Can Iron Man 2 Beat Dark Knight's Opening Record?

The Los Angeles Times reports that tracking surveys for Iron Man 2 already indicate that the movie could potentially top the $158.4 million domestic opening record of The Dark Knight

Thanks in part to Downey, the Paramount-distributed film is drawing as much (strong) interest among women over 30 as it is among women in their 20s, the tracking surveys show. Males in their teens and 20s are so keen on the film they may as well be dressing up in an iron suit. About the only people who aren't fully sold are teen girls, but there are signs of robustness there too.

I'd be surprised if it did, that's a huge opening.

Well a billion dollars is quite a tall order. I'm still surprised TDK made that much.

Marvel had the decency to release IM2 in 2D, so if it did make that much money, at least it would be well deserved.

The same can't be said about other studios who release crappy movies in 3D, just to get extra bucks from the average moviegoer (Clash, ahem).

@ supermario

hey, people don't have to see it in 3D. and there are people that enjoy it, so its not exactly stupid for studios to do it. i agree though, Clash is a perfect example of when 3D should NOT be used.

and no, i don't think IM2 will beat TDK, but i really hope it does!

You know what? I hope it does. Dark Knight is over-rated.

@BryEL - I think as a Batman movie its overrated, The Joker is the only thing that made it spectacular.

@Corn

No, it's certainly not stupid to use it, but it is a growing pain that every studio wants to make all their movies in 3D. I'll probably see IM2 twice just because it's not in 3D. lol.

I certainly don't think IM2 will reach the billion dollar mark, but I thought the same thing about TDK

Maybe if someone kills RDJ, Iron Man 2 will be phenomenal (funny how that works, huh?). Wait... probably should do that after Avengers.

I don't think so. The Dark Knight rules. Ironman is about to shoot his repulser ray on the dark Knutts though LOL.

greek, that spoof is pretty funny lol.

It might, but unlikely, I think TDK had a bit more hype surrounding it, then with Heath's unfortunate passing, it got even more hype, thus everyone and their purse dogs went to see it. Even my ex gf who doesn't even like Batman saw it with her new bf at the time. I thought that was crazy lol.

Iron Man has a lot of fans, but I don't think it has hype yet, like for example, no one at my work even knew there was an Iron Man 2 coming out, whereas, TDK, everyone at my work went to the midnight release (and they knew months in advance that the movie existed). These are just some examples of the differences of hype.

Tranformers and Batman = super ridiculous everyone hype

Iron Man and Watchmen= fan hype/geek hype (I'm one of these)

If Whiplash wasn't the villain, I'd be so much more excited about this movie, but I'm just not. I'll go see it with my family opening night and I think it'll have a lot of great moments, but I doubt it'll be epic. We'll see if Tony can prove me wrong.

Hopefully it will, I think it will too. It certainly deserves too. Everyone loves Iron Man now...I mean you need to realsie that Iron Man made a great amount considering he was a B-List superhero at the time, now everyone knows about him and they'll be pimping this film out like hell.

I'm pretty confident that IM2 will trump TDK...like it should. The only reason TDK made as much as it did was due to the fact that Heath Ledger unfortunatley died, and many were under the impression this was his last role...and it was, well...at least FULL role.

TDK is well overated. Iron Man was the better film IMO. Avengers certainly will though.

nah dark knight was the better film and @Ryden yeah right people love batman and Joker. right now Dc has much better fims than marvel right now

I think the deciding factor will be how many people go see it more than once. I saw TDK 3 different times that weekend...but IM2 does have the same amount of anticipation. We'll see!

REALLY..I DON'T think it will..It might come CLOSE..

But I will tell what WILL beat the record..

I will say it in one word...TRON!

Tron will easily take the record..not just cause of the
3D but also because of the FAN BASE..and the OLDER fans who were kids when the original came out really want to see this new one..not to mention the NEW commers to the TRON universe...I love the original TRON..and TRON..well this one was MADE for 3D..and I
don't really like 3D movies..but the 3D in TRON, was NOT
just tacked on at the end..The whole thing was shot with 3D cameras..This upcoming TRON movie is going to be
EPIC..and I for one will not miss it!

ironman 1 was great and CANT WAIT for im2 but dark knight was EPIC and every actor gave amazing performances. in my opinion its FAR from an overrated film. i could care less if it im2 beats dark knight.
Zero
Zero - 4/7/2010, 8:00 PM
Will it beat The Dark Knight's opening record? I'm kinda doubtful about that. The Dark Knight had a lot of things going for it that intrigued people to go see it (especially the IMAX-specific scenes; that's why the IMAX showings were completely sold out for weeks in my area). And I even know some people that aren't Batman fans (or even fans of any superhero) that went to see The Dark Knight because of Heath Ledger.

Iron Man 2 should be good, but I don't think it has what it takes to draw in many different viewers, whether they are fans of superhero movies or not.

It might pass TDK in the long run if it really is that good (which I don't doubt), but I doubt the opening weekend record will be broken.

OverCross - 4/7/2010, 8:55 PM
Well Dark Knight was a good money maker because it was a sequel to a good BATMAN movie.

IM2 has a very good chance because everyone else started to first know Shell Head from that first movie (and it was great) and also the new movie looks amazing so...
....might be pretty close

GO MAN! GO!

BATMAN BEGINS MADE $47 MILLION OPENING WEEKEND AND IRON MAN MADE $98 MILLION(WHICH IS STILL THE 3RD BIGGEST NON-SEQUEL OPENING)BATMAN BEGINS SEQUEL,THE DARK KNIGHT MADE $158 MILLON OPENING.
U NEVER KNOW,BUT IM HOPING IT WILL BEAT SPIDERMAN 3'S $151.3 MILLION THOUGH
Ryden
Ryden - 4/7/2010, 9:45 PM
@prinzjoker- How do you work that one out when the only film based on a character from the main DCU was Batman Begins, Superman Returns and TDK, where as Marvel has released Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and now Iron Man 2 and then Thor, Captain America and finally the Avenegrs.

I'm not saying people don't like Batman, far from it, but TDK is overated. FACT.

It was a good film...Ledger was great, Oldman was great, Eckhart was great even Gylenhaal made a good performance but everyone else sucked. Especially Bale.

Also it totally took a piss on the comics which is just ridiculous. The realism thing is just annoying, there's no need to make Batman boring.

Anyway Iron Man 2 should and hopefully will beat TDK because I can tell just from the trailer that it's going to be a much superior movie. At least Iron mans ticks close to the comics! And Robert Downey Jr is a [frick]ing God, Bale can go work on that retarded voice of his.
