Nick Fury Jointly a Spy & Mentor In Iron Man 2

Director Jon Favreau, talks with LA Times on the presence of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury in Iron Man 2. Check It Out!

During the making of the first "Iron Man," Samuel L. Jackson was invited to film a quick scene in the role as "a tag," the name for those short snippets of film that roll after the credits. The tag ended up being the audition of a lifetime for Samuel L. Jackson, signing a nine-movie deal with Marvel Studios to make his fictional espionage the unifying crossover character as Marvel moves forward with the plan to interlock all of its superhero films.

Now, for LA Time's annual scoop, Director Jon Favreau, shares more on Nick Fury role in Iron Man 2.

"The idea was just to do this tag, and we thought it would be really fun to get Sam since the comics version of Fury is based on him," said "Iron Man" and "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau. "Now it's become much more than that. In the ["Iron Man 2"] film, he has a significant role and becomes the entry point to connect Tony Stark to the agency called S.H.E.I.L.D. and, thereby, the rest of the Marvel Universe, with Captain America, Thor, the Avengers."

In Jackson, Favreau says, Marvel has a charismatic player with a black-ops grin who can hold his own in a room full of super-powered types.

"He has tremendous presence," Favreau said. "We have a scene in the film at Randy's Donuts where Tony, after a rough night, needs a talking-to. And as Fury, Sam is a combination of sponsor and mentor and also this mysterious guy who is indoctrinating him into this order of superheroes."

There's a scene in "Iron Man 2" where Fury talks about his firsthand knowledge of Stark's father and his personal feelings about family and legacy -- does the tidbit suggest that Fury will be linking Marvel's characters through the decades with the WWII period piece "The First Avenger: Captain America" on deck in the studio's production pipeline?

"Will they say he was alive in World War II? I don't have any idea on that one. I know there's been a lot of discussion about that. There's a lot of things to be considered. There are endless possibilities and endless discussion of them."

Reading the Iron Man 2 novel, I remember the scenes Favreau referred to, and the feeling of Nick Fury's presence with Tony Stark really put things at ease after a rough night, and really in the remainder of the film. We'll all be able to see that enjoyable presence on the big screen, May 7th.

Well, I think SLJ is perfect for Fury!

However, it'll be interesting to see more of him in Iron Man 2 because hopefully it will become clear whether he's based more on the 616 or Ultimate version!

As for him turning up in WWII? I hope not. I think it's better to have Cap come into the present and not know anybody - that feeling of isolation would be an interesting story to tell in both The Avengers and future Cap movies! Plus, I think it would take up too much time having to explain how Fury was alive in WWII and a lot of non-comic book readers might find the whole thing a bit too far fetched!

Mike @ I don't think it is that big a deal. We're talking about a guy who has taken an anti-aging serum (making him over 100 years old), is leading a crazy-assed outfit of 'commandos' who never really existed and goes on 60 years later to form a superhero squad called the Avengers!

What historical innacuracies are you exactly worried about?? Being a black soldier leading a white unit seems to be the least of problems.

Also from what I understand the Invaders aren't gonna be much more than a 'morale boosting circus show for the troops' who decide to go into action against the orders of their superiors. And the 'howling commandos' are some troops who show up to represent the 'special forces' side of WWII troops. So I'm not worried of super-hero over kill on this film...well not yet anyway.

Hmmm... Would or should Fury be alive and kickin' nazis in WW2??? That's a tough question... But what if "Nick Fury" isn't his real name? What if this certain african american gentleman's name is actually... Isaiah Bradley??? What if the prototype of the syrum he took to fight in the trenches is what's been keeping his aging process dormant? What if he uses the "Nick Fury" alias to cover up any and all info on what actually happened to him in WW2, being a guinea pig for the army in an age where racism was all the rage? It would make some sense.

Some of you guys just need to read or watch Ultimate Avengers. All this speculation about will Fury be in WWII is ridiculous. Where are you guys getting this from?
Kevin Feige and Mark Millar (who wrote the Ultimates) are both on record saying the story line will follow the Ultimate Avengers. If you are familiar with the story, you can see all the threads coming together in all the movies they have made and are making.
Fury will be present day. His role in Cap will be leading SHIELD's mission looking for Cap in the beginning and finding him frozen in ice at the end. My guess is that they will tell Cap's origin story as a flashback (ala Titanic style)to fill in the gaps as to who they are looking for and why.

During WW2, over 2.5 million African-American men registered for the draft, and black women also volunteered in large numbers. While serving in the Army, Army Air Forces, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, they experienced discrimination and segregation but met the challenge and persevered. They served their country with distinction, made valuable contributions to the war effort, and earned high praises and commendations for their struggles and sacrifices.

Regarding a black officer leading troops, Brig. Gen. Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., the first African-American general in the U.S. Army,During World War II, Davis was commander of the 332nd Fighter Group, which escorted bombers on air combat missions over Europe.

So, as we can see, having a black Nick Fury during WW2 is not far-fetched at all.

Priest @ Yes it is, because he wasn't [frick]ing African American to begin with!!!

Hell he had HAIR too! : D

I blame that [frick]ing ULTIMATE UNIVERSE for all the bits of sh1T were getting in the MARVEL movies, anyhow IRON MAN 2 will still be EPIC, just not as EPIC as it should be!

: P

Thank [frick] we ain't getting ULTIMATE THOR in the AVENGERS!!! Whew,...

Lee, we all know you hate the ultimates...but can you please let it go? Why does it matters so much to you? SLJ is a great actor and he portrays a great Nick Fury. So what if he is black?
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 4/26/2010, 8:10 AM
Priest @ Got nothing to do with him being black, is ULTIMATE THOR black??

I say yee nay! : P

Wait till you get your ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN and everyone starts moaning! : D

I care because cbm's should be quality, by the way SLJ in nearly every role is SLJ lol!

He's an okay actor, but he was awesome in "UNBREAKABLE" i'll give him that!

P.S. Just hope the IRON MAN armor looks sweet and not too CGI'ed!

lmfao it's hard to see a black fury in ww2? it's not realistic because a black man in ww2 is not realistic. lol, but a super soldier is ok. racism at it's best, i am sure i will get heat for that but i am calling it like i see it. at first i was upset because they did not use the original, classic nick fury, but who cares. as long as they use fury correctly, no matter if it's 616 fury or ultimate fury.

Hmmm.... I'm starting to see a pattern here.

LEEE admits to hating SLJ for fury because he has no hair, and yet LEEE himself picked Bruce Willis, who also has no hair. This can onl lead to one assumption...

LEEE777 is going bald!!! And he hates the fact that SLJ can make the bald look work for him, and he himself can't!

And Goofy is Osama Bin Laden in disguise!!!

They should have a white version in WWII but when he takes the serum to age slower a side effect is he becomes black. That would tie everything together hahaha.

If i member correctly I think when Cap became defrosted he thought that everyone around him was a bad guy because Fury was Black and back in 1945 Black Americans weren't often if at all in charge. He didn't know how long he was frozen just kinda awoke and ready to kick nazi ass.

High ranking military officers were definitely few and far between during the 1930's but by no means non existent.

My father and uncle were both decorated soldiers in the Air Force during WWII. So it is definitely possible.

I'm down for Nick Fury being an exceptional soldier in WWII, or even the Isaiah Bradley spin.

For all you ultimate haters out there, answer me this: Which story works better for the Avengers movie and everything leading up to it?
A. Classic version- "Oh no! We should all stop the Hulk! Hey look we all happen to be here together! Oh crap! It's Loki! Glad that's taken care of. Let's form a team."
B. Ultimate version- SHIELD recruits various superheroes to form the Avengers
Now, in no way am I saying Ultimates are better than the real Avengers, however, you have to admit, the story works better as a basis for movies. Anyway, while ultimate marvel makes a point of being different, part of its purpose is sort of to tell a modern day version of the earlier days of the modern universe. Time goes on. Peter Parker isn't in high school anymore. If you want to see the young Spider-man told in a modern style, Ultimate Spider-man is the $H!T.
Anyway, it's not like they're making the whole movie-verse ultimate. They're just taking some elements, so chill.

@Smolo

wrong the reason why Cap thought that everyone was bad guys was not because Nick Fury is black its because he was asleep for so many years dreaming about the WWII. he had abit of Post Traumatic Stress plus he wake up in a different place.

Actually, General Davis did commanded white troops. Those of the 33rd Fighter Group, Tactical Air Force. On the troop transport ship to Africa, Davis was placed in charge of all the troops on the ship. Since the ship also had white troops, this was the first time an African-American officer had commanded white soldiers. And it occurred during WW2.

Dont know why everyone is having a problem with Sam as Fury in WWII. There was a black member of the original Howling Commandos. SO its not far fetched.
