "Fewer Characters"

James Gunn may have just directed a massive ensemble blockbuster, and he is currently writing its sequel, but he does not want to get overwhelmed by too many characters. He recently sat down for an interview with Periscope to answer fans’ questions, and Screen Rant was gracious enough to provide a partial transcript. He said, “People ask for so many characters to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and they ask for so many actors who they want to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but we actually have less characters in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 than we have in Guardians of the Galaxy 1, because everything is just getting too sprawling and too crazy for me in these superhero comic book movies”. This was likely a surprise for many members of the audience, as most sequels introduce multiple new characters. He continued, “I really want to get to know the characters that we know better, and yeah, we will be introducing a new character…” He also said, “It’s a very moving script. Listen, one of the main things with Guardians of the Galaxy is not to add a bunch of characters, not to make it bigger in that way but to go deeper with the characters.” Another thing that may disappoint fans is the absence of a character that was in previous drafts of the script. He said, “I had another big character in my original draft and it was just getting too busy. I took that character out. And it’s a character I like a lot and hope to work with in the future but I just didn’t have room for that person, that character.” Hit the link below for more of the interview. Are you disappointed the sequel will not have more characters? Excited for further character development? Sound off in the comments!

One day James is going to stop talking in subliminal frequencies and let slip some shit that might jeopardize his job.

This is very good news. Explore more about the main characters instead of adding a bunch of new faces, which was a major fault of AOU in my opinion.

@BobbyDrakeApproaches Sorry dude, DCMarvelFreshman already had his article up about this, so this is probably doomed for deletion.

@SauronsBANE Sadly you're right. How come I couldn't see it beforehand?

@BobbyDrakeApproaches Editors have the option of initially putting the articles they're working on in the "admin" section, which basic users like you and me can't see until the editor chooses to post it.

Basically it's their way of getting their article up first before basic users, even if they don't have time to actually make sure the article is 100% finished and ready to post.

When I used to write the occasional news article, I'd go to each and every editor's profile page beforehand (like this, for example: www.comicbookmovie.com/profiles/?u=dcmarvelfreshman) and there you can actually see what they're working on. If whatever you want to write about hasn't been posted and covered by any of them yet, then it's fair game!

@SauronsBANE Do you have any advice? Should I just delete it myself, and save the editors some time?

Damn shame about this article's inevitable deletion! :(

Lmao Gusto!

@BobbyDrakeApproaches Yeah honestly, I'd probably just go ahead and delete this if I were you. But as for advice, in the future definitely check out the profile pages for each editor the next time you find something to write about. I don't think I've ever seen an editor delete an article if a basic user genuinely got their article up first. Just make sure that the headline and the teaser and the actual format of the article itself is up to their standards. If it looks just as good as any other editor's article, it's pretty hard for them to delete it!

Plus, a Miley Cyrus pic can't hurt either =P

I understand, and it's probably best this way. I was hoping for at least Adam Warlock and Richard Rider to show up, but I have a pretty good feeling that Adam was the guy who got cut and Rider was never really on the table.

@Kyos Thanks, I appreciate the sympathy.
@Gusto Thanks, I appreciate your attempts to save the article, and also your attempt to brighten all of our days with an image of that saint.

This is actually a good thing. I rather have less characters that are more fleshed-out rather than a bunch of characters with little substance.

I hope that character wasn't Warlock. Also, I think its a good thing that there are less characters in this film; I want more from the Guardians.

I think this is actually a good thing- I prefer less characters and more characterization than more characters and less development on each one of them.

Yeah careful not to be too repetitive like with Bay in Transformers 2 adding so many characters that don't get enough screen time.

Well, my guess is Starhawk is gone, if he/she ever was. So does this mean Adam Warlock is the new character? Any chance that McConaughey, a fan favorite, might be in talks for Warlock and not any Spiderman character has recently "rumored"?

Yeah, about that.

Anyone remember how Whedon stated before the title for Avengers 2 was announced that he wanted the Avengers sequel to be smaller and more character driven?

Look how that turned out.
