Damon Lindelof On Solving WB's "JUSTICE LEAGUE Problem"

Damon Lindelof On Solving WB's "JUSTICE LEAGUE Problem"

In a massive, in-depth interview with writer Damon Lindelof, THR ask him about everything from Lost to Star Wars -- but most interesting is the response he gives when asked about the problems WB are having getting a Justice League movie off the ground..

Love or hate his stuff, Damon Lindelof gets a LOT of work. Coming off Star Trek Into Darkness with J.J. Abrams once again, many fans wondered if he'd be involved in the new Star Wars movie in some capacity, and in his interview with The Hollywood Reporter they do ask him about that -- but they also quiz him about the planned Justice League film at Warner Bros. Although he is asked outright if he'd like to take a crack at the script, Lindelof plays coy, instead detailing what he feels the major issue with getting the movie together in the first place is.

THR: If Warner Bros called and asked you to help solve their Justice League problem, would you take that call?

Lindelof: The Justice League problem? I think a lot of that depends on Man of Steel. The Justice League problem is not a problem of, who is the bad guy that Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, Superman, whoever you decide to pit them against. The problem is: What’s the tone of that movie? They’ve been struggling with launching their own tone. The tone of Green Lantern is very different from the tone of The Dark Knight. They clearly inhabit two entirely different worlds. You want to feel like someone is establishing a world where the Justice League can exist, maybe Man of Steel is that movie. If Man of Steel works, and it’s great, I think it starts to make sense where Paradise Island is in that world. Because that’s an entirely different world than the one Christopher Nolan introduced.

Do you agree? If so, would you like to see Lindelof have a go at it? Be sure to click the link below to check out the full interview...Lost fans in particular won't want to miss it.

As long as JLA don't turn out like RISES, it'll be pure gold!

Bring on DARKSEID :P

Lindelof sucks. He'll make everybody in the movie question their state and have daddy issues, while ending the movie with unresolved plot points and stupid cliffhangers.

People know nothing about Lindelof. It's all blind hate.

Go listen to his filmaid discussion on slashfilm.

And Dark Knight Rises rocks, hope JLA is half as good. IMO, Avengers was not.

Just get Zack Snyder to helm this thing. From what we're all seeing from Man of Steel, he's nailed the tone and the character and the feeling of realistic fantasy with Superman. Everything looks epic, so why not do Justice League?

He gave a good answer and I agree, MOS will set the tone for any future JL film. It all has to feel like it fits, like these superheroes all exist in the same world. Once that's established you can move on.

All of these different tones exist in the world in which we live. I live a very different life, a very different existence, from a soldier, a crack addict, an astronaut, a cop, a teacher, a priest, a farmer, a prepubescent girl. I, my family, and my friends might be considered goofballs to some, while others might think we need to lighten up. The greatest conflicts in life often bring different people together and are what bridges the divide between people with such wide differences in their own realities. I understand what Lindelof is saying, but stark contrasts in tone can often lead to something more interesting than bringing together things which are already similar.

You still haven't addressed the overly contrived plots and the arcs that go nowhere in everything Lindelof produces. Sure, you like him and i don't, but seriously? "virgins living in their mommy's basement", I find it hard to believe Lindelof can walk, with you hanging on between his legs so tight.

@crashrendar

agree. I think that would be the perfect route to go.

Just because a movie has a realistic tone doesnt mean there cant be EPIC and awesome fantastical stuff.

Step one: keep this hack far from it!

All you have to do is reboot Batman, keep the other characters, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, etc all in the Man of Steel universe, keep it as real as that world is. Let them hear about one another, but give the heroes their own cities to worry about, their own little universe, if you will, to save. Then they all come together for one common bad guy threatening the world. It is too easy.

Do not put Darkseid in the very first movie. He should be saved until much later.

Love or hate'em, he's exactly right. I personally don't think a successful Man of Steel movie will necessarily mean Flash/Wonder Woman/Justice League movies being made right away. I think it's more likely Warner Bros will just want Man of Steel sequels, a Man of Steel trilogy just like Batmans Dark Knight trilogy before it.

While I'm not his biggest fan, he is right and I do think that MOS is the right tone for their JLA film and other DC superheroes. I think Batman can work great in that world, this way we get to see a very different Batman with other stories (because: supernatural involved heavily) and some interesting villains. As for GL/Flash/WonderWoman/Aquaman/MartianManhunter; it'd work great too. They're fantastic superheroes and just incredibly powerful. They're the biggest there are and it time for them to rule the screen. WB should attract good writers and directors and give them the time they need.

Keep it in the real world like Man of Steel. There's not only Metropolis, but Gotham, Central City, Paradise Island, etc. All in the same world. It's not that hard. Fantastic superheroes in a real world environment.

Lol at Rises being better than Avengers. Sure, if you like your superhero movie being based around everybody except your superhero, I guess it's a masterpiece. "YAY! That new Batman movie was awesome!!! Too bad Batman wasn't in it."

The Dark Knight trilogy is like getting amazing forplay, followed by some of the best sex ever, then having your chick tell you she was born a man right as you're bout to nut. TDKR is a massive case of blue balls.

I really hope he doesn't have anything to do with the JL screenplay.
Hopefully, they can get a great writer like Mark Waid to help with the plot of the movie.

I have to agree w/ thewonderer

I didn't think Avengers was as good as Rises, and I didn't think Rises was as good as TDK, BUT I thought Rises was the one w/ the most references to the various comics it pulled from.
