JUSTICE LEAGUE: We Finally Have An Explanation As To Why Superman Didn't Don His Black Suit

There have been a lot of conflicting reports about why the Man of Steel didn't don his black costume from the comic books in Justice League but costume designer Michael Wilkinson has now cleared things up.

While a lot of fans have blamed Joss Whedon for the lack of Superman's black suit in Justice League, that deleted scene on the recently released Blu-ray confirmed that Zack Snyder was never actually going to put the Man of Steel in the iconic costume. That sequence featured the black suit in the background but Clark Kent walked straight past it and decided to wear his red and blue outfit instead.

During a recent interview, Justice League costume designer Michael Wilkinson was asked why Henry Cavill never put it on and confirmed that it ultimately just didn't work in the story they were telling.

"The black suit is something that has fascinated us as filmmakers from the get-go," he confirmed when asked about its absence in Justice League. "We saw a glimpse of it in the nightmare sequence from Man of Steel when Superman was wading through skulls, and in the deleted scene from Justice League where you do see Clark walking through the spaceship and it's teased in the background."

"When we were prepping Justice League, at first it seemed that it might be a logical choice for the look of Superman when he's resurrected," Wilkinson continued, echoing the thoughts of many comic book fans. "Zack is extremely respectful and passionate about the depiction of Superman in comic books and graphic novels, and traditionally when he is resurrected, he is in the black suit."

"But as the tone of the film developed and we were in pre-production, the filmmakers felt that the classic red and blue suit seemed more appropriate to our story and our script," he concluded. "It seemed that a more positive, upbeat image of Superman was what was needed – the idea of hope and that the world could in fact be saved was important, so that's the direction that we went."

So, there you have it! Snyder may be a huge fan of the source material and someone fans have rallied around while taking aim at Whedon but it was never the filmmaker's plan to include the black suit so its absence is something The Avengers director is innocent of. @Krav - they made a lot of GREAT decisions during post prod. Snyder wasted 350 mil+ shooting useless crap and test footage. Whedon was able to make a passable film by cutting all that useless crap out. Only sad part is that the film is just generic. Not terrible like Bvs and Suicide Squad, but nothing special either.

@mastakilla39 - Ummm, it was actually Warner Bros. and Joss Whedon that wasted 350 million dollars. Not Snyder. Get your facts straight.

@SisterSunday52 - Not sure what snyder cult you've been to but Whedon only got about 30 mil to fix whatever crap snyder filmed. It doesn't cost 100 mil to to re-edit a disaster film. So even if he wasted less than 350, it's obvious he spent a majority of it.

@mastakilla39 - Snyder spent 250, at most. Hollywood Reporter said Joss Whedon and Warner Bros. spent an additional 300, or 100 million on re-shoots and to CGI shave Superman's face. The film failed to break even because of this, and #ReleaseTheSnyderCut boycotting the theatrical release.

@mastakilla39 - Also, out of three hours, only 2-5 minutes of the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman was "useless crap." I don't entirely hate what Whedon did. I liked the line "I believe in truth, but I'm also a big fan of justice" and a few other moments, but the film was Snyder's and ALL Whedon should have done was add any dialogue needed to keep the general audience from fundamentally misinterpreting his film, about hope returning to a world that seems devoid of it, as a nihilistic "don't be a hero" story. That's what Patty Jenkins did with his Wonder Woman story, and THAT'S why it's the most well received DC Film.

Whedon completely changed everything and made a film that could have revolutionized superhero team films into a generic team film.

@mastakilla39 - Wonder Woman was anything but generic (contrary to the misguided ASSumptions that it's a "ripoff of Captain America: The First Avenger) because it honored Snyder's vision while making it more accessible to general audiences.
