DREDD 3D Producer: Sequel Unlikely, Short Film in the Works

Adi Shankar, producer of Dredd 3D and the short film Punisher: #DirtyLaundry, conducted an Ask Me Anything on Reddit on 20 March 2013. He discussed Dredd and confirmed that while there would likely be no sequel, he was working on a Dredd short film in the same spirit as Punisher: #DirtyLaundry.

Speaking with Reddit users on the AMA (Ask Me Anything) board on 20 March 2013, producer Adi Shankar, whose credits include Dredd 3D, the short film Punisher: #DirtyLaundry, Killing Them Softly, and The Grey, answered questions as to whether Dredd 3D would spawn a full-length sequel. His statements varied as to whether the sequel is fully, 100% dead in the water, but it appears the prospect is highly unlikely at best. At one juncture, Shankar stated that there would "probably not" be a sequel. Shankar elaborated, explaining that because the movie "totally bombed" and R-rated movies are difficult to sell to begin with, creating a sequel would be tough. Later in the chat, Shankar seemed to fully commit to there being no sequel: in response to yet another fan's plea for a sequel, Shankar explicitly stated that it was "[n]ot going to happen =(". At yet another part of the Q & A, Shankar stated that even though a sequel would be enjoyable, it is "highly unlikely". He did, however, express a growing interest in Kickstarter as the discussion with Reddit users progressed.

Despite the somber news for fans of the ultra-violent film, Shankar also mentioned that he is working on a Judge Dredd short film. He did not clearly state that this short film would serve as a sequel to Dredd 3D and he did not answer a question as to whether Karl Urban would reprise his role as Mega City One's enforcer.

Thus, it appears that we very likely will not see a full-length sequel to Dredd 3D. However, a Dredd short film may serve to satisfy the character's fans. What do you think? Are you disappointed that there very likely will not be a full-length sequel to Dredd 3D?

I mean, if Veronica Mars raised more than three millions dollars, Dredd could probably make five or even ten, which is obviously not quite enough, but then again you could ask some studios to fund the rest, and there you go.

Dredd has a massive fan-base right now, before the premiere no one gave shit, yeah, but, like, A LOT of people will go to see the sequel, it won't bomb for sure.

What I think should happen:

Alex Garland is making his own sci-fi movie right now. If it gains a lot of cash, producers could fund the sequel to Dredd with the help of Kickstarter, Garland will write it and, hell, maybe even direct, he is a very talented guy, Karl Urban will reprise his BADASS-MY-GOD-AWESOME role, Olivia Thirlby will return...

THIS COULD AND SHOULD HAPPEN.

Comic fans and action fans are it's only calling, it would make more than the last one but it would still bomb.

And, I mean, Hollywood, for real, always whining about not having any new franchises and shit? THIS IS YOUR FRANCHISE, just [frick]ing promote this, make everyone aware of this movie, extend the [frick]ing fan-base.

Studios must make the first move towards R, I'm tired of PG-13 bullshit, I mean, everyone is tired of it, right? We could have so more interesting, amazing R-rated stories, even movies about Deadpool, Daredevil, proper movie about Batman (I like what Christopher did with PG-13, but there is more what directors can do with this setting and characters)...

Superheroes movies would finally stop trying to appeal to teens, got much more deeper and multi-dimensional. Just look at the [frick]ing Watchmen. Best superhero movie ever. With the bunch of talented people like Snyder, Garland, Rodriguez, Carnahan and R we could make this genre really GREAT, like, you know, a [frick]ing Renaissance... Comicbook movies are alright now, but they are just alright. Can't wait for R-rated Golden Age to come in.

How have the DVD/Bluray sales for DREDD been?

I wonder if a DTV sequel would be more feasible than theatrical sequel....

Studios just have no idea about marketing to blood thirsty adult males... so they didn't and no one knew it was even released before it had ended its run... dicks.

I made a Facebook page to try and get a DREDD SEQUEL or just get some buzz on the first film and get a better chance of a sequel.

Very disappointed, this movie was a work of ART, its a shame it bombed at the box office but lets face it 2000ad as a comic has always been the best and has NEVER been mainstream,so its always had an elite following .. not your average normal square will read this comic - to much thrill power and lack of understanding and appreciation of quality ART ... To the guys that worked on this movie... YOU WERE ALL BRILLIANT and have the utmost of respect in what you have achieved... BRITAIN AT IT BEST !!!
