We've already heard from Kevin Feige regarding Thanos' next appearance in the MCU, and now Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn weighs in on why the Mad Titan won't show up in his sequel despite making his debut (well, if you don't count that brief Avengers post-credits scene) in the first film.

During an interview with Collider, Gunn explains that he wanted this story to focus on the relationship between Nebula and Gamora, without the looming presence of their adoptive father.

It’s about two sisters. It’s not about the sisters and their father. It’s about two sisters and what were the sisters’ problems with each other? And, you know, some of those things were caused by being raised by the ultimate abusive father. But it really isn’t about Thanos, and frankly, I just wasn’t inspired to put him in the movie. You know, I kind of go with my gut on these things and it just wasn’t what I wanted to do. It wasn’t the most fun part of the movie last time for me and I just didn’t really wanna do it this time.

And again, the relationship with Thanos has nothing to do with it. It’s not about their relationship with Thanos. It’s about their relationship to each other, and what is that? And that was interesting to me, and I thought that was important to our story, and that was important to our characters. What happened with them in the past—there’s a lot of stuff that happened with them in the past that affects our characters presently.”

From the sounds of things, Gamora and Nebula rekindling some kind of sisterly bond (if they ever really had one in the first place) will be a pretty big part of the plot, so Thanos will almost certainly get a mention or two even if he doesn't actually appear onscreen.

You can find out what Gunn has to say about the mysterious character that was cut from the script HERE, and have a look at some cool new BTS stills below.

Filmmaking is an exhilarating experience. It's always great to see bts. Literally just saw the trailer and how a world was created. So to see these, the work that goes into it, is great.

@ComicsBornAndBred - it must be a pain in the ass to film nebula and yondu on a blue screen

....I wish they'd give Gamora a uniform that stood out a little more. It doesn't even need to show a lot of skin.

Just something more unique.

@mtwiggs - Agreed. I like the yellow around her eyes in the comics. Wish they kept that. Maybe she can add it - war paint or something.

I kinda don't like the team with Yondu and Nebula - I think they have TOO much of a personal connection to other members (Peter, Gamora) to keep pushing the "misfits" image they have been for the movie/team.

Like they can still bicker and all that but I prefer if that was because they're so unfamiliar with each other, not because they are.

It's about DAMN time that they finally show the mad titan after all these years of teasing. Thanos did not even had close to 4 min of screen time until now. Don't know how they are going to make up for that. Even now with the new development that with Infinity War it's going to be all Thanos still worries me. I would have liked it more if they would have done the Loki approach. It just feels more natural, how he became a natural component of the MCU as an anti villain that i absolutely adore. Than again it's Marvel and the Russo brothers so i give them the benefit of the doubt.
