Zack Snyder Weighs In On Ben Affleck's THE BATMAN Becoming An HBO Max Series And His Role In THE FLASH

Ben Affleck will reprise the role of Batman in The Flash, while speculation continues to run rampant that his take on The Batman could become an HBO Max series. Now, Zack Snyder has weighed in...

Zack Snyder's Justice League has certainly generated quite a bit of buzz over the past few days, and while we don't have any viewership data yet, it appears to have been a hit for HBO Max.

Whether that means there's a future for the "SnyderVerse" at Warner Bros. remains to be seen, but the four-hour movie certainly has the potential to spawn a number of sequels and spinoffs.

MTV News asked the filmmaker about expanding his DC Comics world in that way, and Snyder commented specifically on speculation about Ben Affleck's The Batman becoming an HBO Max series.

"I think all those are great ideas. I think Martian Manhunter or Deathstroke are great ideas for this kind of prequel concept where you're back with Batman and his young ward and their just doing what they did for 20 years in Gotham. That would be an interesting thing," Snyder pondered. "I don't know if Ben would want to do that. Because it's such a vast canvas you can poke into it anywhere you want and find a kind of small story that would be interesting to tell, you know. I mean, Deathstroke's origin is an amazing place to go and look."

During the same interview, the director was asked for his thoughts on Affleck's planned return to the role in The Flash. That movie expected to serve as a farewell for his iteration of the Caped Crusader, though it's always possible the actor's stance has changed after the positive response to the Snyder Cut.

Regardless, the director is definitely excited about the prospect of seeing more Batfleck.

"I guess from my point of view I think that that's cool," Snyder says. "I mean, I don't know what else to say except, yeah, that's an amazing idea to, you know - the butterfly on a wheel concept of time getting distorted is cool, and I'd be interested to see what that means. I mean, I think that in a lot of ways what we've done is kind of undeniable now, as far as the stamp it's put on the DC world. So, yeah."

We really don't know what the future holds for the DC Extended Universe, but Warner Bros. is clearly taking a very different approach to this world moving forward. As well as movies which appear to be set in the same shared universe, some are clearly supposed to be part of their own (like Matt Reeves' The Batman). There are also a vast array of small screen projects being developed for various platforms.

Will that include an HBO Max spinoff revolving around Affleck's Dark Knight? We'll see.

of the DCEU movies according to Rotten Tomatoes!

10. Suicide Squad

Suicide-Squad

Score: 26%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Suicide Squad boasts a talented cast and a little more humor than previous DCEU efforts, but they aren't enough to save the disappointing end result from a muddled plot, thinly written characters, and choppy directing.

Task Force X's debut was a box office hit, but issues behind the scenes meant that the finished product was something of a mess. There was a lot here that worked, and it's a shame critics mostly focused on what didn't, especially as the dynamic between these villains was a blast to follow. Ultimately, it was Harley Quinn and Deadshot who stole the show thanks to Margot Robbie and Will Smith.

9. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

BvS

Score: 28%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice smothers a potentially powerful story -- and some of America's most iconic superheroes -- in a grim whirlwind of effects-driven action.

It may have been vastly different from what Marvel Studios delivered in terms of tone, but Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice didn't deserve the negative reviews it received, even if there were some questionable creative decisions (Batman should never kill). Seeing the Man of Steel go to war with the Dark Knight was a blast, and from a visual standpoint, Zack Snyder delivered a stunning, must-see epic movie.

8. Justice League (2017)

jl

Score: 40%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Justice League leaps over a number of DC movies, but its single bound isn't enough to shed the murky aesthetic, thin characters, and chaotic action that continue to dog the franchise.

Justice League was a mixture of two competing visions (Zack Snyder's original movie and Joss Whedon's extensive reshoots), but it certainly wasn't the worst superhero movie ever released! Whedon's hopeful take on Superman was welcomed, but the cheesy humour was not, and Steppenwolf proved to be a major disappointment. It will be interesting seeing how "The Snyder Cut" fares when it hits HBO Max next year.

7. Man Of Steel

MOS

Score: 56%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Man of Steel's exhilarating action and spectacle can't fully overcome its detours into generic blockbuster territory.

Considered the best big screen take on Superman by many fans, critics weren't quite what to make of a darker take on this character in Man of Steel (General Zod's death remains a huge talking point even seven years later). There were a tonne of iconic moments, though, including Superman taking flight for the first time and that memorable final reveal that he'd donned a pair of glasses to work at The Daily Planet.

6. Wonder Woman 1984

9283920321

Score: 59%

Rotten or Fresh? Rotten

Critics Consensus: Wonder Woman 1984 struggles with sequel overload, but still offers enough vibrant escapism to satisfy fans of the franchise and its classic central character.

When the review embargo first lifted, Wonder Woman 1984 had a score in the high 80s and a completely different Critics Consensus to the one you've read above...oh, and it was "Certified Fresh" as well! That all changed in the weeks which followed, hence why this sequel is now considered "Rotten." Why the response so drastically altered is hard to say, but this take on Diana Prince was not embraced by fans.

5. Aquaman

Aquaman

Score: 65%

Rotten or Fresh? Fresh

Critics Consensus: Aquaman swims with its entertainingly ludicrous tide, offering up CGI superhero spectacle that delivers energetic action with an emphasis on good old-fashioned fun.

Aquaman was definitely a step in the right direction for the DC Extended Universe, but not even that made many critics happy! There were heaps of incredible visuals, lots of groundbreaking technology, and some legitimately funny jokes, and the action was definitely strong. It sometimes tried a little too hard to be a Marvel movie, though, so that could explain why it wasn't ultimately "Certified Fresh."

4. Zack Snyder's Justice League

238237283121434441213333234145332443344

Score: 73%

Rotten or Fresh? Fresh

Critics Consensus: Zack Snyder's Justice League lives up to its title with a sprawling cut that expands to fit the director's vision -- and should satisfy the fans who willed it into existence.

Zack Snyder's Justice League has been embraced by fans (and many critics!), and it's currently just 2% away from being "Certified Fresh." Whether it will reach that status remains to be seen, but this four-hour epic has been embraced by most, even if it does nothing to change the minds of those who don't like the filmmaker's work. Now, the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse movement demanding a sequel has begun...

3. Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

HBOP

Score: 78%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: With a fresh perspective, some new friends, and loads of fast-paced action, Birds of Prey captures the colorfully anarchic spirit of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

Birds of Prey flopped at the box office, but was exactly the movie critics were looking for...well, mostly! While not quite a critical darling, Cathy Yan's unique take on the vibrant world of Harley Quinn was positively received, even if comic book fans were disappointed (and many will be angry to see it rank above the Snyder Cut). After all, the Birds of Prey were an afterthought in their own movie, but this still pretty good fun.

2. Shazam!

Shazam

Score: 90%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: An effortlessly entertaining blend of humor and heart, Shazam! is a superhero movie that never forgets the genre's real power: joyous wish fulfillment.

The most Marvel-style DCEU movie to date, Shazam! was a legitimately very funny origin story for this character, but also one that featured a lot of heart. Given how weak the Seven Deadly Sins were as villains - and how rushed the introduction of the Shazam Family was - this score seems a little too high, but there's no getting around the fact that David F. Sandberg delivered an awesome take on this fan-favourite superhero.

1. Wonder Woman

WW

Score: 93%

Rotten or Fresh? Certified Fresh

Critics Consensus: Thrilling, earnest, and buoyed by Gal Gadot's charismatic performance, Wonder Woman succeeds in spectacular fashion.

Still considered the best DCEU movie by many, Patty Jenkins definitely exceeded expectations with Wonder Woman and will hopefully do the same again with Wonder Woman 1984. Making it clear that female-led superhero blockbusters can work, the 2017 release was a lot of fun, features a great cast, and an unforgettable - and now iconic scene courtesy of that "No Man's Land" sequence set during WWI.

@Godzilla2000Zer - I'm excited as well, I feel like the detective part of batman has just gone ignored and largely unutilized in like action batman.

@NathimusPrime - Yep true and plus we get to see a more serious take on The Riddler I hated Jim Carrey's performances unfortunately but Paul Dano is a talented choice so this movie is gonna be awesome.

@Godzilla2000Zer -

Cloverfield - B Movie; good for Rifftrax.

Let me in - Have not seen it. (I don't do scary movies with kids.

PotA films - OK, but inferior to the more interesting first film in the reboot series.

I have no idea what to make of the large second quote, but I do want to see a prequel to this Batman in comic form just like how Injustice got a bunch of comic prequels
Repian
Repian - 3/23/2021, 5:31 AM
@bkmeijer - A prequel? The cool thing is Deathstroke knowing Batman's true identity. Alfred and Gordon as targets, then Gordon dies and Barbara is an orphan.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 3/23/2021, 5:37 AM
@Repian - that's also an interesting story to follow up on, but they could intertwine that with Knightmare, like in the JL2 outline.

I much rather see the backstory of Joker killing Robin, sending Batman down the dark path we pick up with him in BvS.

The current canon is about to give me a brain aneurysm. This Flash movie is the only way to reset or merge certain properties.

I've never watched any of the CW shows but I'm a big fan of what they've implied for the future of the DC live action multiverse. Hope this movie is a spiritual successor

@JFerguson - nope. The story are totally fresh and seems stand alone, despite they still trasing the consequences of the infinite crisis. But trust me, the show is totally different than cringe cw show. Seems hbo max injected some budget on this superman. And yeah, glad we get the real superman in this series and his struggl to become a good father and a good earth's superhero. The fighting scene is good as hell.

Y'know what? Kudos to Warner Bros and DC. They finally found their lane. It is Phukital Ave, and on this road ANYTHING GOES. I'm all for it. If mutants and anything but mutant can live in two different worlds, why not go nutz in the multiverse? Make one shots, or cohesive tales as often (or never) as you'd like. Throw it all together in 30 years, and make our children's head explode with beautiful nerdy build up. This company needed to separate themselves from the MARVEL powerhouse. With MARVEL going into the seemingly inevitable comedy teen bop bs that we hoped would never happen, now would be a great time to flourish the darker serious tones that DC have mastered in graphic novels of the past. Penny, penny.

Yeah a few years ago, sure. But thing is, Batfleck is gonna be in Flashpoint or whatever they call it, so he'll get his time. At the beginning anyway. I'll bet the ending of the movie has a different actor when Barry comes back. Maybe not RoBattinson, I hope so
