Marvel's Release Date Shakeup Will Result In The Longest Gap Between MCU Movies In A Decade

We finally got an update on Marvel Studios' plans for its 2020/2021 slate last night, and the release date shakeup will result in the longest gap between two successive MCU movies in over a decade...

We had all been waiting for some kind of announcement relating to the status of Marvel's upcoming movie slate amid the coronavirus delays, and yesterday we finally got confirmation of that big release date shakeup most of us anticipated.

Black Widow will take Eternals' original date of November 6 2020, moving that movie forward to February 12, 2021, kicking off a chain reaction that pushes each successive film into a previously occupied spot. It's an unprecedented move and one that will likely have lasting ramifications for this shared world long past 2021.

In Richard Newby's extensive report on these shakeups, he points out something very interesting.

The last Marvel movie to hit the big screen was Spider-Man: Far From Home last July, which means that when Widow arrives in theaters later this year, it'll mark the longest amount of time audiences have gone without an MCU entry since the gap between 2008's The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 in 2010.

This situation is obviously far from ideal, but we will come out the other end eventually, and there will be a lot of very exciting movies to catch up on when we do.

How have you guys been handling quarantine? Let us know in the comments.

In some way it is I guess, 2009 was MCU-less back then without counting C-Men Origins: Wolverine. Whereas in this case it is true a year will have gone through without a MCU installment since July of last year. But it won't be fully be a year with no Marvel Studios movie since luckily Black Widow will be out in November.

This reminds me a little like the same time we had to wait after seeing The Avengers in May 2012 to Iron Man 3 which kinda came out literally year later around the same date in 2013.

Also, I believe there is a slight confusion: 2021 has three slated movies to be released, not four.

February 2021: The Eternals.

May 2021: Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.

November 2021: Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness

And that’s it. Unless I am missing something else.

2022 will have in February Thor: Love and Thunder along with Captain Marvel 2 in July of 2022 which may means Spider-Man 3 will have to move and Black Panther 2 seems to still be locked for that same year as well and thus making it another year with 3 MCU movies.

But never four.

@Oskir - Unless something change, that is the official slate for 2021/2022

@NinnesMBC - Spider-Man 3 is still supposed to be coming out July 2021.

@WakandanQueen - I see, I mixed up that date with 2022 for some reason, my bad.

@Oskir - You are right, I mixed up things. Crazy to think that once the pandemic has slowed down that three movies will go into production in order to meet those dates next year. Let’s hope for the best in that case. 🤞

@NinnesMBC - Yeah I am the most concerned about Shang-Chi, hope they won't have to rush it!

@WakandanQueen - It was supposed to start shooting in July to make that 2021 date, I’m guessing they expect it to be delayed

As much as I'm a fan of the MCU, maybe it's for the best that we have a gap before Black Widow. After FFH and Captain Narvel I was starting to get a little numb towards the films.

@CurlyBill - I’d tend to agree with this.
I always thought the smart move would have been to take a break for a couple years after endgame so that ending could have more impact.

Longer time means better quality. It could honestly work for the best.

@TheRationalNerd - Does it? Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Mary Poppins Returns? Zoolander 2? And they’re not working on the movie, it’s already made, just sitting there while everyone is on lockdown.

@TheRationalNerd - they're not changing anything about the movie.

@TheUnworthyThor - I dont really doubt Marvel's potential to put out good movies. I think that more can be great with more time.
