Josh Brolin Comes Clean About Working On Jonah Hex!

The actor has revealed how he really feels about the commercial and critical failure and although he tries his best, it's clear he didn't enjoy it any more than we did...

The movie was released on June 18th earlier this year in the US to poor reviews and quickly became a box office flop. Produced by Warner Bros, the movie deviated from the source material, by allowing Hex the ability to resurrect the dead temporarily, a skill never demonstrated in other versions of the character much to the chagrin of fans. Here, the actor who played Hex reveals his true feelings about working on the movie and talks about how it all went wrong.

"Now that I don't have to promote it? No," Brolin said when asked if he was proud of the movie.

"We had an original intention and that got away from us a little bit. Everybody did do their best to try and create the best movie with what we had, but I think it got so derailed at a certain point that the assemblage of what we could use was so disconnected to what our original intention was that it just got mixed up."

"That's what I told the marketing people at Warner Bros. I said, 'I can't lie about this, so I have to look for a truism that I can go with. I do think that if you go in there kind of like with 'Piranha 3-D' — when you go to see that movie you go, 'This is ridiculous and this is fun' — so if you went into 'Jonah Hex' with that, I think you had a good time."

Where's the CBM member that tried to defend this movie to me when i was bashing on it before it came out? Implying that i wasn't a true Jonah Hex fan for say it looked like a cross between "Constantine" and "Wild Wild West".

Just wanted to say, told ya so. :P

Thomas Jane woulda been much better plus Megan Fox was totally a nuisance. She was there and practically did nothing but try to look cute.

Credit to Brolin for being straight up. Would have loved Thomas Jane as Hex. He actually liked the character before the film was in the works as well!

This is what i dont get about hollyweird. Why would you deviate from the original source? Obviously if something was already popular in its originality then that will transfer in the movie right? #fail These people in holly wood are not creative so why they think they have the right/mental capacity to change someone's original work is beyond me. Bunch of sick[frick]s!

Jonah Hex should of been a r-rated western movie like "3:10 to Yuma".

why the hell Warner Bros hire a Jimmy Hayward the first place and also why they even have Akiva Goldsman as producer that guy messed up The Losers also.

@Dynamo

yeah it did look like a cross between "Constantine" and "Wild Wild West". but both of them movies was 10 times better then this god awful JOnah Hex movie.

I for one am glad Tom Jane wasn't in this piece of shit (and so is he). He was great in the awesome Jonah Hex animated short, so it's all good.

The movie has only just come out here in the UK and I've not yet seen it or read any of the comic books so cant really comment in that respect. However, from the trailer and clips I've seen as well as the reviews, I can promise you that I'll end up buying this on blu-ray in about 6 months when it's on Amazon for less than a tenner! :P

ComicBookMovie: You know, I'd never really thought of it that way but you're completely right. Out of all these movies, only a handful have really been any good! Damn, that's a depressing thought! Hopefully the likes of Captain America, Thor, Cowboys & Aliens and Green Lantern next year will start tipping things in our favour wiping away the likes of Elektra and Fantastic Four in the process!

At least he was honest about it, I respect that. Maybe when Hex hits DVD I'll check it out, call it a car accident curiosity,lol.

I posted two different interviews with Brolin on hex before the film came out. It was pretty damn clear in the first one what he thought about the movie. He must have talked with the studio execs before the second one because his tune changed drastically.

Josh & Galactus: I don't know about that percentage. I would guess it's closer to 50/50. I think there's a pretty damn enjoyable movie for almost every bad one out there. I may have to take a poll on that subject.

yeah screw them... it was the same guys who done Crank wrote this movie Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor they going to direct Ghostrider sequel

@Hawksblueyes

well his tone changed cause before he had to promote the movie since now they aint going to do a sequel he can tell the truth about the movie.

yeah thomas jane should consider himself lucky they went with brolin instead. jane wouldnt have been able to save this and it would have been a huge black spot on his career.

The film didn't suck because it deviated from the source, it sucked because it was shit! I could have swallowed the resurrection thing no problem if they movie was up to scratch. Brolin was good though. Shame.
selinakyle

You dont think deviating from the source was a contributing factor?
Hawksblueyes

MarkCassidy - 9/9/2010, 11:46 AM
@Mskyle..Not really. But how would we know? Put it this way, if they did follow closer to the source and dropped that silly speaking to the dead thing, would the movie have been any better? Nope.

My main problem is that a lot of the directors when it comes to CBM's are getting the tones of the movies wrong.

Goddamit Josh Brolin would have been perfect Jonah Hex! Its f*cking sad that they screw it up! If there would have been someone like Robert Rodriguez or David Croenenberg in the directors chair and someone amazing writing the script it could have been f*cking great! They should have skip the supernatural elements and stay in the western! Taking elements from movies like Once Upon A Time in West, Unforgiven, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.

With any CBM, studios have to atleast give the creators or creative teams that work on the characters some input. Studios have to learn that sticking to canon is good. Granted, some minor changes have to be made when dealing with live action but they never do enough research into what makes the character popular. When you reject what was created and you force your ideas to the forefront you get failure at the box office. Superman Returns is the perfect example. If anything Jonah Hex would have made a pretty good TV series. His story can't be told in an hour and twenty minute movie. The executives at Warner Bros. never attend Comic Con and hold panel discussions with just the fans. They would definitely get an earful. We love the characters, their stories that's what keeps us buying the books... but when studios blatantly disregard the fan they run the risk of dying a harsh financial death.

Too true, Galactus. How else can you explain why i'm so much a fan of Stallone's Dredd film yet i can't stand Wolverine LMAO :P

Mars- Megan Fox is like a piece of shit. Hot yet stinky. She makes every project she's on spiral down the drain.

I love actors that are honest about the crappy movies they have done. Only comic book fan Directors should be comic book movie directors. PERIOD!!!! They should be quizzed on their knowledge about comic books and the lore. No director that touched a comic book once , maybe twice in their childhood counts as being a comic book fan. Only the passionate ones about comics should be allowed to direct these movies. Otherwise it will bomb, big time and most important of all it will upset us as comic book and movie fans. ONLY DIRECTORS THAT HAVE AN EYE FOR ART SHOULD DIRECT THE MOVIES WE LOVE.

I haven't seen the movie so when I do I'll take Brolin's advice.
I love the comic book though so it'll be hard for me to disconnect from that.

your so right the problem is nowadays Western movies dont gross alot of money like before so these studio think if they change the style it would make money and look what happen to Jonah Hex lol.

HAWKS/ComicBookMovie: I enjoy seeing any of my favourite characters come to life on either the big or small screen and even with the worst CBM's I can at least find a few redeeming features. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was a bad movie but there was still some great scenes while Silver Surfer was portrayed very well. Despite stuff like that, I too only have a handful of movies which I couldnt complain about...well, apart from the odd minor thing of course!

I mean, The Dark Knight was without a doubt one of the best films I've ever seen, but in terms of how faithful it was to the characters seen in comics each month I know that a lot of people didnt like it. On the other hand, that's why I'm so pissed off about X-Men: First Class. I'm sure it'll be a great movie but the fact it deviates so much from the comics is just too much for me. I guess it varies for everyone but on the whole we've been treated badly by Hollywood with these adaptations IMO.

However, I have a feeling that we'll have a lot less to complain about over the course of 2011 and 2012! :) Thank God for Marvel Studios is all I can say...

"come on it a western who the heck is interested in that it probably would have failed even if it was good lol "

Unforgiven, The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, 3;10 to Yuma, Quick And The Dead..and they are just the modern ones. All made decent cash and were critically successful too..well, Quick And The Dead is a stretch there I guess..
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 9/9/2010, 12:43 PM
Galactus & Josh: Good points. I hate to admit it but there are more than a few CBM's at the absolute bottom of everyone's list that I have watched multiple times because of a scene or two that I think is cool (even though the movie is horrible).

Ror: Kick ass westerns are hard to beat. Off subject (sort of) just how many times can any self respecting grown man watch "The Outlaw Josie Whales"? I think I'm on about 987 if you count catching parts of it here and there. =D

@RorMachine

they are great movies but they dont make major money expect Unforgiven.

- The Assassination Of Jesse James only gross $15 million on a budget of $30 million.
-3:10 to Yuma budget $55 million only made gross $70 million.

watch this review give u good info about why this movie fail
