Avengers: Infinity War has now passed the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office making it the new gold standard for superhero movies and what they should be aiming for commercially. During a recent interview with Kevin Smith, writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus were asked what they would do to "fix" the DC Films Universe and their answer was...interesting, to say the least.
"I mean, I would look at what Marvel did out of necessity, in that they didn’t have their A-list characters," Markus replied. "They didn’t have Spider-Man. They didn’t have the X-Men. They went down a line and found, I mean, he’s pretty f*cking famous, he’s Iron Man, but he wasn’t there, and they made a really good movie out of it." So, is the solution to focus on lesser known characters?
"I might put Batman and Superman and everybody else, I mean Wonder Woman is doing fine, aside for a second," Markus continued. "Go through the vast world and go, ‘That guy,’ or ‘That girl,’ and go, ‘Let’s just make a really good movie, and not a universe, and see what happens.’ There’s a lot of spaghetti being thrown at the wall." In fairness, we recently heard that this is what new DC movie boss Walter Hamada is trying to do so Warner Bros. is finally starting to make some headway.
"My familiarity with the DC universe is not that great but I can just go, strategically, ‘Make one,'" McFeely added. "To quote Justice League, ‘Save one person.'" Smith took great delight in that, pointing out the fact the writers had essentially just said they would fix the DCEU "with their own advice." Ouch! Regardless, with Aquaman shaping up to be amazing, things are looking up at last...
