WEREWOLF BY NIGHT Director Michael Giacchino Reveals That Introducing Man-Thing Was Kevin Feige's Idea

Werewolf by Night is set to howl on to Disney+ this Friday, and director Michael Giacchino has now revealed that debuting Man-Thing in the Special Presentation was Kevin Feige's idea...

It sounds like Kevin Feige is a big Man-Thing fan!

We recently learned that the Marvel Studios boss was a big supporter of 2005's rather dreadful low-budget Man-Thing movie, and Werewolf By Night director Michael Giacchino has now revealed that Feige was the one who suggested adding the fan-favorite swamp monster to the Halloween Special in the first place.

"We had so many of those conversations as you’re in development," the composer-turned-filmmaker tells Fandom when asked about the character's inclusion. "You’re working on the story and there were multiple ideas for different things and different characters. But, the thing that made the most sense...I remember it was Kevin Feige who asked me what I thought about him. And I was like, ’What, are you kidding me? [Man-Thing] is one of my favorite comic runs in the world."

Though Giacchino admits that adding Man-Thing to the mix came with a lot of extra pressure, he relished the opportunity to introduce three beloved characters to the MCU at the same time.

"These are two of my favorite characters and I’m gonna bring them in, but now you’re gonna give me this too?’ And I’ve got to bring all of this to the table. But it was all done out of love for these things. And hopefully that comes through and hopefully you feel that. Because I do love these characters.”

Man-Thing, or "Ted," is a major highlight of the special, so we're glad Feige made this suggestion.

Marvel Comics' other big green fella first appeared in Savage Tales #1 back in 1971, and while the character is often accused of being a rip off of DC's Swamp-Thing, he actually made his debut a few months before the Earth Elemental.

Though the majority of critics are still embargoed from sharing their Werewolf By Night reviews, those in attendance for the recent Fantastic Fest screening were allowed to post their verdicts, and Werewolf By Night is currently sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with nine reviews counted.

We'll be posting our reviews tomorrow, but for now, you can find my Twitter reaction below.

Easily one of the most anticipated parts in an already interesting project.

I bought Giants Sized Man Thing off the rack back in the day, if you get my drift.

I get ya. Older Man-Thing is a unique experience. The uncombed hair, the untrimmed hanging proboscis, you can taste the age and experience in every turn. Had me hooked, begging for more of that sweet, tantalizing stuff. Newer ones feel underwhelming in comparison.

He should look as old as the swamp itself.

@ElvenKingSlayer - That's actually a good point. I wonder if there will ever be any explanation as to that connection.

@Tonic24k - I think they can get away without explaining it since Man-thing doesn't really talk.
If they ever do Beta Ray they definitely need to explain him on the building since he is the only korbonite that looks like that.

I don’t know anything about this character so it’ll be fun to find out, same for a werewolf by night

@TheWalkingCuban -

Ted Salis was a scientist dude working on a Super Soldier thingie in the Everglades for some reason. He was then betrayed by some strumpet he was banging who was pretending to be his secretary (back when having a secretary was a thing) who was secretly working for some evil organization and didn't mind using her coochie as a weapon. When Ted found out he grabbed the Secret Super Sauce, got in his Delta 88 and split out onto Tamiami Trail. Just as the bad guys were about to catch him he put the spike into his vein and emptied the Super Secret sauce into his mildly athletic body and the crashed into the swamp. Of course he got all cut up in the wreck and the Swamp Scunge reacted with the Super Secret Sauce and made him into a 8' Muck Monster with a couple of mossy dreadlocks and a nose like a walrus penus.

The upshot of the whole thing is that "whoever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch" so if you are scared of 8' Muck Monsters with a nose like a walrus penus then you are gonna get all burned up when he finally catches you. If you aren't scared of that kind of action then that's cool and he will follow you around until he gets bored and starts following someone else around.

He eventually winds up guarding the Nexus of All Realities with Howard the Duck.

Make sense?

@Tonic24k - WHAAAAAT?! I missed that! I guess I just live under a rock lol.

either way, I'm still pretty stoked about this. My comment sounded a lot more angry than I actually was. I tried to add the "lol" at the end to soften it a bit, but I still sound like a jaded turd in it.

I legit completely missed Man-thing in the trailer though somehow.
