Mark Strong Comments On JOHN CARTER's Fan Response And The Chances Of A Sequel

The actor shares his thoughts on the mixed response from fans and critics to John Carter and also reveals what it was that first drew him to the project and whether he'll be back for a sequel.

Despite performing slightly better than originally predicted, it is currently unlikely that we will ever see a sequel to John Carter. Disney has already revealed that they are expecting a loss of $100 million and it's hard to imagine the studio ever making enough from the film to warrant them greenlighting a follow up. Regardless, the mixed response has done nothing to deter star Mark Strong who had this to say at yesterday's Jameson Empire Awards while talking to Red Carpet News.

On The Mixed Response To John Carter:

"Well, it's mixed isn't it? Some people really liked it, some people really hated it. But that seems to me to be most films are like that. The Guard was the same. Everybody loved it, everybody hated it. Tinker Tailor, you know. A lot of people love it, a lot of people it's not their cup of tea."

On What It Was About The Project Which First Appealed To Him:

"I think Andrew Stanton is a genius. He's an amazing storyteller, having made Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Wall-E. The artwork was incredible and the kind of epic story was amazing. All the boxes were ticked for me on that one."

On Whether We Will See A Sequel:

"I don't know to be honest. I have no idea."

Just saw John Carter on the Weekend. I actually thought it was pretty good. I think biggest reason it bombed was the poor marketing and choice of title. Most people I have spoken to have no idea who John Carter is. The title tells you nothing about the movie

This was such a good movie. I took my 8yo son to see it and we both loved it. The action was on par with Avatar but I liked the story much better.

Special effects were done amazingly well and Lynn Collins was SMOKING HOT in this movie. She has an amazing body and show shows off most of it.

I would rate this a 4 out of 5. I recommend everyone check it out.

blackbeltnidan - I couldn't agree more. Marketing could have been much better. I read in one article that Disney removed "Mars" from the title because "Mars needs Moms" did poorly. I'd say the smart guy in the room made a mistake on that one.

However I am also surprised how many people I talk to that don't even know there was a book. They don't even know the author until I say, "Tarzan?... ever hear of it?"

The other good thing I heard was that one movie exec said he didn't know who they were trying to target. Marvel has done a good job but I personally don't think every movie needs to be an "R" rating but the movie did seem like they were trying to make it for no single audiance

John Carter didn't need a star in the lead, Taylor Kitsch did perfectly well in the role. The movie was fantastic from start to finish, real classic entertainment in the Flash Gordon mold that Star Wars tried to replicate. There is no measurement to how fraking HOT Lynn Collins was in this movie, I'd watch it ten times in a day just for her alone!

Its unbelievable that the scifi community of fanboys didn't rally behind this movie, its so bloody good and most of the idiots sat on the fence hoping it will fail so they could gloat, fools! Last hope for this movie is the Japan release in a few weeks, at least its doing decent box office internationally, only the USA is killing its own baby!

John Carter flunks out, yet the FAR INFERIOR Hunger Games kicks ass at the box office (not knocking the book, it was great, but the movie was totally underwhelming despite some good performances)... WHY did Disney not push the "from the creator of Tarzan" and "from the Director of Finding Nemo, Wall-E, etc." angles???.... or "before there was STAR WARS, there was JOHN CARTER, WARLORD OF MARS!" I'm really pissed that we'll never see a sequel for this.

I think the movie just suffered from poor marketing..great movie! I enjoyed it far more than any of the Star Wars prequels. @Avengingson I agree, Hunger Games was quite underwhelming and I was grazy about the characters wardrobes and makes up. Imo Hunger Games looked liked a cheap Scifi Channel movie in some parts. I don't understand the apeal. John Carter should absolutely get a sequel.
