It seems Marvel Studios had decided on the characters that would replace Iron Man, Captain America & Thor as the MCU's "trinity" when Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth & Chris Evans left the franchise.

Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe has obviously given multiple characters the spotlight in their solo movies over the years, Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) emerged as the unofficial power "trinity" of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

After standing together one last time to face Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark gave his life to put an end to the Mad Titan and his forces, Steve Rogers passed on the Cap mantle to Sam Wilson after returning to the past to live out his life with Peggy Carter, and while the God of Thunder is still around, it probably won't be too long before he decides to hang up Mjölnir.

In the new book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, author Joanna Robinson notes that Kevin Feige always knew it was only a matter of time before Evans, RDJ and Hemsworth parted ways with the franchise, and had a plan in place for three specific actors/characters to step in to their lead positions in the Avengers.

Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

"[Chadwick Boseman] told me the story about how on the set of Endgame, he and Brie Larson and Tom Holland sat around and talked about how they were the future of Marvel and how exciting that was for them. [Then] you look at the breakdown between the Sony-Marvel deal over Spider-Man, you look at Chad Boseman passing away, and you look at Brie Larson either not being a great fit or just, you know, being damaged by toxic fandom. So many factors came into play that sort of knocked their plan out [from] under them."

Boseman's tragic passing will obviously have forced the studio heads to rethink this plan, but Holland and Larson could still be positioned as two of the new "faces" of the MCU down the line - although we're sure Feige and co. have considered various other possibilities, especially with the recent influx of new heroes in the Disney+ shows.

Which characters would you most like to see take over from Rogers, Stark and the Odinson as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new trinity? Be sure to let us know in the comments section.

Makes sense

@Slotherin - I wish they took a page from the James Bond franchise and just recasted the heroes and kept going back to all the decades of great, timeless stories they had.

@California - This. Use Secret Wars and the “variants” explanation to recast and keep moving forward

I totally understand being prepared for replacing the "main" characters.
So that makes sense but it should happen organically, the way Captain Marvel was marketed poisoned the well.

@Blergh - I don't know about that.

@Blergh - I think it's just that Captain Marvel isn't a likeable superhero. She's tolerated and respected because of what she can do but she's always been annoying and just not "it" even in the comics. I feel like the MCU Trinity sits better with Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Panther (Shuri). Doctor Strange brings the mystical/cosmic side to it, Spider-Man brings the street/city side to it, and Shuri brings the science/wealthy side to it. They all balance how who came before.

@SonOfAGif - Halfway agree, looking purely at characters but from the actors side it wwouldn't work because Cumberback won't get that tied down. As for Shuri,,,,,,,no.

@SonOfAGif - that's not bad.

Not the worst idea they've had. Doing it with a recast T'Challa might have been trickier than what they prepared for, but I think it still had a chance to work. Perhaps they can reconsider a recast with the rumoured soft reboot.

@Fares - looks like the new plan is a bit of recast and not in a sense. Since his son is also named t'challa, most likely they will use the son to continue the stories they couldnt with chadwick after his death. So the official bp of the mcu will be his son

@CaptainFlapjaks - If they continue with the son and don't just drop him with the supposed soft reboot, I wonder whether they'll do a time skip or just age him up somehow.

@Fares - i think he will come from the future as an adult to fit with the multiverse aspect

Brie's resting bitch face doesn't help her at all.

Dr. Strange seems like an easy lead to sub in. Stark's limitless wealth served as a useful plot device/hole filler, and Dr. Strange's magic can do the same.

@Rosraf - Dr Strange is definitely the easy choice but that character has always been best served as a consultant who takes specific action rather than a key member of a team

@OmegaDaGrodd - I think similarly. He's dull, to me, when he's the main character as a hero.

This was likely that moment

Boseman passing is obviously bigger than the MCU but you know that changed a lot

Spider-Man is always a wild card because Sony are addicted to bad decision-making

Larson's Captain Marvel is referenced in MCU like one of the dogs all the time but The Marvel's has taken so long to come out, and she's been in so few projects in-between that a lot of the wind needs to get back in her sails

The pandemic screwed up a lot of MCU momentum, but not having an Avengers movie at the end of Phase 4 has really exacerbated that issue. Those movies really do a lot to align audience expectation
