From Urban on the chances of returning as Judge Dredd

Yeah, absolutely. But you know I just want to say if you know this film is a one-off cult classic, than I'm cool with that because I'm really proud of the film. And we showed it the other night and the audience loved it. And to me that's like, I'm happy. I'm good. If we don't end making more of these, than I'm cool with that because it's all good on my end. If we're fortunate enough if it blows up at the box office, then absolutely I would definitely love to come back and reprise the role and make more of these. I just think there's so much fertile ground to explore within the character and within the world. And I would love to see the continuing story and the evolution of these characters and the relationship between Anderson and Dredd. And it would be interesting to find out more about the world, more about Dredd. It would be really cool to see the Dark Judges. There's so much. And it would be great to – we've seen one aspect, one sector of Mega-City One. It would be great to see other aspects.

Dredd stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey and is directed by Pete Travis. The film is set to hit theaters September 21st.

Love you Karl, one of my favorite "hey its that guy!" actors...but Judge Dredd is a stupid concept

@BattlinMurdock: Except that we know Urban IS a fan of Dredd. Just because that's what they all say (even if, you know, they don't) doesn't mean all of them are lying.

So cynical for one so young. Turn to the Dark Side you will.

Urban definitely IS a fan of Dredd, he's a kiwi and over here 2000ad was available at the local dairy (Cornerstore) and is a very popular comic amongst kiwi kids. He's not talking out of his arse.

@Pathogen: You might find it stupid, but that doesn't mean it is. Stupid concepts tend not to last over 35 years at a consistent high level of popularity unless quite a lot of people think it isn't stupid at all.

I know. Other points of view. Difficult to grasp isn't it?

Now you´re just talking rubbish, it´s been known for a long while that Urban is a fan of Dreed, it´s not our fault that you´ve been living under a rock.

>may apply to the character over in the UK, but here in the States, the general public has next to no idea who he is.

"And just to further the point, when did I ever say Urban was insincere? People need to learn how to read and/or interpret comments on the Internet."

Or maybe you should know something about the subject, before talking shit.

@BattlinMurdock
The problem here was that he never said that it was popular in the U.S.A and seeing how it´s a british comic, the obvious way to interpret it would be that it´s pretty popular in british soil.

For some one bitching about other people not interpreting what they say you seem to be the worst.

@battlinmurdoch - Dredd is not only popular in Britain. It is distributed in most commonwealth countries. and not just the States is important when it comes to box office.

um, i'm from the us, and i read dredd even as a kid 30 years ago. and ABC warriors, and robo-hunter. no, i'm not saying that's typical, but i AM saying that some of us do exist. if it's any good i'll go twice and drag people along.

New IPs do well all the time, and there is at least some recognition of the Dredd character in the public consciousness.
and at a $45m budget, it doesn't need to make much money to be a success, most people consider watchmen (another R Rated comic book movie that the general public weren't hugely aware of) and if this movie does as well as Watchmen did, on about 1/3 of the budget, I think that will be a fine success.
also Watchmen did amazingly (around half it's final takings) on it's first weekend and then it's income trailed off quickly due to bad word of mouth, if Dredd gets good word of mouth it will do better, and the fact that it doesn't look like it's cerebral, people will watch it as a popcorn flick, which is another reason it may do well.

The main concern is the trailer doesn't depict any sci-fi interior locations. IT LOOKS CRAZY CHEAP. The slo-mo lab scene looks okay but that's one scene out of an entire film.

There was zero desire/imagination/talent to make the interiors look remotely Mega-City 1 sci-fi looking. I accept the budget is small but if the Judge Minty fan film can create a sci-fi look why can't this film? It's like they found some tatty locations in South Africa and said "this will do, who cares if it looks crappy, we'll just say Peach Trees is a slum!" Such a cynical approach.

Can anyone see any interior locations that actually look sci-fi? Dirty orange walls, crumbling concrete, isn't my idea of how MC-1 blocks look! I'm amazed this film cost 45 million dollars. Looks more like a tv pilot with a few digital composite shots of the city blocks.

You have Judge Minty. What's your problem? That fan-film looks great btw - for a fan film. All it does prove though is that things do look a bit ridiculous when you translate too literally from the page. I know you think it looks 'awesome', but I think it looks way too stylised and exaggerated in live-action to be remotely practical.

I don't want YOUR ideas about how MC1 should look either btw. Your ideas suck balls. They're also completely moot. They didn't make your script, they didn't want your script, your script sucked. Get over it.

You can't stop it, you can't make everyone else hate it. You can hope it's shit, you can pray it fails in the hope that no Dredd movie will ever be made again, but make no mistake, if it does fail you will NEVER see a more developed MC1, you will NEVER see futuristic cars and vans, you will NEVER see the eagle, you will NEVER see a Dredd 'a bit more like the comics'. Ever.

If you get behind this one - even against your better judgement - then you might get what you want somewhere down the line, but if you don't there won't be any more for that to happen.

If your negativity puts even a handful of people off, and they in turn put other people off and this movie fails to make enough for sequels, you will have bitten off your own nose to spite your face. There will be no reboot in 10 years with dreddhead's script (face it kid, you blew any chance you'll ever have on working on the character in any official capacity in any medium with your attitude), no money thrown at the Judge Minty guys to 'do it properly'. Nothing. Just the comics and your basement. :)

@BM: Nobody excluded anything. What I said is true, but if you want to try to interpret it from an angle that makes it less so, knock yourself out. I'm happy with my statement. I'm also quite happy to watch you rage-out at me or the world. Amusing.

So, what you're for all intents and purposes saying is that because Dredd isn't as well known in the US as he is in the rest of the world, Britain, or wherever, that it's guaranteed to fail? Impeccable logic there. I can't think of a single exception to that... oh wait. Yes I can.

He does need to do quite well in the US though, as it happens (see what happens when you make a stupid assumption? You end up arguing something that wasn't even being disputed). They've said it needs to make $50m at the US box office to greenlight a sequel, which will NOT be easy or a given at all (although I'm sure if the overseas takings make up for any US shortfall they'd still consider it).

Not everyone here is posting with strident nerd-anger bursting from every orifice. You might want to calm down your own nerd-rage when responding or risk looking a bit mental yourself.

Urban has made no secret of the fact that he is a longtime devout fan of the character of Judge Dredd. Certainly, as a fan of Dredd, he would love to do sequels if the opportunity arose, but he's also a realist. A smaller film with a hard-R rating can be a harder sell to mainstream audiences. It may not make the $50 million needed to greenlight a sequel. That doesn't sound like so much, when we've been talking much larger numbers all summer, between Avengers, Amazing Spidey, and TDKR, but for a smaller film, which won't play on as many screens, that can be quite a hurdle. I'm certainly planning to see it. And I hope it proves to be both a great film and a surprise hit.
KeithM
KeithM - 7/27/2012, 9:06 AM
@BM: For my amusement, which parts of my statement are you disputing?

Been around for 35 years, without a break? Yes. No argument there surely.

Consistently popular? Yes. Nobody stated by which relative measure, but by the measure of British comicbook characters, I'd say Dredd was right up there and even in the overall pantheon IGN saw him voted as #35 (the people's opinion, not mine) greatest comicbook character of all time, which would also imply that quite a lot of people don't, in fact, find him a stupid concept.

So, yeah, I'm happy with my statement.

You surmised an awful lot on top of that which had nothing to do with me.
KeithM
KeithM - 7/27/2012, 9:20 AM
For the record, I'm NOT the World's Greatest Dredd Fan. I think a lot of the time his comic has been rubbish, often edging way beyond satire into pure parody (often of itself), but when done well can be really quite unique, smart, insightful, biting and/or interesting.

Sometimes the execution of a particular concept can be done badly (like the Stallone film, some of the comics), but that doesn't mean the concept itself is.

The significance and place in comics history of the character alone mocks that very idea. But if YOU think it's stupid, that's ok too. :)
KeithM
KeithM - 7/28/2012, 4:35 AM
I do say that for nearly every comic character to be fair. :)

Weekly/monthly deadlines mean that it's virtually impossible for every issue in a long running, constantly published comic to be gold, which is why I'm always a little wary of those who state that it should be 'just like the comics'...

What? Even the shit filler that constitutes a good proportion of the published material over the years?

But I am a fan of the character all the same. Just one that has, I hope, a healthy sense of perspective. :)

He must be getting desperate. He's complaining about the WALLS now ffs. :D

"So what did you think of the new Dredd movie?"

"It was terrible - they got the walls all wrong!!"

Funny thing is, he seems to be absolutely oblivious about how insane he sounds.
