If you're a Micronauts fan, chances are you've heard of Bug. The character was introduced in the pages of that comic book series, but later became a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, serving on the team during the Annihilation storyline and again in 2012. However, there are a lot of complicated rights issues at play, and Hasbro actually owns Bug and the Micronauts.
Marvel Studios could potentially use some Spaceknights, but Rom and Bug, for example, are completely off-limits. Filmmaker James Gunn has previously said he'd have loved to include them in his Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but was unable to do so as Hasbro isn't willing to budge!
Now, he's taken to Twitter to reveal just how often he's tried to include Bug in his MCU movies.
"Marvel is not allowed to use Bug in films," Gun reiterates in the Tweet below. "I have tried to use him in all three movies, and was not able. I hope this settles your argument."
Paramount Pictures had started developing a Micronauts movie alongside Hasbro, but the project appears to have fallen by the wayside. Bug is a fun character, so it is a shame he's never been able to join the MCU, and we're sure Gunn had a lot of great ideas for him if he were to join the team. It's just one of those things, unfortunately, and we're not banking on anything changing down the line.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to blast into theaters on May 5, 2023.
