Budget For Men In Black 3 Hits The $215 Million Mark

Budget For Men In Black 3 Hits The $215 Million Mark

Script problems, movie star behavior, and a terrible shooting schedule all seem to be contributing factors in making the latest Men In Black film cost millions of dollars more than the previous movie.

Men In Black 3 has had its fair share of problems from supposed script problems to Will Smiths gigantic bus that was irritating New Yorkers. More problems seemed to have surfaced recently mentioning that Smith has been displaying some extreme star behavior. This includes having sets torn down and rebuilt to better suit his style of acting.

Reports The Wrap:

Smith also had a set rebuilt in order to accommodate an improvised scene he filmed, according to two people involved in the production. The scene involved a telephone call between Smith’s character, Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones’s character, Agent K. Some time after Jones filmed his portion of the call, it was Smith’s turn. But Smith improvised quite a bit, and his part of the conversation no longer matched Jones’s. Smith told producers he wanted to see Jones on camera responding to the new material -- a request that required the crew to rebuild the set, or at least a few walls of it -- so Jones could film there again.

On another occasion, early in the filming, Smith had the crew tear down a nearly completed set at Kaufman Astoria Studios because it "wasn't right," a person with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

With all the problems that are occurring it looks like it is going to take its toll on Sony's wallet. Sources are saying that the budget for the film has ballooned all the way up to $215 Million, that is about $75 million more than what it took to make Men In Black 2. The source is also saying that the budget is after tax rebates that New York was offering.

Men In Black 3 Stars Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Rip Torn, and Jemaine Clement and will be released on May 25, 2012.

fattieacid - Exactly. Everybody thought Green Lantern was gonna be huge and First Class was hated on and it was gonna bomb and the opposite happened.

I say this will definitely be better than MIB II, no matter what's happening on set.

Its really not that uncommon to have a set rebuilt or remade for reshoots. Especially for someone like Will Smith who is bigger than Sony and pretty much has any say. ESPECIALLY for a movie like Men In Black which will rake in all kinds of money. I'm working on a film now where the director will walk into the room and go "This isn't the way I thought it was going to look" and have it completely redone.

thats terrible of SONY/Columbia...they give Ghost Rider 2 only $75 million and The Amazing Spider-man only $80 million and $215 for this!!!!
plasticman
plasticman - 6/23/2011, 2:56 PM
@ Rango- That's because those movies don't have Will Smith in them. They are pandering to his box office draw.

@ SSiref- I think I see where you're headed with your comment. Let Sony continue to pile on the money for this movie and then they will have to sell off franchises to pay down their debt. Pile it on, Sony, pile it on!

Aside from Will Smith being a mega-douche, there's really no reason for a 3rd installment of "MIB." The 1st film was mediocre at best and the 2nd was dreadful. Given all the problems of the 3rd film, I smell ass-bomb.
