WB Starts Rolling Out JUSTICE LEAGUE Merchandise; Are They Paving The Way For The Movie?

Based on "The New 52" characters, Warner Bros. has now started a bid to raise awareness about the Justice League with a big merchandise push in Target stores. Are they preparing consumers for the planned Justice League MOVIE? Read on for details.

Unlike Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. don't have a series of solo movies which have helped to build up brand recognition for the Justice League members. Green Lantern was a commercial failure, Batman's story came to an end in The Dark Knight Rises and it's Man of Steel which will seemingly serve as the launching point for a reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe. Should that prove to be a success, a Justice League movie is expected to hit by 2015 at the very earliest.

In an interesting report over at Variety, they reveal that Warner Bros.' consumer products division is now getting consumers familiar with the team by launching a huge range of products exclusively through Target. Despite being inspired by "The New 52" (which many fans hope will also be the main inspiration for the movie) and focusing on Aquaman, Batman, Cyborg, The Flash, Green Lantern, Superman and Wonder Woman, the site speculates that, "getting stores used to carrying Justice League merchandise beyond the traditional toy aisle could create a boon for WB once the 'Justice League' film bows years from now."

This is a very smart move by the studio, especially as it seems they've made the decision to introduce their superheroes all in one film rather than one by one. As the site points out, "Target deal could highlight which products consumers gravitate toward more before the full 'Justice League' movie line debuts." If Aquaman and Cyborg products sell well, that may just increase the likelihood of both appearing in the Justice League movie. What do you guys think? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts on this news in the usual place!

Well, this might be the case, especially if the rumoured Rocksteady JL game is really in the making.

I personally think they don't need to do the 'Marvel' method, Man of Steel could be the only lead in, all they'd need to do is hint at a much bigger universe. Heck, Krypton can mention Oa, or the GL of their sector will not return in time to aid evacuation of the planet or can be even more subtle.

Anyways just use Man of Steel to establish tone and stick with it, if it works.

However, I take it we are getting no Superman game with this?

I know movie tie-ins are normally terrible, but I want my Superman fix after watching the movie.

As much as I like the New 52's JL series, Martian Manhunter over Cyborg Any day of the week.

That said, this sounds awesome and looks like WB has finally got their act together for the JL film. If anything, all they need to do is just adapt Bruce Timm's JL episode "secret origin" or whatever it's called and tweak and add somethings to it to make it movie worthy!

Definitely a good alternative to making individual movies to lead-in, as long as WB doesn't have the "We're only making this movie to sell toys!" mindset.

Maybe DC could take a page out of Marvel's book and at least make the DCnU Superman suit similar do MoS.

I dont mind the factor of having a justice league film and then branch off into solo films. Everyone knows who Batman is, no need of an origin story or year one (like it could even beat Batman Begins :P) everyone knows who wonder woman and aquaman are and they could explain the mythology in solo films down the road (Thor styalized films) the flash is well known and can easily go either way of post or pre justice league film. To me, he is the one hero that everyone would readily and easily accept rather then fear. He would be the icon of superheroes and costumed vigilantes... Martian Manhunter (or Cyborg) would be introduced in the justice league film...

Generally MM > Cyborg for me because I grew up on the JL cartoons.

But the thing is I think MM can carry his own movie really well actually. Our fascination with the red planet and sending our rovers (including most recently curiosity) provides for a natural "gateway" to introducing a rich mythos of Mars once having been inhabited by a great civilization millions (or billions) of years ago.

If they take that route with the story, and show J'onn as the last Martian kept in suspended animation for all these eons and get awakened by human explorers it could be a really solid solo outing. And then use him in Justice League 2.

Cyborg doesn't have that ability to carry a movie to me. I really view him as a pretty goofy character generally, even the name Cyborg sounds corny and very 80s. I understand the need/desire for diversity of the cast (although MM would probably be played by a black actor too), but I think the best way to go about a lineup in the first movie would to keep it small:

Superman
Batman
WW
Green Lantern (John Stewart)
Flash

Then have a bunch of those solo outings, including MM mentioned before, a Hawkgirl/Hawkman combo Thanagarian/Ancient Alien storyline, maybe a Green Arrow solo, a Steel solo would be badass imho.
