“It would be a dream to be able to play Anderson again because I really am quite fond of her.”

Crave Online's Fred Topel caught up with Olivia Thirlby while she was promoting her new movie, Being Flynn.

Thirlby who was last seen in the critical and financial flop, Darkest Hour this time has high hopes for her next film, Dredd. She'll be playing the role of Judge Anderson. A rookie judge that is learning the ropes from the legend, Judge Dredd. In the comics she has psychic abilities, a sassy attitude, and is quick with the one-liners. In the film version she'll be just as cool, and have plenty of asses to kick.

“I do, I kick major butt in Dredd. I get to kill people. I break a guy’s neck by roundhouse kicking him in the face. It was me, I did it. I learned how to roundhouse kick. I also do it with my hands cuffed behind my back so it’s pretty cool I have to say. Yeah, leather body suit, blonde hair, the whole thing.”

“The character that Alex Garland wrote was just amazing. Probably the best action related script that I’ve read because it was really about the characters, really about this girl going through something intense. He wrote and was a very, very big part of it.”

Set photos have shown the Judge without a helmet, and when asked she at first says no, but tightens up as though realizing to say anything more would spoil something.

“No, actually. The helmet, you know what, I’m not going to say anything.”

As for the film, Olivia has seen a good portion. She was able to view it during a lot of ADR (Additional Dialogue Recording) sessions.

"I’ve gotten to see a good portion of the film and I’m very happy with it. I’m very excited to see the final cut.”

She was also asked about the rumors from October, when the L.A. Times reported that director Pete Travis had been removed from post production duties. And screenwriter Alex Garland would take over the editing process. A few days later Alex and Pete put out a joint message explaining that their unorthodox arrangement was planned from the start.

Thirlby denied the rumors, and confirmed that Pete is still very much on board. She assures that his original vision is still making it through the editing process. She also added, "Any filmmaking, any film is a collaborative process. There’s always a lot of people working on things together. The whole filming process was wonderful and I think everything’s going really well.”

Hollywood Outbreak has an audio interview with the actress. A lot of what is said is regurgitated information, but it is worth a listen.

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Dredd stars Karl Urban (Star Trek), Olivia Thirlby (Juno) and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones). The film opens in 3D September 21st.
