NOVA Project Confirmed To Be In Early Development At Marvel Studios; Updates On WONDER MAN & IROHHEART

A few recent rumors aside, we haven't had an official update on Marvel Studios' plans for Nova since the trades reported that a project focusing on the space-faring hero was in the works back in 2022.

Now, we have confirmation that a Nova series(?) is in early development.

"We love Nova. We are in really early development on Nova," Marvel's head of streaming, animation, and television Brad Winderbaum tells ComicBook.com. "We have a new system behind-the-scenes at Marvel Studios. We're more like a traditional studio now. We're developing more than we actually will produce. There are plans to develop Nova. I love Nova, too. I love Rich Rider, too. I hope it gets to the screen. The world is always chaos. There's always things. You gotta conjure these things to make them happen but I would love to see a Nova show, one day."

Last we heard, the plan was for Richard Rider (unless they decide to go with Sam Alexander) to make his MCU debut on the big screen, but based on what Winderbaum says here, it sounds like the Nova project will be a Disney+ series - or possibly a Special Presentation.

The Nova Corps were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, which led to speculation that Rider would eventually find his way into the GOTG franchise. James Gunn showed little interest in the character, but the Nova series - if that is indeed what it turns out to be - will most likely spin-out from Thanos decimating most of the Corps in the build-up to Avengers: Infinity War.

As for who might end up playing the character, there are persistent rumors that Nova is one of the roles Ryan Gosling was speaking to Marvel Studios about.

The Barbie actor hasn't really seemed too excited about the prospect of playing a superhero or joining the MCU in previous interviews, although he did mention Ghost Rider as one character he might be interested in taking a crack at (could the Spirit of Vengeance be another possibility?) on a couple of occasions. He also appeared to be a little more open to the idea while doing press for The Russo Bros.' The Gray Man last year.

“I think they felt my Kenergy," he said about working with the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors. "They must have felt it before I did. I hope they can manifest this MCU thing. I think that would be cool.”

Moon Knight scribe Sabir Pirzada was said to be penning the script, but there's a chance a new creative team will be attached by the time the project actually enters production.

In a separate interview with Agents of Fandom, Winderbaum confirmed that both Ironheart and Wonder Man are still on the way despite recent cancellation rumors.

“Yeah, absolutely. We’re editing both of those shows as we speak. They’re spectacular, they’re amazing, and they’re different…We’re able to explore corners of the universe that are really exciting. Riri Williams is one of them, and I cannot wait for people to meet Simon Williams.”

Rich Rider is the only version of Nova I want to see, don't need anymore kiddy heroes.

@marvel72 - If they want to go the route as Sam on earth taking care of terrestrial threats and Rich out in space hanging with the GotG, that's the best of both worlds IMO! However, if Rich is just gonna' be a 'one-and-done' to hand-off the mantle to Sam, that's going to grind the gears of more than just a few fans. 🤨

@SuperiorHeckler - Exactly, Nova has so much to offer and could build to the greatest cosmic storyline featuring him Annihilation.

Sam Alexander replacing him, will be annoying, these new versions are not as popular as the originals so why push them, when we have the originals.

@marvel72 - pushing the new versions is what irks me about characters like Riri Williams and Skarr…. Most of the MCU characters haven’t been properly portrayed let alone explored.

@Cobalt416 - Exactly right my man, there is so many great classic characters and stories but they seem to think we're done with Tony Stark and Steve Rogers time to focus younger crappy inferior versions of the legends.

MCU needs Nova before Ghost Rider. The MCU and DCU will be doing projects to keep up with each other and Nova could be the MCU's response to Green Lantern.

@JakeDaSnakkke - I agree. Don't even know who Ghost Rider would compete with, although I guess he kinda looks like Doctor Phosphoros with the flaming skull

Wasn't a fan of how the Nova corps were portrayed in Guadian's, hopefully Thanos took out all those ones and they get get a cooler reintroduction because they were as lame as those TVA guys in Loki.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 1:06 PM
@HashTagSwagg - yeah, they were quite simple police forces. Same with SWORD currently. SHIELD atleast managed to stand out beyond it's role in assembling heroes.
SuperiorHeckler
SuperiorHeckler - 3/16/2024, 1:55 PM
@HashTagSwagg - The NOVA Corp of Jimmy Gunn's universe were pretty damn lame. Closer to being Keystone-Cops than the cosmic police force of the galaxy. 🤨

@SuperiorHeckler - That’s because Gunn loves to dumb his characters down (I’ll never understand it).

Thought Nova was already supposed to be a show. Kinda hope we get that first, with Rider being the mentor to the first batch of Nova soldiers (including Sam) after Infinity War.

I do wanna see Nova on the big screen in an Annihilation movie down the line too though (together with Thor, Captain Marvel, the Guardians and some other cosmic characters).

Apophis71 - 3/16/2024, 2:25 PM
@bkmeijer1 - According to rumors and maybe the odd official comment here and there starting from post Endgame (as was some talk before with rumors)...

It was supposed to be a D+ show, then maybe a special presentation, then maybe a film, then maybe squeezed into something else rather than a titular Nova film/show, now maybe a show or special presentation again.

So basicaly we still know nothing as this article basicaly says it is one idea being thrown around for a show that may or may not get made. At most it simply suggests they are still planning on having Nova somewhere, somehow but when where is still up in the air.

bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 2:55 PM
@Apophis71 - so basically it's everything and nothing until we get an official announcement? No surprise there. And with so many projects in the works already, I think an announcement is some time off

This character is such a no brainer at this point. You open with the destruction of Xandar (bonus Thanos appearance), and Roman Deyy escapes with some kind of Xandarian power source or artefact or whatever, and he searches for someone worthy to continue the Nova Corps. Smash cut to a very average kid from Long Island and then you go from there.

Easy.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/16/2024, 1:17 PM
@IronDean2099 - or maybe they were already experimenting with the Infinity Stonethey had after Guardians 1 and before Thanos got it whose power they were maybe able to replicate or something to enhance their forces…

Maybe they had successfully experimented on one Richard Rider but they couldn’t do anymore due to the destruction of Xandar.
SuperiorHeckler
SuperiorHeckler - 3/16/2024, 2:00 PM
@IronDean2099 - It's so simple: Xandar science was studying and slowly syphoning the radiation of the Power Infinity Gem with the express purpose of creating a more powerful NOVA police force when Thanos suddenly arrives. Dey scrambles to take what they managed to syphon from the Power Gem and heads to earth. Rich then becomes the recipient. A super-easy origin story that practically writes itself! 🤓
IronDean2099
IronDean2099 - 3/16/2024, 2:32 PM
@SuperiorHeckler - this is pretty much what I was thinking.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 2:58 PM
@IronDean2099 - wouldn't be surprised if they change the origin to Rider already being a Xandarian or some other alien worlder.

The Guardians movies showed there are a lot of human-looking aliens out there, so I wouldn't mind or be surprised by a change like that. Same with Jack Flag. Not everything has to revolve around Earthlings imo.

At worst I hope for some animated project.

I like the fact that they're developing a lot of different properties, even if they don't get made. It allows the powers at be to see them all individually and then choose which they believe has the most potential for success.

Rather than committing and developing one story that may end up being a let down; like The Marvels. They can put the money on the right horse and see it through to the finish line. Now let's just hope they get some really good creative teams behind each of these developing properties so that they each have a fair chance at that success.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 2:59 PM
@RedFury - same here. Do hope that the projects they have announced fall under the produced one though. Would be lame to announce something and then just don't actually follow through
RedFury
RedFury - 3/16/2024, 3:16 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Thats a good point too. They should only announce things they are sure are going to make it into production. No point in getting anyone's hopes up, to then pull the rug out from under them. It also makes it seems like it's anarchy behind the scene's when stuff like that happens.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 3:21 PM
@RedFury - exactly. And also what is only gonna be released within two years. Think we're looking at a lot of projects that are gonna be released in 2027 or later already.
RedFury
RedFury - 3/16/2024, 3:31 PM
@bkmeijer1 - it's like they're committed to this idea of setting up the future so hard because it worked really well in the earlier phases in the MCU. Makes me wonder if its to appease the share holders, and encourage more investments. I'd be okay with a 2 year, even 4 year plan over trying to chart out a huge swath of a time. Especially with how many projects have changed, or dropped off in recent years.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/16/2024, 6:53 PM
@RedFury - guess shareholders do play a role, but regardless I think going phase by phase again would be a good approach (for the fans atleast). Here's hoping pandemics and strikes aren't gonna mess too much with plans and slates again though.

Pull a non-linear storyline involving both Nova's going the antman route.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/16/2024, 1:21 PM
Cool!!.

With the new system in place , it seems like they might be developing shows or such for characters but will ultimately only precede with the ones they think are strong enough which is understandable , I am fine with that!!.

Anyway , I’m intrigued by Wonder Man so i hope that turns out well!.
