BOX OFFICE: Analysts Not Predicting A Big Weekend In North America For DREDD

Sadly, it looks like Lionsgate's unimpressive marketing campaign and some stiff competition from a bunch of other releases will mean that DREDD struggles to hit the double digits at the North American box office this weekend. Read on for details!

It's going to be a busy weekend at the North American box office and that unfortunately means that DREDD probably won't perform as well as fans hoping for a sequel would like. It faces stiff competition from End of Watch, House At The End Of The Street, The Master, Trouble With the Curve, and last week's holdovers Resident Evil: Retribution and Finding Nemo 3D. This means that despite opening at 2,506 locations (2,200 of which are 3D) it will likely finish in the high single digits, although good word of mouth could ensure that it reaches $10+ million. The advertising campaign for DREDD has been poor as it essentially ended after the film was released in the UK two weeks ago. With so many other choices on offer, Lionsgate should have been doing everything possible to make sure that the 2000AD adaptation was the #1 choice for moviegoers. Read my review by clicking HERE.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

STARRING:

Karl Urban as Judge Dredd
Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson
Lena Headey as Madeline Madrigal
Domhnall Gleeson as Travis Synders
Langley Kirkwood as Judge Lex
Francis Chouler as Judge Guthrie
Deobia Oparei as Judge T.J. Alvarez

RELEASE DATE: September 7th, 2012 (UK) September 21st, 2012 (US)

I have to agree with Gambit89. I don't think it has much to do with the marketing campaign or competition. It is a very niche' film for a select group of comic fans and main stream public isn't going to be that interested. At least with the first one you had a name draw in Stallone to appeal to Joe Q. Public.

i didn't think judge dredd comic's were that popular in america in the first place.so i didn't expect it to do as well there like it did in the rest of europe, especially when you have to compete with spider-man & batman.

After talking to a chair, Eastwood is no longer a threat this weekend, however the OTHER Amy Adams movie coming out this week will turn out in the top 3: THE MASTER.

I've seen ads for this consistently for the past 3-4 weeks, no idea what you're talking about.

I think DREDD has had plenty of adds, the trailer was less than impressive in my opinion though. I'm not a huge DREDD fan and there really wasn't anything in the trailer that made me want to become one.

and please let Grif say what he wants, the guy never says anything bad about other users and you know he's not trolling cause he would have stopped many years ago if he was. Grif is a part of what makes this site great.

Nothing against him, but a non-comic-book-fan friend of mine thought that this was a remake of the Stallone movie, of which he didn't even know was based on a comic book. To me, that's indicative of the general pop & what they might perceive this movie to be. I wanna see it, but I'm not gonna go rushing out the door.

Also, the box office has been generally shit. It's like everyone spent their money on Avengers & Batman & blew their wad!

Well it will get tickets from people who knows about movies and not all will see Dredd rather then End of Watch(i saw the trailer in Avengers and TDKR friday premier) by that it has ALOT of people in the back. Dredd also is not popular the trailer looks dumb people say its REALLY good different from trailer. Eastwood lost popularity :( after appearing for (Racist and ALOT other things i cant say here) Mitt Romney, people got really mad. My prediction its End of Watch (30-40) Dredd (15-20)TROUBLE with the curve i dont know, i hope nothing

Dredd is the CBM dark horse of the year regardless of the box office numbers it pulls. Makes TDKR look like the Power Rangers.
