IRON MAN 3 Predictably Debuts At #1 On Home Video Sales Charts

Why "predictably"? Well, despite fanboy complaints about the depiction of 'The Mandarin', the Shane Black helmed Iron Man 3 is still the #1 movie of 2013 and the highest grossing Iron Man movie of all-time. Hit the jump for further details!

Iron Man 3 - which is the first film in that franchise to be distributed on home video by Walt Disney Studios - has gone straight to #1 on the national sales charts after its first week of release in stores, taking the top spot from World War Z. With a total of over $409 million at the North American box office, Iron Man 3 is still 2013's highest grossing movie, so it should come as no surprise that people flocked to watch it again on DVD and Blu-ray. It's also clearly a movie people want to own so they can have unlimited multiple viewings, because Iron Man 3 debuted at only #2 on Home Media Magazine's rental chart! Did you buy the threequel this past week?

More proof that the term "good movie" is completely determined by sales. Our opinions are meaningless. I bought it,anyway, because sometimes I like buying movies that piss me off like X3. I just like to dissect and bitch about things that I'm passionate about sometimes. Is that TMI? >;)

BEST IRON MAN MOVIE!!!

Dinotron
Dinotron - 10/3/2013, 4:13 AM
What I don't get is why people continuously say it's a horrible movie, it just did things that many fans were upset about, but a horrible film?? Sorry if the film was that bad then those sales wouldn't be so high, so apparently people liked it.

I would had preferred a more accurate Mandarin, but I enjoyed the film, simple as that

And why is my opinion irrelevant simply because I disagree with you? There was no need for that. Fanboy logic indeed.

@McNyagano: Yes

Twilight also pulled in a bunch of fangirls because of Pattinson, Laughtner, and it's bullshit love story. The Iron Man movies have a love story, but it's not front and center like Twilight's is. Bitches love sappy love stories...

@McNyagano: The Mandarin was exciting to watch, before the Trevor outing. He was 10x more interesting than Killian. He was actually a valid threat, instead of a generic villain who was mad because Tony didn't want to talk to him ala Syndrome from the Incredibles.

I said it before and I'm saying again. The GA loved the film. My theater clapped at the end. I can't say I love the film, but I'm not saying I hate it. It's enjoyable and tolerable, and that's all I need.

Maxi91291 is not a troll but he's making a very good point.

Trevor's portrayal of the Mandarin was the typical generic terrorist who hates America. Killian is much more than a "Nerd who wants revenge" villain if you were actually paying attention in the movie.

Fanboy complaints...meh. For the most part, it's trolls that have been complaining. Most fans are fine with the villain, as well as the movie. The only bad thing I can say is that it was the only good CBM of the summer. Everything else thus far, RIPD, KA2, MoS, and Wolverine, have ranged from bad to average. 2013 won't go down as a good summer for the genre. Hopefully Thor closes the year out with a bang, but I'm not too sure myself.

@McNyagano: His current behavior is trollish, so whether he's a consistent troll or not is irrelevant. I happen to not be in the mood for acidic debates, which I indicated, but the acid didn't stop.

Back to the movie, we are talking opinions here. You have the opposite feeling that I do and that's fine. It's okay to disagree.

@Luminus So you would say that The Mandarin was like Marvel's version of Osama Bin Laden before the reveal?
marvel72
marvel72 - 10/3/2013, 4:46 AM
you can't judge a film on how good a film is from box office takings or blu-ray/dvd sales.

you can't judge a film by what film critic's say i.e rotten tomatoes, metacritic or cinescore.

how do you rate how good a film is?

personally i thought iron man 3 was good & a good start not a great start to phase 2.

it seems that the general audience doesn't give two shits about the mandarin twist or all that over the top comedy.

don't forget us comic book fans make up ten percent of the films total gross.

@PeterDarker121: Something like that. If he had the rings, that would've been the icing on the cake. I don't buy that they wouldn't make sense, when the producers turned right around and had molten, fire-breathing super people with healing factors walking around and not burning up their own clothing.

@marvel72: I judge a film by my own tastes. But Hollywood clearly judges it by numbers and that's the right decision, because numbers are unbiased. If your perfect, ground-breaking film cost $20 million and you only made $1 million back, your movie isn't a good movie in business terms regardless of what random movie snobs think.

People will tell you Blade Runner is a good movie and then they'll meet me and find out it sucks. Who's right and how are you coming to that determination? Should you impose your opinions on others, because you're passionate or do you concede to the business model and base it on numbers? Think about it.

I suspect that only The Hunger Games or The Hobbit could challenge that NA box office this year. The overall box office is lock up for IM3 though. Marvel wins again. Will Marvel pull the hat trick with a 2014 release?

@Luminus

How the hell was Trevor an actual threat?? o_O I have yet to see the Mandarin make any sort of impact in the Marvel comics universe the way Doom, Magneto and other major villains in that universe have.

I think the approach they took with the Mandarin worked perfectly because not only did Killian end up being a more than a physical threat for Tony but it added to his intellect, supposedly Tony's greatest asset, yet he was out-smarted every step of the way. This made the Mandarin so much more than a scary guy in a robe, he was a terrifying idea. The very concept of terrorism is real in general, is well, terror. He's not real, it's all all smoke and mirrors but it gives America an obvious and easy to hate villain to take to reponsibility hence why Killian said "The second you give evil a face, a Bin laden, a Kadafi, a Mandarin, you hand people a target".

The fact that it's Killian who has constructed an image that he KNOWS Americans will be able to hate and fear is quite smart. It was a way of turning something that could have been politically incorrect into something that's making a smart critique on the fear of terror culture with America. Don't judge the bearded, ring wearing Mandarin under the robes that's used to portray him, judge him on the man pulling the strings from behind the shadows.

^^Don't bother. Fact of the matter is, some trolls were waiting on something from this franchise to pick at, and now they have it. No matter how lucid or insightful your analysis may be, you may as well be talking to a wall. Most of the people who shit on the Mandarin reveal are trolls or fanboys pitching for the 'other team' so to speak. Equally ridiculous either way you cut it.

You're right, but as we've seen from the comments on here since May, these and other concepts were either irrelevant to or went over the heads of those who would have preferred to see magic rings and Malukan spaceships.

The completely derogatory use of the term "fanboy" is getting really old on this site. It's been overused for awhile now and it's annoying. We're all fans here, and yet anyone who doesn't like a certain thing is treated lesser for it. And we all get how it works - when the editorials complain about something, it's "critical analysis", but when others complain about something the writers of said editorials like, it's trolling or fanboy bitching. The hypocrisy is noted at this point.

Also getting old is the utter hostility for the so-called crime of someone not liking a film, when it is not a requirement nor should it ever be. General consensus should not mean a damn thing to inform how someone views something themselves, and yet anyone who didn't like the film is called a "fanboy" and a "troll" multiple times. That's a ridiculous and off-putting mindset and all that it's really doing is pointing out how absurd it is to call someone a troll while doing what is, by it's very definition, trolling.
