Warren Ellis made it clear very early on that he had very little say in what was happening in 'Iron Man 3' and that he had word from his friend, Pearce that it was based 'very loosely' on the work that he wrote. But what did Adi Granov think of the film? He's the other side of the 'Extremis' storyline, the individual responsible for the art. Before we get to his thoughts, it should be noted that Granov also provides conceptual art for 'Marvel Studios'.
Continuing on, Granov's first words on Iron Man 3 in a new interview with CBR was that he enjoyed the film. "I thought it was a lot of fun. It had a lighter mood than I expected, which seems to go against the popular opinion that it was darker," said Granove. He continued, "I've only seen it at the premiere though, so it's really hard to judge objectively until I see it again."
Granov then moved into the visual interpretation of the Extremis violence which visually, was a significant departure from how he illustrated the affliction in the actual comic book. "Well, I don't think it should be judged against the comic, but seen on its own merits. It took the basic idea and some of the visual elements, but made it into something different," he stated." Touching on the tone of the film overall, he acknowledged, "It was definitely lighter, in my opinion, than the idea in the comic, but larger in scale. I think the domestic terrorist angle is made more terrifying in the comic, to the extent that I am surprised we were ever allowed to do it, while in the movie it is made more appropriate for a blockbuster film." Granov knew that with 'Iron Man 3' existing as a monstrous family-oriented summer blockbuster, things would need to be changed. "Visually, the Extremis design and transformation are in the realm of horror, which obviously wouldn't work for a big action movie, so it was made more audience friendly, less scary, more dazzling," he concluded.
