Shortly after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released in theaters, Warner Bros. shared a deleted scene online showing Lex Luthor communicating with Steppenwolf in the downed Kryptonian ship. By the time our first look at Steppenwolf in Justice League arrived, however, he looked positively cartoonish and not nearly as threatening as the silhouette we saw the year before.
It seems that's something filmmaker Joss Whedon can be credited for, as an exchange on Vero has pointed to Zack Snyder bringing back his take on Steppenwolf for Zack Snyder's Justice League.
With reports indicating that Warner Bros. is spending between $20 million - $30 million on finishing the film, it undoubtedly makes sense for us to see Steppenwolf as originally intended in this hotly anticipated Director's Cut. How much incarnation that will differ from the theatrical version is something we may not discover until a first look at this version of Justice League is released.
It's intriguing to wonder what the villain could look like now, as it's impossible to imagine the one we got fitting into the aesthetic of a Zack Snyder movie. Instead, he's likely to be quite a bit more fearsome.
