In season two Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, long-buried Cold War secrets emerge which threaten to bring carnage to the streets of London. When a liaison with Russian villains takes a fatal turn, our hapless heroes must overcome their individual failings and raise their spy game in a race to prevent a catastrophic incident.
Gary Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but irascible leader of the spies, who end up in Slough House, a dumping-ground department of MI5, due to their career-ending mistakes as they frequently find themselves blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world.
Jack Lowden plays River Cartwright in the show, and we spoke to him earlier this month to discuss his return as the disgraced secret agent.
Even if you haven't watched Slow Horses - and we really can't recommend it highly enough - we're sure you'll recognise Lowden's name. The actor is frequently "fantasy cast" as various Marvel and DC characters, including Wolverine, The Flash, and Green Arrow.
So, does the genre interest him?
"I definitely prefer to watch stuff like Slow Horses," he admitted when we asked if he prefers grounded projects like this one. "I’m not a massive watcher of those kinds of things, but I know that doing it would be a hell of a lot of fun. Yeah…I don’t really watch them as much as I probably should."
So, Lowden clearly isn't a comic book fan by any means, but he certainly sounds interested in taking a crack at the popular genre. He'd be a great fit for a number of characters in the Marvel and DC Universes, and this series has put him on the map in a big way.
While Marvel Studios continues scooping up top-tier talent for the MCU, we're sure new DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are keen to bring some big names to the rebooted DCU. Lowden would be a phenomenal addition to that world, particularly if it's as a character like Green Arrow, someone who needs a great actor to bring them to life on the big screen.
The first two episodes of Slow Horses will debut globally on Friday, December 2, exclusively on Apple TV+, followed by one new episode weekly, every Friday through December 30.
