Back in 2012, a reboot of the Judge Dredd property became a sleeper hit for comic book and action flick fans. Simply titled DREDD, the film centered around a singular day in the life of the judges of Mega-City One. Though it wasn't a financial hit at the box office, the simplistic plot and over-the-top visuals quickly solidified the film as cult classic with fans begging for a sequel. And while it may not be a feature film or even set within the same continuity as the 2012 movie, a return to the world of Judge Dredd is planned for the future in Rebellion Productions' JUDGE DREDD: MEGA-CITY ONE

But what about the star of DREDD, Karl Urban? He's been described as the perfect interpretation of the Judge, so it makes sense for fans to clamor for his return.

Urban, busy promoting his newest foray into comic book movies, THOR: RAGNAROK, has shown interest in returning to the character in the past. It should be no surprise, then,  that the subject was brought up to him during his latest press junket. According to Urban, if the story is right, he'll be there.

Well, Rebellion, who owns the rights to Judge Dredd, are currently developing a television series called Mega-City One, and I’ve had many discussions with them about my involvement of which I am interested, and I said to them, "Listen, if you write a character that has a function and a purpose and contributes to the overall story, then I might be very interested in reprising that role." I certainly wouldn’t want to step into it and just pay lip service to the movie. There has to be some material there that warrants further exploration of that character. So the ball’s in their court.

Hopefully, this will inspire the producers and writers of JUDGE DREDD: MEGA-CITY ONE to create a series worthy of the character's name. Having Karl Urban back as Dredd would certainly scratch the itch we've all had since 2012.

Catch Karl Urban as Skurge in THOR: RAGNAROK next month.

Makes sense. Really liked Dredd and everytime that it's on the TV I am still awestruck by it and end up rewatching bits of it.

@SimplyAz - iono the movie was underwhelming to me. i thought the villains were terrible except the dirty judges and the film just felt like a rip off of the raid (a much better film). Urban as dredd was badass but i thought he wasnt likeable or charismatic enough as the film wasnt really about him. It was about his intern.

@mastakilla39 - That's fair enough if you didn't like it. I was unsure going into it as I loved The Raid, but I ended up loving this.

Man now I want to re-watch both.

Hopefully we get more Iko Uwais.

Why in the world would they NOT keep the continuity from the film. It has a pretty good RT score...a small but devoted fan base and already developed characters. I really do not understand the thinking of people in Hollywood. DC screwed the pooch by not continuing the Nolan-verse and now the same mistake looks like it might happen again. What the hell?

@Forthas - totally agree with you in regards to keeping the continuity from the film, especially if Urban’s returning to the role. Otherwise it would just confuse the audience.

In regards to Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy being the launching pad for a cinematic universe, no way. Nolan’s Batman was very grounded and the introduction of actual SUPER heroes (Superman, Green Lantern) would be rather odd.

I’m not saying the DCEU (or whatever it’s actually called) is going great, but I’m glad they left Nolan’s trilogy as just that, a trilogy.

@MrMurdock - honestly, if we’re being real, I could see Batman Begins and Superman Returns in the sane universe

@MrMurdock -
@ThePanther -

I am not sure the fact that it is grounded would prevent a shared universe. Quite frankly the DC movies that I find to be tonally most similar are the Dark Knight films and Man of Steel. The whole point of Man of Steel is to introduce the idea of the discovery of extraterrestrial life and how people would react. Man of Steel was the most grounded of the DCEU films and in my opinion also the best so far.

@ThePanther - That I could definitely see, and it makes for a very interesting what if scenario if Returns did better and spanned a Superman trilogy of it's own before the met in World's Finest movie, expanding the universe.

@Forthas - I agree with you about Man of Steel being the best DCEU film so far, and the most grounded. I just personally like having the The Dark Knight Trilogy as it's own self-contained universe. I don't want Zack Snyder contaminating Nolan's Batman

@MrMurdock - I think that in the film business you have to take risks. If we applied that logic to everything then there would have been no continuation of the Star Wars films after Jedi! Ideally when Zack Snyder told the execs at WB that he could not make a DC universe from the Nolan trilogy because the films were too grounded (which he did), he should have been fired at that moment.

That said...your argument against continuing from the Dark Knight films - even though I disagree with it - is the only one I can understand and can respect.

Hope he comes back. That 2012 movie will be remembered fondly, and is pretty underrated.

A gritty, violent Dredd show would be great. Urban was so good in that movie and looks badass in Ragnorok. Dredd is such an amazing character with so much potential.

I think people are a little overly crazy for the movie. Granted, it's pretty damn good and surely awesome, but at the very leasr I'm glad Karl Urban cares about the role and isn't just interested in a paycheck if it means disappointing the fans (one of whom he is).

Dredd is one the best comic book movies. I would put in the top 5 of all time.

I would love a sequel to the movie even if it is only direct to video.

I'd rather Dredd not be the sole focus of Megacity One. There are other 2000AD characters to introduce after all.
