Editorial: If Mark Ruffalo And Don Cheadle Were Cast as Bruce Banner and War Machine From The Beginning.

A summary of how different the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be if Mark Ruffalo and Don Cheadle were cast as Bruce Banner and James Rhodes in the MCU from the beginning.

Back in 2013, Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier revealed that Mark Ruffalo was his first pick to play Bruce Banner, but Marvel and Lou Ferrigno insisted on Edward Norton because they felt that he was right for the role. Most people think of him as a  less confident and handsome actor. He was planning to reprise his role in the Avengers, but he rewrote too many rewrites and was considered a control freak by Marvel Studios. So they fired him and replaced him with Mark Ruffalo. That is why fans prefer him because he is more meek and confident as Bruce Banner. Terrence Howard was  originally planned to reprise his role as James Rhodes/War Machine in Iron Man 2, but he refused to take a pay cut and Marvel had to replace him with Don Cheadle in the sequel. In Iron Man 1, Marvel paid Robert Downey Jr. half a million dollars, fearing his substance abuse history would get out of hand with the other cast members while Howard was paid 9 times more of that. However, I believe if Mark Ruffalo and Don Cheadle were cast as the characters from the beginning, we would have not had Norton rewriting scenes every day, having too many rewrites for the first "Avengers" and the Incredible Hulk would have been quite better.

Terrence Howard refused to accept that he had to be paid less than he was in the first film now that the second film had Rhodey's part shunk and they did not have to pay the actor as backup. But perhaps if Don Cheadle was James Rhodes in Iron Man 1 from the beginning and Howard was cast as Moses Magnum in a small role instead, RDJ would have been paided more than Cheadle and Howard himself.

But the film would have still been dark/serious as the MCU's tone began to change after Disney purchased  Marvel in 2009. I believe if Edward Norton and Terrence Howard were cast in different roles in the films, they would have been restricted to small roles in the films. Norton could pull off an pretty interesting Igor Drenkov, had we got to see the origin of the Hulk in the Incredible Hulk, Norton could certainly put on some Russian accent and all, but he would have probably ended up in the annals of discarded MCU villains, or characters beyond that one film. I believe Norton did a pretty decent job as Banner though, but i prefer a more meek and more confident portrayal of Bruce Banner.

It would have been very interesting, seeing Terrence Howard as Moses Magnum in Iron Man 1. Of course, Obadiah Stane still would be the main villian and Moses Magnum would have played only a small role in the film. Terrence Howard has actually done a few villain roles as in Dead Man Down, etc. So I believe if Moses Magnum was implemented in Iron Man 1 as a villain, Terrence Howard would be very interesting as the character while Don Cheadle did War Machine.

If the MCU introduced these characters, here is how they would have roles in Iron Man 1 and the Incredible Hulk.

Moses Magnum(who was a terrorist and arms dealer in the comics) would have portrayed him as a weapons liaison between Obadiah Stane and Raza in Iron Man 1, illegally aiding Stane in helping the Ten Rings get their hands on Stark manufactured weapons.

Igor Drenkov(who was a KBG agent sent to learn the secrets of the Gamma Bomb from Bruce Banner) could have been readapted for the MCU as Edward Norton's character as a scientist who helps with studying the Gamma radiation that transformed Bruce Banner into the Hulk.

To me, it would show that Norton and Howard would do much better jobs as these characters had Marvel Studios realised that the former was a problem actor and the latter refused to take a pay cut and expected a pay rise for $8 million for Iron Man 2. This would have given Ruffalo and Cheadle an opportunity to play Bruce Banner and War Machine in all 7 film appearances. Would these films have been rated much higher? Let me know what you think in the comments!

A small correction. The problem with Terrence Howard was not that he wanted more money, but rather that he refused to take a pay cut.

In IM1 Marvel was so scared of RDJ's substance abuse history that they only paid him half a million dollars. Howard was paid 9 times that. Further the script was done such that Howard could step in and do more in the movie should RDJ relapse.

So when the second IM came up Rhodey's part had been shrunk and there was no need to pay the actor as a back-up. So the role was worth less than before and TH just refused to accept that. And fwiw he was seriously overpaid in IM1 imo. YMMV.

@brodie999 - No edit is showing up as yet. Does it take time to update ?

One other thing. TH reportedly was expecting a pay raise to about 8 million for IM2. (RDJ was paid 10 million for that one.) TH's thinking seems to be; 1st one success, get nice pay raise for second one, ignore all other factors. It didn't work out to well for him.

@JDL - Well, you can also edit your articles to make the changes you wanted. I learned that when I wanted to change mine. No, it doesn't take long to update. So it's pretty much done in a few seconds.

@brodie999 - My only nitpick is that I never saw anything in all of the articles indicating a demand for a raise as opposed to an expectation that one would be forthcoming. My reading of the tea leaves was that the lowered offer came before he made any of his wishes known to Marvel.

That certainly would have been interesting and probably would have made Incredible Hulk tie in more with the larger MCU beyond the few things that have appeared like Ross and the Betty-Veronica reference.

brodie999 - 8/25/2018, 9:33 PM
@noahthegrand - Yeah, it would. It'd probably been interesting to see Ruffalo do the serious scenes as good as Norton and the original screenplay and script for the Incredible Hulk. But it still would've had "The Dark Knight"-style tone as before.
brodie999
brodie999 - 8/25/2018, 9:39 PM
@noahthegrand - It also would've made Iron Man 1 have better continuity by casting Cheadle as James Rhodes from the beginning. It was the start of the MCU after all.

@noahthegrand - If mark ruffolo was in the incredible hulk then he would have been re'cast as Edward Norton in the avengers because the movie would have made even less money.

@noahthegrand - Hey, Noah. I think it'd be cool to see Terrence Howard, Edward Norton and Josh Dallas in different roles in the MCU.

Since Moses Magnum was a terrorist and arms dealer, Howard could've done him as a weapons liaison between Obadiah Stane and Raze in Iron Man 1, helping Stane sell Stark manufactured weapons to the Ten Rings.

Igor Drenkov(a KGB agent sent to learn the secrets of the Gamma Bomb from Bruce Banner) could've been readapted for the MCU with Norton playing him as a scientist who helps with studying the radiation that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk.

While Zachary Levi played Fandral in the first Thor movie(if Marvel found a way to cast him without interrupting his schedule with Chuck, Dallas could play Donald Blake as Jane Foster's ex-boyfriend who tries to get her to rekindle their relationship, to no avril.

@noahthegrand - Hey, Noah. Mark Ruffalo would've nailed Bruce Banner's beard and brushed up hairdo just like Norton did and Cheadle would've been great at the suspicion side of James Rhodes and the "next time, baby" better than Howard. What do you think of Edward Norton as Igor Drenkov and Terrence Howard as Moses Magnum?

@brodie999 - I like the idea of them and it’s pretty interesting to imagine the different way this could have gone in my head. I definitely agree with you on Ruffalo and Cheadle.

@noahthegrand - Thanks. I created a new article about how different things would be if the MCU started using 2 post-credits scenes from the beginning by having mid-credits scenes in the first 2 Iron Man movies, the first Thor and Captain America: TFA and a post-credits scene at the end of Incredible Hulk. What do you think?

@MrMartyMarvel -Thanks for agreeing with me, guys! If Quicksilver survived the round of bullets in Age of Ultron, Civil War and Infinity War would be entirely different. He'd choose Iron Man's side, but Cap and Bucky would still get away because he wouldn't fight back against his sister Wanda in Civil War. He'd also have a rivalry with Vision over his growing relationship for Wanda. In Infinity War, he'd become more accepting of their love for each other. And Quicksilver would help the heroes hold off Thanos, but The Mad Titan would freeze the speedster with the Time Stone. Not only that, but he'd be disintegrated alongside his sister during the snap.

MrCamw1
MrCamw1 - 10/5/2018, 10:31 PM
@brodie999 - I dont think too much would change other than the original Hulk movie not being rewritten. Indint know what uor article is implying is that adding two other side characters would drastically help develop bith films. Unless im reading your article wrong.
brodie999
brodie999 - 10/5/2018, 10:40 PM
@MrCamw1 - No, it's okay. I think it would've added more unique twists on Moses Magnum and Igor Drenkov just like every other MCU character if Norton and Cheadle were cast as the characters instead of the ones they already played. Since Norton and Ruffalo were friends, they could've worked really well on the Incredible Hulk together. But still, if Marvel found out he was a problem actor sooner, they would've forced Universal to restrict him to a small role as opposed to the main role. Same with Howard by refusing to give him a pay cut. That would've helped TIH and Iron Man 1 have better continuity with the rest of the MCU films. Maybe they could've been a few minutes longer by adding those 2 side characters.
MrCamw1
MrCamw1 - 10/5/2018, 10:42 PM
@brodie999 - hmm i see what your saying. Sounds like they still would be one offs though.
brodie999
brodie999 - 10/5/2018, 10:42 PM
@MrCamw1 - And if Patty Jenkins made amends with Marvel and wrote the screenplay for Thor: The Dark World, it and TIH could've been certified fresh in the 70s just like every other MCU movie.
brodie999
brodie999 - 10/5/2018, 10:45 PM
@MrCamw1 - I agree. Yes, they would. Then we wouldn't have had all the rewrites for the first Avengers movie or TIH. If Josh Dallas ever came back to the MCU, he'd definitely play Donald Blake in a heartbeat if he was ever introduced to the MCU as a legacy character.
MrCamw1
MrCamw1 - 10/5/2018, 10:48 PM
@brodie999 - They are certfied fresh. Over 60% is fresh.
brodie999
brodie999 - 10/5/2018, 10:49 PM
@MrCamw1 - Also, I think Ruffalo could've done the serious scenes as good as Norton. Even if he was cast as Bruce Banner, the movie still would have been dark/serious. So It'd be very interesting to see him break the ice for once just like that.
brodie999
brodie999 - 10/5/2018, 10:51 PM
@MrCamw1 - Actually, they're not. Any film that's lower than 70% loses their certified fresh status. So the movies could've been at least 73% and 74%, getting saved from the 60s if all of this happened.
MrCamw1
MrCamw1 - 10/5/2018, 10:55 PM
@brodie999 - i just looked it up they both have that nice tomater in front of them and not that green rotten thing next to them. Maybe not fresh in your eyes, which is fair, but they both got ripe tomatoes next to them.
MrCamw1
MrCamw1 - 10/5/2018, 10:55 PM
@brodie999 - in regards to Rufallo i do admit id like for him to have a more serious take on hulk later on. Nothing wromg with awkward Banner but i want to see serious emotional weight from him.
