Mickey Rourke Talks About Playing Whiplash in Iron Man 2

In an interview with the UK Guardian, Rourke talks about his preparation for playing the villain in "Iron Man 2"

Mickey Rourke certainly seems to be taking his role of Whiplash very seriously indeed. Here's an excerpt from an interview he did with The Guardian..

And Iron Man 2, in which he plays Tony Stark's tattooed Russian nemesis, Ivan, is possibly the biggest movie yet in Rourke's new career. For Rourke this means going to Russia, drinking vodka and visiting jails to study prison tattoos and find his character's tics. "I decided to do half my role in Russian," he beams, "and that's hard because the Russian language doesn't roll off the English-speaking tongue very easily. I spent three hours a day with a teacher, and after two weeks I know four sentences! Let me see, it's sort of like... 'Yezzamee menya... Yezzamee manya obott... Er, nemaboootty menya...'"

This goes on for quite some time. "It means," he says, finally, "If someone kills me, don't wake me up, because I'd rather be dead than live in your world."

Pretty cool eh? I think Rourke will nail the role of Whiplash, as he does in everything!

Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7, 2010.

I wonder if they plan on doing the storyline, where IRON MAN'S Armor becomes sentient and kills WHIPLASH?

I have a feeling this is going to be a good movie, however I still think whiplash is a lame villian. But I have faith.

Yeah same here thwhtknight. I was real sceptical when they mentioned that Whiplash would be the villian, but it actually sounds like theyre making him pretty cool. Still, Crimson Dynamo would have been better.

Betty - 6/7/2009, 3:12 PM
When I think about how movie makers are, They probably just didnt like the character name Crimson Dynamo. It sounds really flamboyant. I think he's going to be more Crimson Dynamo + a retractable whip but called, Whiplash.
Betty
Betty - 6/7/2009, 3:14 PM
GUNSMITH--Yeah, Gimplash. Or Crimson Gimplash, sounds better.

for some reason, i used to hate "number two's" because as a sequel, they usually live in the shadow of the orinal in a series, but.. i think rourke will make iron man 2 quite like the dark knight, lol.. which will mean movies like these totally change my feeling about sequels..
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 6/7/2009, 4:23 PM
if iron man 2 is half as good as the first film then it will still be awesome! is 'the wrestler' worth buying because I was going to get in on blu ray but bought 'my bloody valentine 3d' instead!?

The Wrestler was a great movie and Rourke did excellent. I'm not to hyped about Iron Man two because I'm guessing at the end of the day it will be just as shallow as the first one. Don't get me wrong I liked the first one it was fun and enjoyable, but it wasn't a great movie it was explosions and one liners.

Jensen Ackles rocks.

The Wrestler Sucked! Mickey did a good job in the movie though. But he's not THAT great. He is what he is but he ain't all that.
stupify_me
stupify_me - 6/7/2009, 6:20 PM
How could you say The Wrestler sucked? It was an incredibly emotional film that made you really care about the guy and what was going on in his life. Wait never mind you have a Silver Surfer icon from Fantastic Four. I understand now.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 6/7/2009, 7:07 PM
joshw24 why would you buy that movie? I'll give jensen ackles is a decent actor but the movie is one of those movies that didn't need to be remade...not because the original was awesome but because the plot was just dumb.

Anyway, I was thinking the same about the older villain thing in iron man. I think it's just because downey jr doesnt look that old which makes it seem more noticeable.

haha its kind of funny how a bunch of u are big comic book movie fans but u hate movies that r oscar nominated and r good. comic book movies r good too but u get what im saying.

also, a reasonable reason y they used whiplash as the villain and not the crimson dynamo is because the crimson dynamo is very similar in powers and looks to the iron monger in the first movie. they prob wanted to change it up a bit in type of villains
stupify_me
stupify_me - 6/7/2009, 7:51 PM
I would of agreed with you joob, but being oscar nominated doesn't auto make something good. In fact this years oscars were the worse in the last 5 years. The Wrestler was a good movie though. If you want to see the type of people who hate it though look no further than people who actually thought Fantastic Four 2 was good.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 6/7/2009, 7:59 PM
I can see why they steered away from the crimson dynamo, but still...whiplash is like the Kathy Griffith of villains. I won't even call him super villain, he about as menacing a go-bot decepticon. But maybe this movie will make him cool, who knows I'm willing to put some faith in Jon Favreau.
