CBM, We Need To Have A Talk

What about this site grows up?

Editorial Opinion

CBM has grown from a site that a fan of comic book movies created to post news where he could find them to one of the biggest sources for scoops on these types of film, and one with a huge community. Movie sites like joblo and cinemablend use your news, comicbookresources does as well and even bleedingcool doesn't escape it. But CBM needs to grow up to be all that it can.

And by grow up I mean not having News on the main page that aren't, articles filled with errors and without a minimum search of information to support them ('The Redacted'... My God.) and not being permissive with lack of education.

For every good article I read in this site, a couple of scrolls down lead me to name-calling, most of the time for no reason. Things like faggot and cocksucker can be found in almost every comment section. Now, I realize that most of the users are teenagers (I can only hope) which partially justifies the way they act, but if this site is to be taken seriously then the kids need to be grounded. Instead of a meaningless Hall of Shame, which none of those there present really care about, apply temporary and permanent bans to teach a lesson to those that need one. I'm not saying every one that uses profanity or hates on a movie aggressively like grif should be banned immediately but those that offend others without minimum care are a whole different story. And while we're on the name-calling issue, is the irony lost on users getting named "Mean Bullies" for doing it but the Hall of Shame itself has the category called "Annoying Wankers", doing exactly what it is condemning. Take the high road, people.

Also, the articles posted by members of the site should always be edited and carefully looked at by the site administrators so this site doesn't look so amateurish, every one can help but the professionalism is maintained.

What's your opinion on this and do you people have other ideas to improve the site?

CBM Insert: Thanks for your interest in improving CBM. We appreciate your readership and the time you took to post your opinions. Obviously we are an acquired taste for some who are used to the common cookie cutter news sites out there, but let me just point out that the REASON we are as big as we are (and quoted by so many other industry leaders) is the fact that we ARE different. No other entertainment news site is completely user-generated by the fans. No other site this big is as FREE and unmoderated either. Which is why we even allow critical articles like THIS on the site at all. Do you think Superherohype would allow an article about how much they suck? No. We don't WANT to be like every other entertainment news site. We don't claim to be anything but what we are, a site run by the fans. Lots of sites make that claim, but who is really backing that up? We are. And yeah, that means that not every article is going to be Shakespeare, but we get the news and scoops faster than anybody else, and we have more creative stuff going on here than anyplace else. That is why we are popular, and our community is as large as it is. Think about that for a moment. And then realize that CBM is the most awesome site on the Internet. - Galactus

"aweseome". Sigh.

I'm sure this will turn into a huge defense mode of why CBM is great as it is as if I was attacking it. I want the best for this site and that is why I thought we needed to approach those issues. None of the ideas I brought to the table make this site any less awesome, it's still created by everyone but the editors help it look good. And people don't have to be called names for having a different opinion without nothing practical happening to those doing it.

Great article. I agree wholeheartedly, people here need to grow up and realize a different opinion doesn't mean you can call someone something like that.

how about we get rid of the underworld ads too! Every time I click on a story I have to listen to "Its a new world... blah blah blah." Sometimes there is even more than one video ad playing at the same time. Very annoying!

I'm with Galactus. The troll badges (abuse system) work just fine.

Seriously, when someone comes up trolling and cursing too badly and I see how many badges he has I really chill down, like "not gonna waste my time on this guy, that's what he wants" (like illwill or that arrow guy).

And if they keep too heavy they're really banned.

And Galactus, your phrase "there are just as many easily offended people as there are trolls in the world" is so true, sometimes all we do is express opinions on something and treated as a hater (and once I was even called a troll, sniff). The thing is, the line between both is thin and several people (and moderators) need to check folks actions over some time before banning.

I know it sounds stupid but I think the name of the website is a huge reason for why people whine so much about what goes on the main page. Like Arminies, that's why he's whining!

The site is fine the way it is. I even enjoy reading the Marvel vs DC flame wars. They are amusing. Regarding name calling, I think the easiest thing in the world to do is to just ignore it.

Love the site how it is. Yes sometimes arguments get heated but if you actually take the time to read most posts the general comic fan walks away much more informed. I have been reading on here for years and a couple months ago created a login. I follow most of the editors on twitter and I have to say because of THIS site I have been able to re-connect with the comics of my childhood. I am officially that 32 year old nerd that tells all my friends about the rumors I read on

while i agree that this site is awesome, the best site on the internet in theChive. chive on. this site is a very close second. and isnt the reason we loves these movies and comics because we fell in love with them as kids? why would we want to grow up?

Users who are always on The Hall Of Shame should not be banned at first, even if their offences are bad enough to be banned. They should lose the right to comment on articles for a week or two(depending on the seriousness of their offences.) A second strike for repeated bad behaviour should result in losing the right to enter the chat, contribute articles and comment on articles for a month. If the previous two offences don't want the offender to leave then for a third strike the user should have their account banned. That's just how I would approach banishment for the Hall of Shame.

i think the site improves as it ages. especially with the new design!! so happy to see the yellow go bye-bye.

and no more edit buttons but at least we can delete our comment.

and the troll badges work well, imo.

galactus and all the jr-sr editors: your home for us is greatly entertaining, and very much appreciated!!!!

I challenge any one member of this site to find Editors/Owners of a website that try as hard as the CBM Admin to keep things civil.

Nuff said...

redmatter They are talking about this site: here">Comic Book Resources :)

I agree with Galactus, and no I'm not just a guy trying to make it good with editors. I like how this site is, sure there are some problems here, but since I've been here it's gotten a TON better. The biggest thing is the things complained about in the article aren't the owners/editors fault. It's the contributors/commenters fault. Just like is it the police officers fault that someone murdered someone? No. It's the murder's fault. The same goes for CBM. I do agree in someways Arminies but not when you blame CBM for the misconduct of SOME of it's users.

It would be nigh impossible to babysit every user...all 6 million monthly users and make sure they behave. The suggestion is just insane. You can ask them to behave all you want, but it isn't going to happen. It's like trying to get the users of Facebook to stop being idiots.

The "Hall of Shame" works exactly as it was planned to. I'll admit I had my reservations, but after seeing it in action, I'm quite impressed by it and the newer, updated version is even better and more mature.

I dare you to find a site that allows you to contribute news, editorials, fan-fic, etc like this. You'd be hard pressed to find it.
