A reboot of Doom, the 2005 stinker starring The Rock, which was based on the video game of the same name is planned. What they hope to achieve with another movie is beyond me, but Universal are moving forward with the project according to What's Playing..
Uni is said to be script scouting for a Doom movie that’ll make full advantage of contemporary cinema’s richest weapon - er, 3D.
I can't blame What's Playing for being cynical. These films are just being packaged and shat out like 3D donuts. I just can't see the point. I know the first film took some liberties with the game's premise and mythology but was it really THAT different? Guns and gore is kinda the order of the day is it not? I guess I'm just not a fan of video game adaptations in general. Obviously something like
Uncharted does have a lot of potential but not more of this. Hey, maybe I'm way off and they will hire a competent director and get something approaching a decent script together for it and it will be great fun at the very least. But who wants to take that bet?
Anyway, never fret over Universal's canning of Gullermo Del Toro's
At The Mountains Of Madness, THAT would have had a R rating don't you know? No money in it when you can't bring along the kiddies! But to make amends we are getting the big, fun, loud, and almost certainly completely neutered PG13 version of
Doom! Happy days.
