APRIL FOOLS HOAX

Ace and Gary are back, baby. Warner Bros. has today given the greenlight on a movie version of The Ambiguously Gay Duo. Ashton Kutcher (“Two and a Half Men”) and Charlie Sheen (“Two and a Half Men”) are said to be in final negotiations for the leads. There are no details on which actor will play which part of the superhero duo. Nikki Fink tweeted, "Sheen and Kutcher beat off some stiff competition from Kirk Cameron (“Growing Pains”) and Angus T Jones (“Two and a Half Men”) for the coveted roles."

The animated comedy sketch debuted on The Dana Carvey Show and then found a permanent home on Saturday Night Live. For those of you not familiar with the controversial but hilarious sketches, The Ambiguously Gay Duo is a parody of the stereotypical comic book superhero duo. It clearly satirized suggestions that Batman and his loyal sidekick Robin had a secret homosexual relationship.

In the past, co-creators Robert Smigel and J. J. Sedelmaier made several attempts to adapt the sketch into a live-action film, but no studios would touch it. Not until a widely-popular live-action version of the sketch debuted on Saturday Night Live in 2011. Audiences went nuts when Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon appeared in costume as the crimefighters, Gary and Ace. Also didn't hurt to have Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell,  who voiced the cartoon versions of Gary and Ace, make cameos as the villains - that get distracted trying to figure out if the duo are gay, or not.

The renewed interest from that sketch led Warner Bros. to purchase the rights to the property late last year. They even gave fans a happy ending when they hired Robert Smigel to pen the screenplay, which is finished and has received praise by studio executives for its "messy but warm" climax. It will be produced by Mark Wahlberg and Chuck "Haim" Levine.
