EDITORIAL: A Moment of Silence, ComicsAlliance Is No More

After being nominated for three Eisner awards, fellow comic book site ComicsAlliance.com has been shut down by AOL for good.

On April 29th, ComicsAlliance made its last post, a routine article detailing a new trailer for RED 2, pointing out new Iron Man 3 toys, and showing a drawing of DC's New 52 version of cyborg Superman. Nothing new was posted the next day, or the next. After three Eisner nominations in three years, AOL had pulled the plug on the site without warning.

I know that I for one will miss the site. To a large degree, it was ComicsAlliance and ComicBookMovie that got me into comics. I didn't really grow up reading comic books, although I thought the X-Men game at the local arcade was pretty awesome (and the X-Men game on my NES was pretty terrible). As a child, I think I had two comic books: a reprint of the first X-Men comic and a Spider-Man comic I got from the dentist where Spider-Man fights Doc Ock (and tooth decay).

I began reading ComicsAlliance a couple years ago after stumbling across the blog of Chris Sims, one of the senior writers for the site. I liked what I read there. It was entertaining. It was interesting. And it helped to explain a lot of the things that can be confusing when you first start reading comics. ComicsAlliance was fun to read because each of its writers was passionate about comic books.

Up until ComicsAlliance was taken down, there were three sites that I would visit on a daily basis that all, coincidentally started with "C:" ComicsAlliance.com, ComicBookMovie.com, and Cracked.com. Now I'm down a site.

Although ComicsAlliance will not be updated, the site is still up, at least temporarily. From Monday to the time of writing, there have been 177 comments posted on ComicsAlliance's last article. Many of them are devoted to remembering the good times. Equally many are devoted to cursing AOL. But the one undercurrent that holds true is that people will miss ComicsAlliance.

To everyone who contributed to ComicsAlliance, thanks for everything. Good luck from here, and may you continue to find a way to do the things you love.

Comics Alliance always had great features aside from just the news stuff. Gonna miss it.

It was a good site to get commentary from and humor. Hopefully those writers will get work somewhere else.
