Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's box office performance has stirred up a great deal of conversation this weekend. While the movie had an undeniably impressive opening weekend by exceeding expectations with over $118 million, analysts have come to expect more from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What's going to be telling is how James Gunn's threequel performs over the next week, with its second weekend a key indicator of whether "superhero fatigue" really is beginning to set in.
A combination of Avengers: Endgame being such a definitive ending and the pandemic has definitely led to a decrease in attendance for MCU movies. However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still off to a strong start. It's also worth noting that most blockbusters would kill for a $100+ million debut, so the power of Marvel Studios can't be underestimated.
Now, we have some news about the movie's budget; according to Variety, the movie cost $250 million to produce and roughly $100 million to promote.
That means Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will likely need to earn $600 million - $800 million to break even, a feat that should be obtainable considering the fact it debuted with $289.3 million globally. Over the next two weeks, the movie has little in the way of competition as the likes of Fast X and The Little Mermaid are still a number of weeks away.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.
