JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Ciaran Hinds Talks CGI Steppenwolf And The Villain's Plans For Earth

Justice League star Ciaran Hinds reveals that he never met the movie's cast during shooting and details the process behind bringing Steppenwolf to life and what the villain from Apokolips has planned...

Game of Thrones alum Ciaran Hinds will play Steppenwolf in Justice League and while our first look at the villain recently came via some LEGO sets and action figures, we know very little about what to expect from him. He will, however, be an entirely CGI character whose sights are set on retrieving the three powerful Mother Boxes and conquering Earth seemingly on behalf of the villainous Darkseid.

In a new interview, Hinds reveals that he never actually got to spend any time with the movie's star-studded cast as his scenes were shot entirely with motion-capture to be added in post-production.

"I don’t know whether they’re all afraid to come and meet me — no, no, they weren’t, really. Because it’s imaginary, you do it with green screen," Hinds tells the BBC. "That was another challenge, you could say, yeah. But it was quite fun. And they’re very encouraging in what you do, suggesting ‘Over here, look over there, imagine that, do this here, they’re coming at you now.'"

Hinds also shed some light on the huge amount of work going into creating Steppenwolf's costume and revealed that he actually turned to friend Liam Neeson (A Monster Calls) for advice on playing a motion-capture character. "I didn’t even have a costume when I was doing it. It’s all done in motion capture. So, they stick a helmet on your head, they put two cameras around, and they capture all your expressions, facial expressions. So basically, they’re going to concoct some kind of construction and they will use my facial expressions – eyes, mouth, voice – they’ll turn into this murderous, avenging Steppenwolf from the planet Apokolips, apparently, who’s bent on hell on Earth."

It sounds like we're really in store for something special when it comes to Steppenwolf in Justice League and while the vast majority of fans would have preferred to see Darkseid get the spotlight, it should be fun to see what Hinds - no stranger to playing bad guys - brings to the table this November.

Actors meeting and bonding has been shown to cause more dynamic on screen acting as the characters play off each other.

@noahthegrand - Really...Where? Is there a study somewhere that shows that? Do you mean like when Tom Hanks was nominated for an Academy Award in Cast Away for talking to himself? Or Robert Redford winning a Golden Globe for All is Lost where he was the only actor in the movie? Or Sandra Bullock in her Academy Award nominated performance in Gravity? The moral of the story is, don't just make shit up by saying "Actors meeting and bonding has been shown to cause more dynamic on screen acting as the characters play off each other" because the fact is it hasn't been shown. That might be your opinion, but it most definitely has not been shown and if you think it has, tell us where.

@DeskTopHero - Lol. As you stated, those actors were alone. In this movie he won't be, he will be on screen with other actors. So yeah, more chemistry between actors that are acting together is a good thing. So I thing you just epically failed at trying to make yourself look smarter. I agree with Noah. Not that this means in any way that the performance will be bad though. Could still be fantastic.

@WYLEEJAY - I guess u weren't able to keep up with the conversation. 1) The overall point here is that these people are ACTING. Do you know what that means? Hanks was nominated for an AA for talking to a deflated vollyball. Did he bond with that ball? No, he acted. If the Justice League ACTORS are pretending Steppenwolf is their mortal enemy (and a STRANGER from another world to boot) why do they need to bond? By definition they are STRANGERS to each other and again, they are ACTING!

And 2) back to my original point, where is it "SHOWN" that actors who bond have a better acting dynamic?

Finally 3) the FAIL, wyleejay, is yours and yours alone.

@DeskTopHero - Lol. You lost your own argument the moment you started talking about actors that won awards for acting to THEMSELVES. These guys won't be acting to themselves. They will be acting to another PERSON, that they can't see. So it's not the same. Good try though. Moving on.

Gimme some Brutal combos from Steppenwolf! Also it's cool that he talks a little about Darkseid, and Apokolips which is just awesome to say out loud when discussing comic book movies with drinking buddies and everyone else hasn't a clue what you're talking about.

@MrFurious93 - Now I'm just hoping for the Killer Instinct narrator to keep shouting "monster combo" and "combo breaker" for the final fight.
