Deadline reports that Walt Disney Studios are in something of a panic after early tracking results have shown that
John Carter may fail to live up to anywhere near their expectations. A senior exec from a rival studio told the site that the tracking is,
"Not good. 2 unaided, 53 aware, 27 definitely interested, 3 first choice." Another added,
"It just came out. Women of all ages have flat out rejected the film. The tracking for John Carter is shocking for a film that cost over $250 million. This could be the biggest writeoff of all time."
While results such as these were always expected due to a lack of awareness in regards to the source material, Disney are still extremely worried and may be looking at losses in the $100 million range. They are expected to counter this with a big promotional campaign, although the recent Super Bowl spot HAS raised interest among regular audiences.
Cowboys & Aliens is another movie which failed due to a lack of awareness despite a big push in advertising before release. The fact that
The Hunger Games is out two weeks later also has Disney fretting, despite one insider explaining,
"We’re not running away from the movie. Our job is to sell it."
