GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Hits Regarding DC Boss Promoting MCU

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has hit back at user who took issue with him promoting a Marvel Studios movie while working as the boss of DC Studios. Find his response right here...

Filed Under: Vol. 3

In recent weeks, James Gunn has been spending a lot of time on social media hyping up the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 next month.

He's balancing that with his new gig as DC Studios' co-CEO, a job which sees the filmmaker taking charge of an entire slate of DCU projects (he'll also step behind the camera to direct Superman: Legacy). Believe it or not, there are some who have taken issue with Gunn promoting an MCU project, including a commenter on Instagram.

Responding to a photo of Gunn on the Guardians of the Galaxy threequel's set, this user shared, "The worst business that DC could do was to hire someone who advertises the competition...unbelievable...now can you imagine what their movies are going to be like? I think it's a disaster."

That's a perfectly reasonable reaction to the director promoting his final Marvel Studios movie, right?

Well, Gunn would later replay to that by stating, "The last thing DC would want is someone who would spend the last 12 years of his life creating a series of films, and then turn his back on the last movie he created and poured his heart and souls into, as well as his collaborators and the investors."

"I wasn't hired at DC without everyone on board being very clear and supportive up front and continuously through this process."

As well as promoting Vol. 3, Gunn has continued fielding questions about the DCU and is thought to be hard at work not only on Superman: Legacy, but Creature Commandos and Waller as well.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5.

THIS is why Regular Non Nerd/Geek fans think that we're on the SLOW side of functioning in every day LIFE. JG directed the F***ing movie! It's in his contract that he has to do Press for it. How is that difficult to understand? REGARDLESS if he's the President of DCU.

Gotta get out your mom's basement once and a while. It's called a CONTRACT. Christian Bale was freaking BATMAN for 3 movies yet he was in a MCU Thor movie MEANING he had to do Press for it REGARDLESS if he was a DCEU icon

Obviously there is a contractual obligation to promote these films - but I don't even think it is that with film makers. A director has as little interest in which company owns the intellectual property as much as there care about which production company stumps up the cash to make the movie.

It’s like saying Steven Spielberg would only work for dreamworks.

The real story here is that an important studio boss actually took the time to rebut an insignificant comment. On Instagram.

The competition talk has to stop, because at this point Marvel is so far ahead it's silly.
Also, DC only becomes competition if Marvel movies start bombing. If they both make good movies they will both make millions, no one's avoiding good Marvel movies just because DC put out a good movie

@JakeyChappers -
"Marvel is so far ahead it's silly."

Honestly, both are fricked beyond repair.

WB/DC has repeatedly damaged its reputation with poor quality films and now a slate announcement that actively damages the films they are releasing in the meantime and it's next major movie is about a sexual predator and abuser.

Disney/Marvel has repeatedly insulted its fans, damaged its reputation and released poor quality films and now has a slate announcement that nobody is actively invested in and it's previous movie featured a sexual predator and abuser.

The brands are so badly damaged that Mario, of all things, is kicking their ass.

GotG3 is currently tracking BELOW Ant-Man 3 so probably won't pass the first movie and The Marvels is expected to be a box office failure.

The Flash has a massively ballooned budget due to delays and re-shoots and nobody is interested in Blue Beetle which sadly looks like a rip-off of Shang Chi, Iron Man and the Amazing Spider-man rolled into one.

@Scarilian - "honestly both are [frick]ed beyond repair"

😂😂😂proof marvel is [frick]ed beyond repair. And by proof i mean something rooted in actul reality not like the wild ranting fanboy garbage you just spewed.

OT: First off anyone who thinks 474mil on Quantumania isn't enough is desperately wanting to believe the Marvel is failing. During peak theater attendance before covid the Antman franchise maxed out at 625mil. 474 at this point is exactly where Marvel figured this film would be. Only desperates would say otherwise

Lmao i was right once again. Quantumania was hit. Profitied between 70-100mil.

Marvel spent only 150mil on production budget. IT'S A FACT😂😂

Marvel didn't want to spend the money. Making it under their new UK production company Pym Productions III. They knew the UK was offering tax incentuves for films made entierly in the UK earning them a 40mil dollar tax rebate for filming their. PPIII reportedly spent 190mil out of their pocket. Knowing the tax rebate would cover additional cost totaling the production budget to 150mil.

Double that, add advertising AM:Q only needed 380mil to break even. It sits at 474mil ww atm.

Told you guys Marvel wasn't going to spend the money on an Antman movie after while covid has the theaters down.

Besides all that even at 200mil AM still wouldn't have failed. 474 covered ×2 budget and advertising.

Boycee - 4/17/2023, 7:37 AM
@Scarilian - Christ almighty, you pathetic reaching trolls are still grasping at straws with the laughably incoherent “he made JOKES years ago! cancel him!!!!!” cryfest.

How’s that been working out for ya? 🤣🤣🤣
Scarilian
Scarilian - 4/17/2023, 7:40 AM
@Boycee -
The monkey jizzing remark is on his website, the pedophile jokes are also. I don't care about cancelling, I think that concept is retarded, but to claim he is 'polite' when he makes such crude remarks is utterly moronic and a sign you are desperate to just praise the guy.
Boycee
Boycee - 4/17/2023, 7:49 AM
@Scarilian - LOL newsflash, mush for brains: making adult-themed jokes isn’t remotely a valid metric of a person’s level of politeness or how good a human being they are. I can very easily volunteer at a homeless shelter every single week while simultaneously making “a priest, a rabbi, and a black guy” type jokes.

I also skimmed your other wildly inept comment about “mario of all movies” doing better than recent Marvel movies which definitively proves you’re not worthy of discussing any of these topics, so go waste your time cluelessly ranting and nonsensically strawmanning elsewhere.
Scarilian
Scarilian - 4/17/2023, 7:53 AM
@Boycee -
You've no actual rebuttal here, nor justification for why you view him as 'polite' when he is quite evidently going on Twitter (A literal cesspit) picking fights with people for the sake of it and as mentioned makes crude offensive jokes repeatedly.
Boycee
Boycee - 4/17/2023, 7:59 AM
@Scarilian - LOL i’ve effortlessly and repeatedly disproved your crybaby geek nonsense with literally every single response, princess. Hence why you’ve resorted to the dime-a-dozen no cards to left to play troll reply of “errrrrrrr…..WRONG” and nothing else.

You can’t argue with inarguable facts and basic common sense.
You lost, deal with it 😙

To be completely fair, James Gunn absolutely fricked the DC universe in a lot more ways than just promoting competition. He actively discouraged people from watching any of their movies, his slate announcement was complete garbage and he has not really acknowledged the damage he's done to the DC brand.

slickrickdesigns
slickrickdesigns - 4/17/2023, 7:46 AM
I agree with Gunn… who would want someone to run their studio if they didn’t pour their heart and soul into each and every project they are responsible for and him still doing his job with marvels GOTG3 while quarterbacking the DCU projects just shows the level of professionalism and commitment he has to his work. Plus it’d be a Dick move if he didn’t promote a movie he was directing.
Let’s hope he brings some life into the DCU. I liked some of the Snyderverse but I can do without most of it.
Scarilian
Scarilian - 4/17/2023, 7:56 AM
@slickrickdesigns -
I still doubt his slate even happens, his idea of a connected universe spanning into the shows simply is not sustainable, people leave, quit or otherwise get removed from projects and it'd result in contracts spanning multiple different media formats. In addition he's damaged the films leading up to his slate by implying they do not matter and his slate is primarily yet another series of reboots and focusing on pretty much what we've already seen him do with Suicide Squad, Guardians and Peacemaker.
slickrickdesigns
slickrickdesigns - 4/17/2023, 9:39 AM
@Scarilian - I’ll still give Gun a chance till I see what he does to/with Superman.
I don’t care that he spilled the beans on the current DCEU films not having consequences in his new DCU… if he would’ve backed those films then people would’ve already started blaming him for DC movies he had no part in. My only beef is that he should fire Ezra Miller from being in any other DC film ever.

“ Gunn Hits Back At Troll Who Criticizes DC Boss Promoting MCU”

Antibody who criticizes or critiques someone online is not a troll. Josh you always uses “troll” as a default reaction. That hurts the credibility of the article and makes it read like opinion.

In addition emphasizing the word “fans” numerous times should also not be done.

This person may just be a fan. You don’t know Josh.
Is the comment silly? Well that’s based on your opinion….and opinions aren’t news.

Remove “troll” and replace “fan” with “people” or “commenters”.

That turns the article into news instead of reading like opinion filled with petty name calling.
