IRON MAN 2: Awesome Alternate Designs For Whiplash's Mark I And Mark II Suits Have Been Revealed

Iron Man 2 hit theaters in 2010 and while it was followed by THOR and Captain America: The First Avenger, the movie's main focus was to set up The Avengers. As a result, it drew the ire of many fans as it was a very busy movie which attempted to juggle a lot of balls. It dropped some too, particularly on the "Demon in the Bottle" arc and it didn't do a particularly great job with its lead villain either.

Played by Mickey Rourke (an actor who has since disowned the sequel), Whiplash was fun to watch in action but the sequel let itself down by repeating what had come before when it put him in an Iron Monger style suit for the final act. Now, we've got our hands on some concept art which reveals alternate designs for both costumes worn by the villain and how the final versions were created.

These all look great and it's fair to say that Whiplash could have ended up looking a lot better if some of Marvel's talented concept artists had had their way just like with War Machine and Black Widow!

Iron Man 2 is okay. Just really inconsequential in my opinion.

Didn't find Whiplash entertaining at all.

The Grand Prix scene is still great, and I loved Sam Rockwell in this. I hope they bring him back... he’d probably be out of jail by now. Rich people don’t do that much time. Put him on the Thunderbolts in the Fixer’s place.

As much as I credit Favreau for making the Iron Man film great, his hesitation to wander from the mech-based premise probably would have held the MCU back had he stayed longer. I just remember all of the interviews with him seeming really reluctant to cross over the other Avengers worlds for fear that it would muck up the good thing that they had going with Iron Man, and they clearly were worried about adding magic. It’s kind of funny that now, at the end of RDJ’s run as Stark, the MCU has embraced enough variety to do any aspect of the Iron Man franchise and his rogues gallery, instead of just defaulting to another man in a robot suit.

@Chewtoy - Maybe that is why we never got a real Mandarin. He should stray into the realm of magic and be a more ethereal villain.

I loved Sam Rockwell's Hammer. BTW the marvel 1 shot where he has his little twink in jail is a scream. He should come back at some point.

Still all look pretty awful. Whiplash is one of the worst villains of the MCU. Justin Hammer should have been the main villain and Vanko should have been Crimson Dynamo.

I saw some of these right after the film was released. I would have loved a proper Crimson Dynamo.

The name (Ivan Vanko) is a combination of Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo - they could’ve at least given him a red paint job... instead of the forgettable final design we did get

IM2 was a very good flick. Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell were outstanding.

Don't notice anything new here. Who released the "new" stuff and where did it suddenly "surface"?
